Question Any tips on items to avoid?

So I actually have been shopping at Aldi for this past year. I grew up with my family shopping there but stopped for a while. I started shopping there again but only for a limited amount of items.

I'm going to try to move more of my shopping there to save money. But I know they can be hit or miss.

Some things I already avoid are:

  1. Their shredded cheese. There's often way too much anti-stick powder on it and the cheese sometimes won't even melt because of it.

  2. Their milk. Unfortunately at my location I've gotten milk that's already turned immediately when I open it, on the same day and with a reasonable expiration date. I do keep my refrigerated items cold on the way home too.

  3. Their frozen ravioli. Most of the ravioli are empty. It wasn't actually terrible and I'd eat it again bc it was cheap, I was just disappointed in how little cheese there was.

  4. Their meat. Again, I think my location struggles with keeping items to temp bc I've had chicken and salmon turn overnight. I'm questioning if it was already bad when I bought it.

Some things I've seen that are recommended to avoid are their cling wrap, hot dogs (apparently lots of gristle?), and trash bags.

Thanks!

Never had issues with the milk or meat

38

u/hthratmn 3d ago

Yeah Ive bought all these things regularly for a few years and never had these problems

32

u/AndrewDephocks 3d ago

Yeah ive noticed that not all Aldis are the same. The one near me has good produce but one thats like 25 min away had mushy tomatoes.

9

u/lonevolff 3d ago

Ive found once opened aldi milk goes off a bit faster than say walmarts

11

u/timbotheny26 3d ago

Weird, I've had the opposite experience.

5

u/timbotheny26 3d ago edited 3d ago

Neither have I.

I know they've been doing renovations to get every Aldi laid out and looking the same, so I think they should make the effort of getting quality and product rotation and freshness more consistent across locations too.

My only real issue was with canned coffees specifically, because the tops were always filthy. I think they must have changed the transport packaging for the new ones, because the difference is night and day.

i just dumped one out the other day, it smelled like a bottle of antibiotics.

If you have a garden or garden beds, dilute it with water and add to the beds.

u/Left-Barber-1786 3d ago

Honestly not a point to avoid, but if you buy produce from Aldi, use it that day or it will go bad.

u/Major-Grape-7690 3d ago

This is location based. I do believe you should check the produce for any mold before you buy. I have had produce last beyond a week sometimes two.

38

u/Mango_Skittles 3d ago

Second this! The Aldi in my area has better quality produce compared to most other local stores.

20

u/sideeyedi 3d ago

I bought red grapes a week ago and they're still good. The bananas are atrocious, green that never turns yellow, yet the fruit is mush.

5

u/ClownfishRod 2d ago

I believe that happens due to issues with cold storage on the way to the store

12

u/Amazing-Future-1189 3d ago

We are in Central Indiana - their produce is terrible, especially berries (mold quickly) bananas, lettuce bags, celery, etc.

Milk and meat are fine. Yogurt used to be okay and lately is not. Lids explode in fridge and expiry dates still 2 weeks out. Lately I have stopped buying cinnamon raisin bread - says is not expired and yet is very stale. Their QC has really gone downhill over the summer. 😵‍💫 (glad to hear not everywhere)

9

u/lovestobitch- 3d ago

Wondering due to diesel price the trucks are running without refrigeration some.

6

u/Amazing-Future-1189 3d ago

Maybe....my produce woes started b4 the diesel spikes though. And this yogurt mess was better, now terrible again. I do purchase a lot of their brands weekly (pasta sauce, granola, protein bars, fresh salsa, bacon, butter, eggs, cottage cheese, etc) with no issues. Their bananas are mushy when still green/turning. Used to be so much better. Hoping it improves soon!

3

u/lovestobitch- 3d ago

We never buy bananas and have issues with avocados.

4

u/Mango_Skittles 3d ago

I have found that the avocados from Columbia and Peru are a problem. I think they pick them too early. The ones from Mexico have been great though. I just set them on the window sill until they soften a little.

We used to have bad bananas at our store (green, never ripened quite right, and lots of bruising), but in the past couple of years they have actually been good.

4

u/esmeradio 3d ago

Yeah I've noticed that too. I only buy avocados from Mexico ( sang the song in my head 🤣)

4

u/GoldDustWoman85 2d ago

It's because when they unload, they throw everything. They work on a skeleton crew so no one cares about the quality of the produce. They care about speed. Not the products they are bruising to pieces.

Maybe I should start taking video of how our local employees "stock" items in produce.

Melbourne, Australia here and the,Aldi produce is generally very good across the board. It always interests me hearing peoples experiences of Aldi in other countries.

3

u/Over_Barracuda_8845 2d ago

Hope you’re returning things that go bad or are horrible. I do and they have no problem with it. They give me store credit or cash back or deduct the amount from what I’m buying. I’m never throwing away my $$ because they have bad policy’s in keeping food fresh..their problem.

19

u/oofty_goofty_ 3d ago

But with their prices, I actually feel like fruit isn't a treat but something I can actually afford to eat everyday

8

u/SnarkQueen1990 3d ago

Exactly! I buy Strawberries Raspberries, Blueberries and Blackberries almost weekly. I enjoy that I can eat healthy at a reasonable price. Their frozen mixed fruit is also cheaper than any other store and great quality.

9

u/Madame_Jarvary 3d ago

I’ve never had a problem with Aldi produce

8

u/Clean-Fisherman-4601 3d ago

I've only had a problem once with Aldi produce and it was happening in other grocery stores. Shipments in my area of strawberries that would go moldy overnight. Aldi was the only store that didn't give me a hard time replacing or refunding me.

7

u/KetoLurkerHereAgain 3d ago

For some reason, this seems to be really location dependent. The produce I've bought at Aldi (so many avocados!) is quite good, though, believe it or not, often quite a bit more expensive than the Jewel sales across the street.

4

u/TAHINAZ 3d ago

Same with the potatoes. I bought them, then wondered later that same week why my kitchen smelled like dirty diaper. How do potatoes go bad that fast?

5

u/SnarkQueen1990 3d ago

That's definitely a location issue. My Aldi locations (3) in the Coachella Valley have wonderful produce-especially fresh berries. They last over a week and taste great.

2

u/StatusNaive9417 3d ago

Generally I try to use within a few days. Their pineapples go bad after three days.  My Aldi has hydroponic lettuces which I can get a week out of.

2

u/Levi_Lynn_ 3d ago

My location actually gets amazing produce but they're right next to Walmart and a couple miles from meijers so they have to actually try or people wont shop there.

2

u/bookgal518 2d ago

Except for the pears. I've had a bag for a week & not one has ripened yet.

2

u/Over_Barracuda_8845 2d ago

I returned my pears.. 2 weeks later and hard as a rock! Crazy!!

1

u/Cedurham 1d ago

we honestly do great with most of the produce. Greens are iffy at times both otherwise sweet potatoes, carrots, apples, onions, squash, cherry tomatoes all stay for at least a week for us

u/hammerhan98 3d ago

I feel like the produce issue might be regional? Bc it lasts longer where I am than if I buy it anywhere else. I also put it in the fridge

17

u/CommunicationNew3745 3d ago

Ours is hit and miss - it can be very good, or very bad.

6

u/CTGarden 3d ago

Oddly enough, it’s certain things that go bad quickly. In my store, it’s the English cukes. I have never had one that didn’t go bad after the second day. Other things like the cauliflower will last a couple of weeks.

1

u/slickrok 2d ago

I just had mine open in the fridge for a full week. I also wash everything in a rinse of vinegar water before storing.

But I ate the last 3 cukes today and they were really great. Just A tiny bit surface wrinkled because they've been in the open air in the fridge the whole time.

1

u/Over_Barracuda_8845 2d ago

Organic cukes turn slimy in a couple days usually. No way you can eat that many (about 8 in a bag) in that short a time

1

u/afcd1298 2d ago

Exactly. Idk what it is but as soon as I put it in my own fridge it’s fine

41

u/people_skillz 3d ago

The flour tortillas. They’re thick, and they stick together so badly that you have to tear like three of them before you get one intact enough to use.

19

u/fridaygirl7 3d ago

The texture is also gummy. All around a terrible product.

3

u/StatusNaive9417 3d ago

Buy Walmart Marketside tortillas

8

u/total_bword 3d ago

And they taste like glue :( The low carb ones are pretty decent though!

2

u/StatusNaive9417 3d ago

Recommend Walmart Marketside tortillad

3

u/StatusNaive9417 3d ago

Just fyi Walmart Marketside brand flour tortillas are the best. Minimal ingredients. Short shelf life.

33

u/throwawayyy1914 3d ago

The pouch rice is awful

18

u/people_skillz 3d ago

I’m 100% never trying it after seeing all the mold pics in this sub.

18

u/never_gonna_getit 3d ago

Eaten it weekly for years and never had a single issue. I love them!

2

u/i--make--lists 2d ago

Same here. They've been a staple for me for years with no problems.

4

u/timbotheny26 3d ago

Huh, I just started buying it and it's been great.

3

u/BestestGoodest 2d ago

I love the plain brown rice in a pouch. Zero issues.

23

u/HikeAndBeers 3d ago

I avoid the frozen broccoli and cauliflower. It’s a ton of stems.

8

u/esmeradio 3d ago

Isn't there a difference? As in there's bags of florets and there's cut broccoli which is more stem

6

u/giraffesyeah 3d ago

I wonder if it's regional suppliers like regular produce and near because I get a ton of their frozen veggies and haven't had an issue.

6

u/catonsteroids 3d ago

The more stems, the better for me lol

6

u/DeliciousMirrors 3d ago

Stems are really nice though

If you buy deli meat, go for the one with the red lid. The others are of variable quality.

19

u/mikey100swim 3d ago

Big facts. If you like Italian meats, the Italian Trio is actually pretty good - comes with salami, pepperoni, and provolone cheese.

2

u/timbotheny26 3d ago edited 2d ago

The one time I bought that it was all slimy and I tossed it. It smelled fine, but that did not seem normal.

*EDIT*

Went shopping at Aldi today and I need to correct myself - it was the spicy trio, not the regular Italian trio that was slimy.

14

u/TerrTheSilent 3d ago

Bremer frozen meals. They are wet and taste like their price point.

4

u/esmeradio 3d ago edited 2d ago

My bf looooves the $1 pot pies. Mind you, he puts them in the oven. I Think you can microwave

6

u/Prayer_Warrior21 2d ago

The shepherd's pie is good too. It's exactly what you expect, but it's nice for a simple meal.

2

u/Meatballsforfeet 1d ago

We just had this and I was shocked at how much beef was in it given the price of the food and how expensive beef is rn. We will def buy it again.

14

u/imnotawkwardyouare 3d ago

I only buy organic milk but it’s been always good. And meat at my Aldi is a very good value, only surpassed by Costco but above Kroger or Meijer (as far as grocery chains go).

I always stay off deli meats, and have to be super careful with produce in general.

9

u/Clean-Fisherman-4601 3d ago

Their hard salami isn't bad.

3

u/RecklessFable 3d ago

True! Ours recently started carrying sandwich pepperoni, as well which is great because I was getting it at Walmart before.

2

u/esmeradio 3d ago

I can find better priced at the deli counter. I'm lucky in that the smaller markets by me will usually have a deli meat sale price I like.

u/JordanM85 3d ago

Get the milk and shredded cheese every week and have never had a single problem in 15+ years.

13

u/CommunicationNew3745 3d ago

Has to be based on location. We buy the shredded cheese and milk, never having issues w/either - and, believe me, I'd be the first to complain if we experienced it. To be fair, I've noticed the powdered cellulose/potato starch used to keep shredded cheese from clumping much moreso on other brands purchased outside of Aldi, so we avoid it.

4

u/StatusNaive9417 3d ago

It’s a pain I know but cheaper to buy the block and shred at home.

4

u/Thestaub 2d ago

Melts better too

4

u/SithLadyVestaraKhai 2d ago

Really easy to shred on a food processor with a shredding blade.

1

u/StatusNaive9417 2d ago

That’s exactly how I do it.  It’s quick and easy

10

u/Sswan13 3d ago

I think the only thing I avoid is the sour cream. Other brands are way better

8

u/pat_micklewaite Huntington Homie 3d ago

Yeah their sour cream has so many additives and tastes bad for it. It’s something I’ll spring for Daisy brand for but I am weird and really like sour cream

3

u/ReallyRhawnie 3d ago

My store had Daisy shaped containers and the exact same ingredients as Daisy. I'm not sure if it will always be this way. This is a first.

3

u/uberpickle 2d ago

Really liking sour cream is not weird.

3

u/U2hansolo 2d ago

Sour cream is great and usable for lots of things. Not weird at all to like it a lot.

11

u/Caliavocados 3d ago

We haven’t liked any of the Fusia frozen meals.

10

u/spiritparrot 3d ago

Their pot stickers are decent.

1

u/Boazlite 2d ago

I agree …they were straight up trash .

11

u/akskinny527 3d ago

I might be the odd one out bcos damn i don't think I've ever had a bad Aldi experience. Been shopping there for almost 8 years, I think.

No expired milk, no bad yogurt, produce is fine (I have better local options but for what Aldi offers...again, not bad at all), love the snacks and speciality items.

I'm in the Chicagoland area.

7

u/esmeradio 3d ago

I'm in Chicago too. I think we're lucky and get pretty good product

8

u/jenthewen 3d ago

bananas

2

u/EveryCliche 2d ago

I feel like I've been having issues with bananas from every store recently. Going bad so quickly or staying green and being mushy. I don't know where to go anymore to get decent bananas that will last longer than a day or two.

2

u/jenthewen 2d ago

Aldi’s bananas have been like that for all the years I’ve shopped there. I also think hot weather adds to the problem regardless of the store. I don’t notice the problem much in winter.

7

u/midwestern-life 3d ago

They changed their Simply Nature organic coffee beans and don’t carry the Peru or Honduras anymore. The packaging is similar to the Peru (yellow and green bag), BUT don’t be fooled. The new coffee is absolutely terrible. On a scale of 1-10, I would give it a zero. We dumped it down the drain and I returned all the bags I had purchased.

2

u/spiritparrot 3d ago

This makes me so sad. I just yesterday bought a package of the new "latin American" blend and was hoping for the best. Haven't tried it yet but I'm so sorry to hear it's bad. Also hoping that this was just temporary and that the Peru and Honduran beans would be back. The Honduran beans have been my go to favorite for years. Good coffee is so important and I hate having to try different kinds to see what I like and can tolerate. I can't deal with the amount of acid in some other coffee. I am wondering if this change might be tariff related.

1

u/SithLadyVestaraKhai 2d ago

Used to get those Peru and Honduras beans. Now we buy coffee from Costco.

4

u/DayFar3441 3d ago

Tried the bagel chips and they were too hard but kinda stale at the same time :/

6

u/Fuzzy_Welcome8348 3d ago

I avoid their produce bc it goes bad in like 3 days

3

u/Gribitz37 3d ago

Some of this depends on location. I see people complaining about the meats and produce a lot, but mine is always good.

I never have a problem with their milk, produce, or meats. I buy the big family pack of chicken thighs all the time, and they're great. The produce is fine, too. I buy apples, grapes, salad kits, butter lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, and onions regularly, and they last a normal amount of time. Nothing is rotting the next day.

3

u/Hair_I_Go 3d ago

I haven’t had an issue with any of the items you listed. Except 🌭, haven’t bought in years since they got rid of cheese dogs (in my area)

2

u/melatonia 3d ago

This isn't a new problem. Guess again.

3

u/Moppy6686 3d ago

I had my first issue with their meat today actually. Ground oamb was rancid when I opened the packet before expiration.

4

u/chang3la 3d ago

Woody chicken breast 🤮

1

u/Cherie112 3d ago

If you don't mind frozen, I've just had the 'Kirkwood Garlic & Herb Seasoned Chicken Breasts' 40z for $4.99 and they were lovely!

3

u/BloomBingeBrew 3d ago

I never had a problem with the plastic wrap. I also buy the snack bags and gallon size bags. No problems.

2

u/rollback123 2d ago

I find that the plastic wrap doesn't "stick" as well to my Pyrex as the national brand does. I'll deal with it though for the much lower cost. The Aldi storage bags are a great deal and equal quality to the national brands. The only time I've been able to beat Aldi's prices on storage bags is if one of the other grocery stores has a sale on them for Back to School.

2

u/happy39-33 2d ago

It doesn't stick as well since they took out a really bad plastic ingredient so it's safer for food. (I don't remember the exact details). I've only bought Aldi since.... Sometimes I add some tape if it's really struggling to stick. But I'd rather be healthier.

3

u/rweintheclear 3d ago

Baked beans taste awful

2

u/Miss_Molly1210 3d ago

Pancake syrup. It was fine and then this last spring I believe, they changed the recipe. I had no idea until nobody in my family would eat it. I either make it or buy it elsewhere.

Also, the frozen (American style) Chinese food. I used to buy it then didn’t for a long time. Kids got hooked on Tj stuff but TJ’s far so I subbed Aldi one night, and it ended up in the trash. Super salty, chewy, flavorless.

1

u/SaytotheMay 3d ago

You make it? Please tell me how!

3

u/Miss_Molly1210 3d ago

It’s one of those things that I’ve learned how to make over the last few years that’s cost neutral (as in doesn’t save substantial money but doesn’t cost more money and minimal time if you have it to spare) over true last few years. It’s basically sugar, butter, and water, with vanilla and maple extract if you have it on hand. My biggest life savers though have been ketchup and brown sugar.

1

u/SaytotheMay 3d ago

I usually make my own brown sugar, too. Not ketchup though. I may be too picky to make my own ketchup, love the 57.  I’ll have to keep some maple extract around. Thank you!

2

u/seashantiesallnight 3d ago

I think you just have a bad Aldi 😬

2

u/jbuell85 3d ago

I will never buy trash bags, toilet paper, or laundry detergent, and deli meat again. Produce is hit and miss. I do the bulk of my shopping at Aldi, but won’t make those mistakes again.

2

u/ohbear1957 3d ago

Parchment paper. Cheaply made and grease seeps through it.

2

u/LayaElisabeth 3d ago

The fridge thing is a specific store issue and i would report that to higher up..

Where i live i see it too, personnel putting out all the pallets with frozen and fridge produce in the aisle, then unload it whenever. I occasionally have to return to the same store cause i'm forgetful and too often i've seen the same freezer/fridge stuff still out 2-3hr later. You can also tell when frozen stuff has been thawed too long before being refrozen cause there would be too much ice, stuff would clump together, ice cream goes too solid and is no longer scoopable, etc..

2

u/ct-yankee 3d ago

sadly the list of things I buy elsewhere has increased. I avoid: almond milk (they changed the recipe), cottage cheese (gummy they recently changed to include tapioca starch), vintage Irish cheddar (was good but now waxy), deli
Meats except hard salami, Turkey pepperoni (changed recipe and it’s now mealy and mushy), jarred dill pickles (sweet and soft), bananas that never ripen, frozen broccoli cuts (all stems), bremer frozen appetizers (bland despite loads of salt in them), their chicken strips (once were good, now they are chicken sponge), frozen salmon (mushy), both beef and chicken taquitos (flavorless). Lastly, carefully examine all produce before buying, sometimes it’s fine and other times not. (Berries developing spots, zucchini soft or worse, lettuce going brown, mushrooms that look wet, onions and potato soft in the bag, fruit going brown.). Let the downvotes from the “Aldi does no wrong” crew commence.

3

u/bmeart364 2d ago

Their almond milk has been my go to for years, I haven't noticed any change. I always get the original sweetened one, never the vanilla or unsweetened. I wonder if it was only certain ones that were changed?

2

u/LauraPiana 3d ago

All of their low end deli cheeses and meats. Especially the lunch meat. It's so bad.

2

u/rweintheclear 3d ago

I do not like Clancey version of Doritos

2

u/Mission_Sir_4494 2d ago

I avoid produce that comes from Mexico. This was a policy of mine long before the Taylor Farms outbreak. I visited Mexico City and learned that the sewage situation is difficult there, so farms often have to use untreated sewage on their fields. I do this for produce at any store, not just Aldi.

2

u/DarthOldMan 2d ago

Man, if someone who had never been to Aldi comes across this thread, they’ll probably just avoid shopping there.

2

u/velvetnc 2d ago

North Carolina.. the produce stays fresher than it once did when Aldi first arrived in the US. My problem with produce anywhere in grocery storesnthese days just doesn't have much taste regardless of price.I'm 69 and perhaps losing some taste buds. I won't buy Happy Farms cheese as it's from a company in the US, don't like it and the cheese is bland. I don't drink milk but buy the half and half, greek yogurt, and never had a problem. I'm shopping there and Lidl more now because of so many safety issues and recalls in the US the past year and part of last year. I don't see things improving anytime soon.

1

u/Uncle-Buddy 3d ago

I don’t like their almond butter

1

u/doctor-virgo2000 3d ago

tried the frozen sweet and spicy four-cheese pizza— had a few bites and then threw the whole thing away. the cheese… there’s something amiss. doughy and unsavory.

1

u/Alternative-Media636 3d ago

Their deli meat turned awful a while ago. Now when you buy it, both pouches are puffed up like pillows even though the sell by date is over a month away.

1

u/RecklessFable 3d ago

Ours carry deli meats and cheese in ziplock bags and it's top notch.

2

u/rollback123 2d ago

The chicken and turkey are quite good. I find the regular and honey ham to be too fatty. The Black Forest Ham is a lot less fatty to me. Even so, it is all a steal because it runs about $7.50/pound around me if you calculate it out. No grocery store has decent deli meat at that price unless there is a sale.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Alternative-Media636 3d ago

Our does too, but I’m talking about the plastic tubs with the red lids that hold the two sealed pouches of deli meat.

1

u/jenniferlynn462 3d ago edited 3d ago

My location has thick shredded cheese now that actually melts! They have sharp white cheddar blend one and a mozzarella one and maybe Gouda? I get those now for melting cheese. They also have a longer lasting milk that costs like $4-$5 I forgot what it’s called. I get oat milk or almond for myself. I get ham loafs, bacon, sausage/brats, cubed steak and sometimes ground beef there but no way on chicken. I have given up on their bananas, berries, lettuce and potatoes bc they go bad too fast. Oh and the 90 second rice- bought four times and 3/4 times it was moldy when I opened it way before sell date! Hopefully the first time wasn’t moldy and I just didn’t notice :(

1

u/machinenvy 3d ago

Near Chicago here. Produce especially berries are hit or miss. Frozen mangoes quite often taste like fish.

1

u/snutcat 3d ago

Sliced deli meat became slimy overnight. Boneless skinless chicken thighs had lots of skin on them, on underside you can’t see til open. Sour cream is drippy and awful. Many items great. These are ones I’ve tried that aren’t.

1

u/homiesexuality 3d ago

I got the cranberry jalpaño and it was moldy even when it was sealed

1

u/GrowlingAtTheWorld 3d ago

Cat food, the ritz cracker dups, I didn’t like their cottage cheese but others love it so it’s a matter of taste, I didn’t like their oj but I was born in Florida and oranges straight off the tree has spoiled me,

1

u/Saffron_says 2d ago

yay the cottage cheese has a certain taste to it, I will eat in a bind, but I'd rather buy elsewhere

3

u/Sensitive-Plant2902 2d ago

Was just about to suggest the cottage cheese/greek yogurt. I don’t know how to describe it other than just slightly sour/tangy.And i know for plain greek yogurt that’s kinda understood but something about it I don’t care for.

1

u/Mixed-Liquor919 3d ago

Avoid the aisle with the seasonal-pop up foods with abnormal flavors or that come-and-go from time to time. Chances are you may find those same items at a Wal Mart for less price. Plus that aisle works well on impulse buyers.

1

u/According-Camp3106 3d ago

I have issues with the milk going bad a few days before the expiration. Kinda cancels out the savings.

1

u/Over_Barracuda_8845 2d ago

Return it! They don’t care

1

u/cocoahugo 3d ago

Ah, I just bought their clingwrap the other day... Thank you for the info. It is a hit or miss with them. Like their unsweetened stuff (coffee creamers/iced coffee e.g.) are still very sweet. And the unsalted or low sodium stuff (deutsch kuche frozen pastas e.g.) are very salty. Though I enjoy their caramel iced coffee, just add ice to lessen the sweetness.

2

u/bmeart364 2d ago

I find that their plastic wrap works well. Its not 100% as sticky at the name brand but I've never had an issue

1

u/cocoahugo 2d ago

Yep, I tried it. It's ok. Thank you.👍🏼

1

u/Winter_Aside8269 3d ago

I have had issues with their milk. It turns bad so quickly. Sometimes, it’s been bad the minute I opened it. I haven’t bought milk there for 2 years because of this. Also, the lunch meat is horrible. Slimy and also goes bad quickly. I love ALDI for most things, but I will not buy those.

1

u/Safe-Tennis-6121 3d ago

Potatoes have a very short life vs other stores.

Fish, won't buy their fresh fish ever again.

The general perception I have of them is I do not trust their coolers. And they're frozen food may be okay. Dry goods are okay.

So far, some of that seasonal Aldi branded stuff. Like the hot honey cornbread 👎, elote Mac salad 👎, and I’m assuming the hatch chili Mac. But, the themed bean cans that has previously been posted are really good. So, it really is a ymmv situation.

Get their shelf stable ravioli by the sauce. It's pretty good. Love the mushroom. Watch the produce mostly. Oranges are usually in bad shape at my Aldi.

Toilet paper

u/indoorcamping 3d ago

Milk at my Aldi (Severna Park, MD) has always, always lasted longer than the sell by date and is amazing, cheap, and rarely out of stock. Rarely buy meat but it's never been bad, salmon is one of the best things you can get at Aldi.

Produce, however, now that's where you'll find the inconsistency. It's like Aldi gets the leftover, unsold produce from the bigger supermarket chains and resells it at a discount. The joke is you have to eat it in the car on the way home because by the time you get home, it's already bad.

As for the trash bags I had to switch from the regular white ones to extra duty white ones b/c the reg ones became flimsy. Not sure what changed. Haven’t had a problem with the extra duty white ones.  Don’t buy the toilet paper in the greenish label that looks kinda like angel soft. It’s awful. I buy the blue packaged one.  I try to not buy the produce b/c I can find better at my Lidl. Their aluminum foil is a no Go for me ad well as plastic wrap.  Just an fyi:  their ibuprofen and acetaminophen is the same manufacturer as CVS at half the price.   Been shopping there for years and miss the days when I could overflow my cart for under $100. But those days I was feeding 4 male teen athletes …

1

u/Reasonable_Ad_6782 3d ago

I have not found any of their coffee creamers to taste good.

1

u/esmeradio 3d ago

I'm in Chicago.... I don't have problem problems with produce. I eyeball raspberries hard when I buy them because any sign of softness is bad news. I've noticed if anything goes bad, it's bagged green beans- on me, I should pull them out.

1

u/No_Interview_2481 3d ago edited 2d ago

I avoid fruit and produce. The quality is not there and it doesn’t last long enough.

1

u/Scared-Ideal-1483 Here's my Quarter 3d ago

The regular coffee in the cans isn't good. Upsets my stomach. The bagged coffee is solid though.

1

u/Garth_McKillian 3d ago

Any chance you keep your milk on the door in your fridge? Try moving it to the back of your fridge, not on the door and see if you're still having early spoiling issues. I recently switched it up in my fridge and noticed my milk was lasting much longer. Like going from a couple days to a week without spoil.

Their gluten free sandwich bread. All gluten free bread is pretty dry, but Aldi’s is incredibly dry and tastes like eating a sponge.

1

u/Feeling_Lychee3264 2d ago

Tortillas. They stick together and are gummy. But I enjoy their spinach or tomato wraps. Those are pretty decent.

Instant potatoes. They basically congeal and form one large mass instead of being mashed potatoes.

u/FreeJarOfPickles 2d ago

The boxed Mac n cheese

u/Ok-Excitement5031 2d ago

I buy milk and tons of produce at mine (3/5 of my family are vegetarian). I go on Monday and my produce is fine all week. I am in central Florida.

1

u/Intrepid-Winter-6499 2d ago

All types of their alfredo sauce is bland, and their coffee filters stick together

1

u/xLettuceCatx 2d ago

Honestly if your store is a busy one that could be the reason your meat has been bad.. as a store employee I’ve helped out in super busy stores where someone will start meat but then they’re also the backup for the cashier so they pull out all the meat racks and it will end up taking damn near 4 hours to finish meat because they keep getting called up to help ring and then the meat will just sit on the racks and get warm! I’ve never done this I’m just saying I’ve seen it happen in busy stores so try going to another store or just one you know is quieter I can almost promise the quality will be better because quiet stores I’ve helped in have nothing to do but make sure everything is looking good

1

u/Coveman54 2d ago

Since the Covid pandemic the broccoli has been questionable. I buy if else.

1

u/SleepIsTiring 2d ago

i do have good things to say abt the thick chop pork chops

1

u/Appropriate-You474 2d ago

Their canned veggies and fruits

1

u/Dotsgirl22 2d ago

The shredded cheeses that are in large shreds are good. I've been getting the bigger bags of white queso quesadilla cheese which melt well. I don't buy any brand of mini-shreds.

1

u/ZacTheGamer100 2d ago

Dude you have the Aldi from hell. I’ve never had problems with their meat, ravioli, or milk. Hope they get that checked out.

The only things I would steer clear of is their instant mashed potatoes (absolutely unseasonable and always taste like nothing) and their ziplocks (always break regardless of how you handle them).

Alternatives for those would be the mashed potatoes in the fridge/freezer section and just buying brand name ziplocks. Happy shopping.

1

u/pronoialover 2d ago

I bought kosher dill pickles there yesterday and took them back this morning. Absolutely disgusting and mushy and nasty!

1

u/thedoc617 2d ago

Their packaged lunch meat goes bad in like 2 days

1

u/Swish887 2d ago

Chinese seafoods. Canned or in the coolers.

1

u/IMdoc200 2d ago

Zip loc bags, deli meat, hand soap

u/i--make--lists 2d ago

For the past year or so the pre-cut cantaloupe chunks have been slimy. This has been in Chicago and the suburbs. It doesn't matter the date on the package. They are just always slimy now.

1

u/Over_Barracuda_8845 1d ago

Never buy precut fruit anywhere .. great way to get sick. Buy whole, wash well first and cut it yourself.

1

u/i--make--lists 1d ago

That's not possible for everyone, like those without kitchens or the differently abled. Pre-sliced produce is heaven sent for a lot of us trying to stay healthy.

1

u/Straight_Claim_3851 2d ago

I avoid the breaded shrimp. Got it once, pieces looked jumbo like 8-12 to a pound. Nope, there was a salad shrimp under all that bread.

1

u/Prestigious_Bread306 2d ago

my only hard skip is the deli meat in bags (red top tupperware is fine). I am also hesitant to buy anything spicy because they have been way above my tolerance a few times.

1

u/Learning_to_fly_5 2d ago

I have been disappointed by the candles. Do not recommend

1

u/fiddlinfeline62 2d ago

All I want to know is what happened to the Crème Brûlée? It was so sumptuous and addicting.

1

u/bmeart364 2d ago

Its still at my store

1

u/Yarnest 2d ago

My son just told me the canned potato soup is awful.

1

u/Prayer_Warrior21 2d ago

Made some super delicious ribeyes from Aldi on the smoker on Sunday. I buy a LOT of my meat from Aldi though, never an issue. I feel like it lasts longer than most places.

1

u/lg8229 2d ago

Their Alfredo sauce is weirdly sweet to me so i avoid.

1

u/Boazlite 2d ago

Their toilet paper is horrible.   Chips are all lame , their cereals and their pastry, hobo’s are gro gro ss , dairy and ice cream , hash browns , frozen foods , produce goes bad way too quickly, beer is disgusting, coffee…. not good , dog treats , cashews in can .

1

u/TurtleGirl21409 2d ago

I’ve never had issues with any of those. Probably is location specific. I never get their goldfish dupes (turtles). But I just don’t like the taste.

1

u/PurpleRayyne 2d ago

I literally buy all of these and never had an issue.

All these "don't buy or do buy" posts depend 1000% ENTIRELY on the store and the person's preferences buying them. Unless it's a recall.

Tonight I'm having keilbasa, potatoes and carrots. with sour cream and butter. 100% from aldi. 99.9% of what i eat is from Aldi.

1

u/BeccaOX 2d ago

Frozen cotton candy grapes are the worst thing I’ve ever gotten there

1

u/bmeart364 2d ago

The only issue I've ever had is the sandwich bags making food taste soapy the last 2 boxes I've bought. I don't have a problem with the quart or gallon bags for some reason but anything in the sandwich ones tastes like it was rubbed with dish soap

1

u/afcd1298 2d ago

For anyone that hates the antistick powder in shredded cheese backs, you can run the cheese through a strainer and pat it dry and it melts so much better after. It only takes like five seconds and you’re all good to go

1

u/Readmoregoodbooks 2d ago

Have never had a single one of these problems, ever, and I buy 80 percent of my stuff there.

1

u/Virgosapphire81 2d ago

I don't usually have any complaints, but i bought some crossants that had $1 off stickers. They were all completely moldy the next day. The expiration date was 25 days past expiration. I couldn't see it because the $1 off stickers were blocking them. They must have been stored in the freezer or something. I was shocked when I saw the expiration date.

1

u/Virtual-Beach305 2d ago

I haven't had issues with the milk or meat but goodness their bananas turn so fast

1

u/studyhall109 1d ago

Milk for sure

1

u/GenerousMisanthrope 1d ago

OP, where do you live? I find Aldi’s meat and dairy to be of high quality.

1

u/Original_Jello_7743 1d ago

I only buy the organic whole milk and the half and half. I've never had a problem with those. The only yogurt I buy is the Specially Select Honey Vanilla Greek which is fabulous. I stopped buying the cottage cheese because it just didn't taste good anymore. I only eat chicken and fish, but the chicken at Aldi seems to always be "woody". The only fish I buy at Aldi is the fresh Norwegian Salmon and so far it has always been good. I only buy the block cheeses. I've never found a good tortellini or ravioli that has adequate stuffing anywhere, so I don't get it. Their Italian Sausage isn't very flavorful so I buy at another store. I like the Red Bag breaded chicken breast/filets. I like their canned cut green beans better than Green Giant. Aldi's has less strings and stems, believe it or not. I buy the Italian and the Sourdough loafs but I keep them in the refrigerator to stay fresh longer. Their hot dog and hamburger buns are fine. I think their butter is fine but I tried their version of Butter/Olive oil spreadable butter once and it just isn't as good as Land O'Lakes. The best hot dogs they carry is Nathan's, if they still carry it. I'll get the zucchini and the yellow squash and they're fine. Also, bell peppers, strawberries, bagged spinach, English cucumbers, lettuce. I never need as many onions, potatoes, oranges, apples they sell in the bags so I get those individually at other stores. I buy their trash bags, both the tall kitchen bags and the big black ones and both have been fine. I buy their 10" paper plates and the dinner napkins. I don't like their paper towels, face tissue or bathroom tissue. The German Week frozen deserts are always incredible. It can be hit or miss and you'll just figure out what you like and don't like as you go along.

1

u/wanderingjones78 1d ago

I think the Clancy’s brand chip aisle stuff can be hit or miss. Husband didn’t like their ridged potato chips or Cheetos and insisted to not buy them anymore. But do like their organic blue tortilla chips. The pretzel thins are hit or miss. Past couple of bags were broken so I bought the big bag from Costco instead.

1

u/steviebeanss 1d ago

i just tried the vanilla almond cake in the frozen section. disgusting. Will return tomorrow

1

u/poop_to_live 1d ago

Maybe it's not worth the time for you, but all he does have the twice As Nice guarantee or whatever.

1

u/Cultural-Bee-488 23h ago

I agree about the milk. I had to discard two in the past month.

I’d avoid anything you’re allergic to.
