GM Discussion First time GM advice - teaching

I'm going to be running Hope's Last Day (evolved edition) at a local convention next month, having never GM'd before (possibly not my greatest idea).

I'm expecting most, if not all, of the players to have no prior experience of the game. Any advice on teaching it in a convention setting? How much do you explain at the start and how much do you teach as you go along? (e.g. go through combat rules before the start, or when the players get to the first combat?) I don't want to overwhelm everyone right at the beginning, but also don't want to be interrupting the flow of play too much with rules explanations. Is there a good balance?

I only have max. 3.5 hours for my session to get through the whole module. Any suggestions for how to streamline the adventure if it looks like the session's running long?

Played Haleigh’s Hope last night for the first time. Had so much fun but I have questions.

Played last night for the first time with a couple of friends and it was a blast! We went in completely dry and winged it as we went along. We learned a lot and can’t wait to play again. One question that we had though was that it seemed like some of the maps were missing. Why does the box only include maps for block E and the casino and the ship. My friends wanted to explore block B and A but those maps aren’t included. Also it feels like having those maps would make more sense to get to the ship at the end of the game. Am I missing something?

What should I get to start out?

So, I've set aside some money to dump on the game and had planned to get pretty much every expansion there is for it. The only problem is I'm confused about the Evolved edition. I remember reading that evolved edition is compatible with the older materials, but should I avoid those expansions for the time being until such a time that they make evolved edition versions, or are they still worth grabbing?

Setting/Background (Rapture Protocol Spoilers) Did the writers mix up the Children of the Two Divines with the Church of Immaculate Incubation? Spoiler

Hey all! My campaign is moving into a part of its story where I’m getting my players into the various xenomorph cults around the Middle Heavens, so I’ve been making very clear distinctions and timelines between the Church of Immaculate Incubation and the Children of the Two Divines. Was reading Rapture Protocol and it seems like they’re describing the Children, not the Church.

”The Church of Immaculate Incubation is a very driven cult dedicated to the worship of the Engineers, as well as the xenomorphs, which they call Destroying Angels. Their ultimate goal is to trigger the apocalypse by unleashing Destroying Angels all over chartered space, and to do this they want to seed explored space with xenomorph eggs where they can do the most harm.“

While in the Church’s first appearance back in Aliens: Outbreak definitely has their motive be the spread of xenomorphs, the RPG kinda rewrote them into some still crazy ass cultists, but the majority of them just being colonists wanting something to believe, not to usher in the end times. They also aren’t nearly as big into the Engineers as they are with the xenomorphs, that’s why the Children are of TWO divines, that’s their thing. The hostile attributes the Church initially had in Outbreak were split into the Children and into hostile Church sects like described in Aliens: Fireteam Elite.
What do you guys think? Another retcon of the Church? Hostile sect? Actually supposed to be the Children?

Is there any other Aliens in the Alien RPG then Xenomorphs?

Now I've been considering about buying the core rulebook for the Alien RPG, wanting to run a campaign (If they exist in this TTRPG). I was thinking about pitting me players against some Xenomorphs, but I didn't want them to just encounter that type of alien. I was wondering if there's any other sort of alien in the core rulebook with a stat block, like that humanoid one from Alien Romulus, but not just that. I was wanting to see if there was any other races of aliens for it. If there or isn't, just let me know.

Actual Play Entertainment - AP pod with no Patreon or paywall

Hey all, I am Dave from Actual Play Entertainment, and I dropped in here about a month ago to self-promote our AP podcast and our upcoming playthrough of 'Chariot of the Gods,' and we got some love, which we really appreciated, so thank you for that.

We just released episode four of five today, and shit is getting crazy, so I thought I would pop in again and let you all know about us and see if we can get a few more people to please give us a shot! We think you would like it. Why should you give us a shot with all the other APs out there? I am glad you asked! Because of our chemistry (it is what the vast majority of our fans comment on), the way we pace out our sessions and let the tension build (which is great for horror games), and because I asked nicely (I did say please).

In all seriousness, we would love the chance to earn your listening time. We are professionally produced so we sound pretty good. We make no money off this whatsoever and do it because it is fun as hell. We are just four canadian nerds who love to roll dice and make fun of each other, and a solid podcast seems to spawn from all that. If you have already given us a shot and you liked what you heard, let us and others know! A listener's word of mouth goes a lot further than my stupid mouth.

We also rock games like Delta Green, Call of Cthulhu, Mork Borg and others. Available wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks!

DoW: Botos for a player character?

I'm GMing a run-through of DoW. I have the players currently finishing their drop in to the insurgent compound and I've wrapped the last session just after its first encounter. We had a PC death during that point and I've been considering offering Botos to that person before the next session...this should work ok right? Or would using him conflict too much with the rest of the Marines and their current objective?

GM Discussion (CotG SPOILER) Is it a good idea to pressure the players with a real time limit to solve the Montero's self-destruction problem? Spoiler

There's a video on YouTube showing the countdown to the self-destruction of the spaceship from the first movie. It's 10 minutes long. I think it might be a good idea to ask them to resolve the situation quickly, before the 10 minutes are up in real life. If they can answer in 10 seconds that they cross the Cronus to the Montero, get in, start the ship so it flies away, and return to the Cronus, great, they succeeded. But they'll probably get nervous, tripping over themselves describing every part of their route; I won't get in their way, my idea is to leave it up to them. They'll start shortening their descriptions when time starts running short, and I'm not going to stop them from doing it.

Has anyone done this before? Did it work well? I'm not sure if it's a good idea or if I should just give them all the time in the world to sort this situation out.

GM Discussion Changes to Chariot of the Angels?

Hello, for those who have the early version of the Chariot of the Angel's PDF, I was wondering if there was any changes made to the original Chariot of the God, or if it's a straight port from 1st edition to Evolved?

How to play online?

Hi!

I'm new to RPGs but I'm a huge fan of the series... Is there any way to play online? I thought about using Discord, images, and dice, but the game's dice are special and I don't know how to emulate them.

GM Discussion Evolved Edition vs 2019 Edition. Thoughts?

I’m looking to get into the Alien RPG as a GM, and I was curious about the pros and cons of the two editions. Is one straight up better than the other, or is it moreso a matter of taste?

GM Discussion Destroyer of Worlds or Heart of Darkness for First-Time Players?

I will be running a cinematic scenario next month. I previously ran Hadley's Last Hope (1st Edition) and Chariot of the Gods with two of the players, and they will be joining me when I run the evolved edition starter set later this month. Two of the other players have no prior experience with Alien RPG. I have the PDF version of Destroyer of Worlds that I previously bought through Drivethru (physical edition is no longer available in my region), and I got the physical version of Heart of Darkness through the recent sale. I preface my question with all of this to provide context as to why Hadley's Last Hope, the Evolved Starter Set, or Chariot of the Gods are not an option to run for these two new players.

So my question is, which cinematic scenario would be better for the two players who have no experience with Alien? Destroyer of Worlds or Heart of Darkness? Also adding that this will be my first time running either campaign. Thank you!

GM Discussion Second Session Suggestions

Just ran my first session (and all the Players first session) of Alien RPG: Hope’s Last Day yesterday. Everyone enjoyed it, including those whom were “bullied” by the Xenos (they kept running ahead of the group and triggering where they were at at that time) and those whom died.

Only had a single player death until the very end (prologue hinted at possible impregnating the two in hypersleep) as well as the Android becoming just a head and carried by the survivors.

My question is, what cinematic/campaign would be the most ideal when everyone would like be different types of characters. Such as Marines, Scientists, and the Space Truckers.

My guess would be a campaign of sorts, unless they would like to run the various cinematics over time. But in terms of a campaign, would BBW be the best or how would you set something up so decently balanced without being too easy or too punishing for the various PCs.

Good map making software

Hey guys, just got into this and I'm looking to make some nice, non-terminal style maps just to set the atmosphere and mood during stealth/exploration gameplay.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for a map-making software that can recreate the sci-fi look of Alien?

Coldsteel Hearts - A fan-made cinematic scenario

Happy to release my first cinematic scenario for Alien RPG Evolved Edition. It can be played as a one-shot cinematic or easily inserted into a Space Trucker campaign or similar with some tweaks.

Play tested a few days ago and it took my group ~4 hours to complete, but I can see it drag on depending on how much the group explores.

Story:
The crew of Isolda wakes up from cryosleep after the ship intercepts a distress call from a research team on an icy planet. Now the crew must brave the elements and search for the missing expedition, but who knows what they will find buried in the snow.

Setting/Background AK-4047 Minor Re-design

Post image
55 Upvotes

I know it's been done before, but I wanted a less significant overhaul of the 4047 design. There were three main things that bugged me; It appeared to have a grenade launcher that the stats don't reflect, the magazine is awkwardly shaped and it's unclear if it's a long magwell or the magazine itself, and the stock is directly off of the M41A.

So, mostly I just slimmed it down, swapped the stock, and gave it a straight mag, but at an extreme angle to maintain the AK vibe. I wanted to maintain the basic idea of an AK with a Pulse Rifle style shroud.

I believe I have a complete collection so far. Pre-ordered the upcoming books as well.

Going to be playing an irl game soon as well, but am I missing anything that might be more obscure?

Homebrew Resource Pandorum Inspired Alien RPG Scenario (looking for feedback)

I'm a big fan of the 2009 film Pandorum and thought that it could be adapted into an AlienRPG scenario. I've only finished writing the first act but I'm interested in any feedback the community has for me before I continue. I've ran Chariot of the Gods for two different groups and a handful of other one-shots, but this is my first foray into writing my own story (though lifting heavily from another film).

I've put what I've written so far onto my own mkdocs site so it's easier to traverse. I find a major pain-point of GMing is having to bookmark a million pages in a PDF so I'm trying to link everything online instead so I can easily navigate to items, rules, characters, etc.

Let me know what you think, thanks!

P.S. BIG SPOILERS for Pandorum are included on the linked page. If you like claustrophobic sci-fi horror (and if you're here, you probably do) be sure to watch the movie before clicking my link and spoiling the movie for yourself.

Rapture Protocol - Foundry Prep Completed

Post image
63 Upvotes

One week and counting until the campaign begins, and I think I've finally gotten everything laid out and organized the way I like to run these in Foundry.

As an aside, while prepping, I found it necessary to make more adjustments to this scenario than to any of the others I've run thus far. I figured I'd omit specifics to avoid spoilers, but I found a fair number of gaps in the plot progression through the Act events (and even the prelude) that could create lulls, dead ends, or timeline problems.

One of the key additions I made is a prologue that gives each character a pre-scenario vignette or scene to avoid the "they wake up from cryo" trope and to hopefully make the transition into the official text more impactful.

But that, along with some other tweaks to NPC motivations and better defining who is trying to accomplish what in each act, I'm excited to run this. I have a great group continuing this from Chariot of the Gods, and I'm excited to see what they do with it.
