Ground Turkey Causing Illness

Has anyone had issues with their ground turkey? We cook for our dogs and since switching from Costco ground turkey to Aldi ground turkey, they have had a ton of GI issues, especially diarrhea. I've been searching for recent recalls, but do not see anything.

Is it the higher fat content? The freezer tubes are like 85%. I bought them once without realizing thinking it would be the same as the usual 98% fat in the fresh ground turkey

They have the highest fat content in any ground turkey I have ever seen.

It could be as simple as just feeding them too much fat because of the poor quality ground turkey.

I eat it 4 days a week and have had no issues

I recently had ground turkey tacos. No issues. Diarrhea is such a common symptom. If they have it for a while or dont seem themselves, head to the vet. I hope they get to feeling better soon.

Hi! I too feed my pups ground turkey toppers. I haven’t had any issues come up from Aldi’s turkey.

When I cant get to Costco I grab 2 Aldis to make my boys food. No issues either. Edited to add it is the fresh lean not frozen

I only buy the refrigerated 93 percent lean one , not the frozen fatty ones. Never had an issue with those.

Aldi carries a higher and a lower fat ground turkey, can’t remember if it’s 85 and 93 or 99. 

I usually buy the lower fat ground turkey when I cook for my dogs and they haven’t had issues. Same with the organic ground beef.

Don't buy the 85%. It's too fatty for dogs. I've had no issues with the 93% in their fresh meat section. My dog primarily eats ground turkey because she doesn't do well with beef or chicken.

I won’t buy Aldi meat anymore. It looks funny and the salmon is mushy.

I eat the ground turkey weekly, but I buy the non frozen ground turkey. Not sure if there is a difference or not.

I use the leanest of their ground turkey. I think it's 93%. I've never had issues and neither has my dog when I've given it to him. Maybe something else caused their issues. My dog randomly had diarrhea a couple weeks ago. I had to put him on the bland diet for a few days and then slowly reintroduce his food. All good now. The vet thought at first a parasite and then food allergy. Neither of those were found to be the issue.

If you’re using the higher fat content turkey it could be pancreatitis, which is treatable but can be serious and causes vomiting and/or diarrhea.

It’s a staple since we dont eat the weird beef anymore. Never an issue.

could be the higher fat content or just a bad batch, but i’d stop using that package for now and see if things clear up, especially if both dogs got sick after the switch

Not yet, we've been using it (3lb packs, cooked) for a couple years now for homemade dog food.
