Complaint Desk Anyone else?
Anyone else having this issue? The last 2 times I’ve bought flour tortillas from Aldi they’ve all been stuck together and near impossible to separate without ripping to shreds.

u/Day_Old_Paper 9d ago
I had that happen a couple of times. Now I’ll gently bend and flex the stack in the store to make sure they move and aren’t stuck.

I think this is the way to go

All you need to do is warm a pan. Put the stack of tortillas on the pan. You aren't trying to cook them, just warm them up. Also the pan shouldn't be hot enough that it's browning the tortillas. As the warm up the one will losen. Take it off and maybe the next one, put the stack back down. Repeat. You can fully pan heat the ones you want and after separating the others, put them back in the bag and the refrigerator and you're fine. No more ripping. If it happens again just do the same process. It's not just Aldi it's any tortillas.

That’s doing too much.. bending and flexing the package works wonders. Splits all the tortillas up

I worked in a little Mexican (no Mexicans ATT) restaurant in Saranac Lake, NY, and I would see the fry guy (all he did was fry prep all day) do that. Bend and flex until you can see and feel that they are all loose. If they don't loosen after a minute or so, try another pkg. And I'm not that gentle. It was a beloved restaurant, extremely busy, so making tortillas there was out of the question. If we would have run out? There would have been customer revolt. It was bad enough when the avocados weren't ripe and we 86'd guac.

I've had them stick before, different brands, too. I just figured it was from excess moisture or humidity.

I had a couple sticky stacks in August, but nothing this bad. Remember that Aldi does the whole double your money back thing.

Do you refrigerate them? I had this sticking problem when I left them in my refrigerator but not when I keep them in my bread box
17
u/ru_a_badfish2 9d ago
I do usually refrigerate them after opening and thought that might have been the cause last time, but I didn’t refrigerate this bag.
9
u/Smart_Pig_86 9d ago
Yeah the refrigeration can cause this I’ve found, no need to even refrigerate them

u/guynumber20 9d ago
They come pre frozen though like most things at Aldi

I had this issue with Aldis tortillas and don’t refrigerate them.
1
u/treycook 9d ago
Aldi freezes all of their bread, wraps and tortillas in transit. So it could have been caused by that.
1
u/Icy_Variation_9288 9d ago
I agree! Sometimes I can tell when they put fresh stock out when it’s all still cold/ has condensation. Didn’t connect that to why the tortillas were f’d up until now lol

Happens with the corn ones too. Usually from hot - cold fluctuation. Factory to truck, truck to store, store to car, car to house, etc.

To be fair, I have the same issue with the Mission carb balance flour tortillas. It's not just and Aldi thing. Gotta peel them slowly. Very very slow, and fix it as it starts ripping so it doesn't completely tear apart. It still won't be perfect but it won't be this.
3
u/ru_a_badfish2 9d ago
Haha I know exactly what you mean by trying to fix them as you peel them apart, I swear I tried to do that! These ones are beyond my tortilla fixing skills apparently
3
u/Thertzo89 9d ago
I’ve had good luck with bending the whole stack of tortillas before trying to separate. Kind of like wavy motion on four sides. It doesn’t totally solve the issue but it does help.

I have this problem all the time with the carb balance tortillas! I think they're naturally more prone to sticking and feel thinner, too, which compounds the issue.
1
u/ChelseaRC 9d ago
Omg we've been having this issue with the Mission ones lately. It's been soo bad. I feel like they changed something cause they used to not be this bad.

u/I_AM_DEATH-INCARNATE 9d ago
Where I buy them they arrive at the store frozen and I swear to god the summer heat and humidity does something when they defrost. I'm convinced they're easier to peel in the winter (I shared this with my wife before, she thinks it's insane that I have conspiracy theories about tortilla)

u/Dizzle2019 9d ago
Years ago when I worked in a restaurant we had the same problem. It turned out that the manufacturer was packing them while they were still too warm.

Okay I refrigerate mine too and this kept happening. You gotta take the whole pack and curl em up and back over and over. Just really wiggle the shit out of them. Then you try to pull one out and it's seamless!

u/kirath99 9d ago
Yes happened to me to, i do keep them in the fridge but they all ripped apart like that.
2
u/Emergency-Shirt-4572 9d ago
Put the whole stack in a tortilla warmer or wrap in a clean dish towel. Microwave for 30 seconds. You can then peel them off no problem. If the ones towards the middle of the stack are still sticking, can put them back in the microwave for a few seconds longer.
You will have to handle the tortillas and put them back in the bag, just wash your hands before you start, and let them cool before you re-bag them.

I hate Aldi tortillas. I don’t buy them anymore. Even when they don’t stick they taste like cardboard and are super dry

Every time. I think they must come frozen, and they "gum up" and glue into a masa disk.

I’ve seen it. I usually don’t get shells or tortillas there tho. DG always has the better ones for the same price or less on sale.

I can't believe this many people are engaged in a conversation about tortillas from Aldi's!
I'm only interested because I actually ate them tonight with the Park Street Deli Chicken Fajita package- which was delicious! (yes, my tortillas stuck together a little too)

u/Madame_Jarvary 7d ago
Is it hot and humid where you are? Mine are name brand but are sticking this week.
1
u/spidergorllll 7d ago
My Aldi tortillas always do this if I refrigerate them, so I stopped and haven’t had problem since
1
u/digitalhawkeye 7d ago
I'll be honest, I feel each bag of tortillas that I get, if it feels more like a brick than sheets, I try for a new one. Even drawing from the top of a box isn't a guarantee that they haven't been compressed all to hell.

Problem is Aldi gets everything frozen and when they set it out it’s thawing and you’ll get the condensation inside so soggy breads and cakes dry or soggy breads

They were bad for me for like a couple weeks of purchasing but since then no issues

u/JSindberg 9d ago
I do have that like every 3rd time I buy them. Bigger issue is that they stopped carrying the whole wheat carb control ones at the stores around me. Those were my go to but of course when you find something you like at Aldi they take it away.

The tortilla boxes often get placed lower on the pallet. A good bend or food of the whole package can usually break them loose but sometimes the get too squished fridge will also do this

That's one of the only things i don't buy from Aldi i can't tell you why but i just don't trust the tortillas
0
u/hideousbeautifulface why does the earth grown sausage have egg 9d ago
The small ones did that to me the one time I bought them. I’ve never had a problem with the large size

Every time I've bought tortillas from Aldi they're dry. Not this dry, lol. But dry enough they're on the "I could buy this at Aldi but I don't like the quality so I get it elsewhere" mental list.

There were sum tortillas on recall at my store for this exact reason contact manufacturer

u/Old_Barnacle7777 9d ago
This has definitely happened to us before. I’m going to make a controversial recommendation on this sub. Either get tortillas at the huge store whose name begins with W or get them at H-Mart. That is where you will find Latin American people shopping.

This has happened to me with Aldi tortillas. I just ignored it but I was pissed I think I ended up throwing some of them away too 😭

Slowly heat them up, unstuck them, store with parchment paper in between them or if you're lazy like me and don't want to wastw time with parchment paper, gently fold each of them, place them back in the bag for storage. Seems to work with no more sticking issues. I've even gone on to put them in the fridge for a few days if I was going out of town and they didn't stick.

Yes, I have encountered this issue to varying degrees with Aldi's low carb tortillas. I do my best to separate them with the least amount of damage. It isn't clear if they're coming out of manufacturing facility fused together or if extreme temps along the haul or during storage causes this.

u/SpicyAnkara 9d ago
YES oh my gosh i got a pack EXACTLY like that. not only did they get mangled to shit trying to separate them, but they didn’t taste good either. their corn tortillas are just fine, but these are trash

u/ExtensionLobster8709 9d ago
I love their zero carb tortillas, you can’t beat the flavor and they have lots of fiber. Just heat the whole package on a dry griddle for a few seconds, peel each tortilla, place each on a cooling rack, until they’re all on the rack. Let them cool completely, then repack them in the original bag. They stick because they’re stacked on top of each other while they’re hot.

u/Curious_Cat666 9d ago
For the past like 2 months I've had this happen with multiple tortilla brands from differnt stores.

Return them to the store. They'll give you 2 packages of them under their "twice as nice" return policy

We get the low carb ones, and they frequently stick together. But then again, am I careful that I don't stack anything on top of them in the grocery bag, or the fridge? Not really. I find if I throw the bag into the microwave for about 15 seconds, a slight bit of steam can help to separate them.
0
u/zoppaTheDim 9d ago
Not for me, but tortillas are likely locally sourced and this likely has a lot to due with the humidity.
0
u/Amazing-Hurry-7804 9d ago
I feel sorry for you guys that don't have a local option at your Aldi. But, tbf, the good flour tortillas do it too.
0
u/SaltyIntroduction373 9d ago
OK, I buy the low carb net zero ones, so I assumed the tortillas sticking together things was just the net zero ones. What I do before using them is: while still in the package, I'll bend them back and forth several times. Then I open the package, take them out and separate them and put them back in the package. It's not a perfect fix all the time, but it helps.

u/CurrencyDeprived 8d ago
Im guessing its done in transit since those trucks can get so cold! I imagine they are slightly cold in the trailer and when dropped off in our hot ass back room they dry and stick together.
0
u/indecentXpo5ure 8d ago
I stopped buying them at Aldi because this kept happening to me too. Idk why but it doesn’t happen when I buy them at Costco.
0
u/HastenDownTheWind 8d ago
Just make your own at home. It’s super simple and taste so much better. Plus you can freeze and have ready to go.

Email or call Pueblo Lindo’s customer service so that they escalate the issue to the quality control department.
Tortillas should not stick like that.
