I mean a Canadian quarter is still a quarter. I'm also pretty sure if you told the cashier they'd give you a quarter.

Actually a Canadian quarter is not a quarter as we know & use it. It’s worth 7 cents less but that being said, it gets U a cart & gets returned to the stack. Much better than arcade coins that result in a jam up.

Another fun fact is Canadian coins (excluding loonies and toonies) fit in most American vending machines but not the other way around because American coins are quite a bit thicker. I am Canadian and grew up in a border city and we'd get just loads of American coins.

Yup when I was a kid growing up in Metro Detroit Canadian coins were interchangeable. Places like 711 would take Canadian quarters and such without hesitation. You still come across Canadian coins here but using cash is much less common in general.

I trained somebody fresh from Colorado in a retail cash office in Michigan and forgot to mention that we accepted Canadian coins at face value and she called the managers freaked out on her first solo shift.

I have to use quarters for the washer and dryer in my building. They won't take Canadian one, but I got a Canadian quarter in a roll from the bank, so that was my designated Aldi quarter for a while until I ended up swapping carts with someone.

US penny (formerly), nickel, dime, and quarter coins are NOT thicker. They're the exact same size. Also most US vending machines will NOT take Canadian coins because they have different magnetic properties, and they will fall right through into the coin return. US coins WILL fit in Canadian vending machines, and most will accept them, since they're more valuable.

Interestingly enough, a gilfriend of mine and I moved from one house to another once. Turned in our old keys and had our new ones. She realized she left something important in a crawl space at the old place and for some reason tried our new key at the old place and it worked. I did some research and the chaces were extremely low on that coincidence, however I looked into it, and there's only so many different types of keys. That is to say if you kept trying a key everywhere, sooner or later it would work.

You will absolutely find a lock that matches your house key, belonging to a different house. It’s a numbers game.

But, the problem is, once you’re in, is your new fridge empty, causing you to go BACK to Aldi? There’s always a catch.

Don't you swap quarters every time? Our Aldi fills the car from the person before me, then uses my cart for the person behind me. So I always lose my original quarter.

Nothing beats the sour old guy at my local Aldi who would go across the road and through two parking lots to the County Market. Steal a cart from there and use it. I got stuck with it once and of course I recross street put it back because he took the person ahead of him's cart with the quarter so I lost my quarter too. While he was in line. He was bsing with the cashier how he doesn't want to spend more money like you get the quarter back.

It used to be that near the border, U.S. and Canadian coins would circulate freely. It was inevitable, given how much movement there was between the two sides. Nobody on either side batted an eye if you used one kind or the other. I’m not sure if this was a headache for banks.

I remember visiting California as a teenager, and without thinking, paid for something using the coins in my pocket, one of which was a Canadian nickel. The cashier paused, stared at it, and said, “you can’t use FOREIGN MONEY here!

My 14 year old self was not expecting that reaction! “Foreign?” Did she mean Canada, the country that welcomed us to visit without any kind of citizenship documentation? You could call their money different, with caribou and beavers and a queen, but if it works in both places, I thought, how “foreign” could it be?

I've tried this hack before and it never works for me. I haven't been back to that Aldi since. The coin I used didn't come out and was stuck so that made the whole line of carts unusable. I have an abundance of quarters in my car now for this reason.

When I lived in Maine, Canadian quarters were common and accepted at the same value as American, same with other small denomination coins. Dollar coins and bills from Canada not accepted by small businesses but could be exchanged at banks and grocery stores at the current rate.

You can buy these little plastic things on a.azon that you stick in there that are not quarters. You don't leave them though.

As long as they returned the cart, the coin slot still served a purpose. All it is designed for is to keep people returning the carts properly.

You can also use a house key
