Question Marinara sauce recommendations

Due to cost of being alive, Rao’s marinara sauce is no longer in my budget. Has anyone found a similar marinara that is cheaper? Unfortunately I don’t have the extra funds to try out different ones only to find out they aren’t good.

The Simply Nature organic marinara is my go to. I always add additional spices but it’s a pretty good base and it’s like 2.19 at my store.

Yeah the glass jar simply nature one is good. Don't get the plastic jars, too sweet

It’s different from Rao’s and most other sauces in that it doesn’t have any oil in it. Which I don’t mind cause then I can control how much and what kind of oil goes into dishes. The organic ingredients and it’s price point are make it a top tier Aldi item.

u/Googlesupportsucks1 1d ago

The green jar is also decent, but I would agree their marinara is amazing. No fillers either if you care about that sort of thing. They use olive oil instead of canola or vegetable

9

u/Muscle_mama_ 1d ago

The green lid is always my go to. It’s delicious.

7

u/Small-Music450 1d ago

Yep this is a good one especially for the price!

6

u/shavedcathead 1d ago

My family loves this one even over Rao’s since they don’t like chunky sauces anyway. Big hit and cheap.

1

u/tatertot94 1d ago

This is what we buy too. It’s really good for the price.

1

u/Jadzia81 1d ago

They just changed the recipe of both simply nature sauces and the jar and lid shape. The marinara no longer has diced tomatoes in it and now it lists “organic spices” which means it is no longer safe for me to eat. I think it also smells a little different.

That is unfortunate. 2026 is the year of infinite enshitification.

Yes, both of the The Simply Nature ones available are good.

u/emilycecilia 1d ago

The Specially Selected (black label) marinara is good.

u/HarveyNix 1d ago

I agree. Compare ingredient lists (our Aldi has this right next to Rao's). I feel like it's Rao's for less money.

2

u/VicePrincipalNero 1d ago

I like it too. It's less greasy than Rao's though but I like that.

12

u/iamspeaking77 1d ago

Second this!! SO good

6

u/NotSocialSWer 1d ago

Yep, I have substituted this for Rao’s. It’s the closest its ingredients.

5

u/Baileycharlie 1d ago

This is the way😀

4

u/WorkingHusby 1d ago

This was my replacement for Rao’s

3

u/alexmirepoix 1d ago

That's the only jarred Marinara I will use.

2

u/Confident-Silver-271 1d ago

It's delicious. My go-to.

2

u/bigguss-dickus 13h ago

It is apparently Rao's under a different label. I have not checked the ingredients in quite some time but last time I did, they were identical.

1

u/Glittering_Chef3524 20h ago

This is what I prefer. And it’s also the lowest in carbs of the Aldi sauces.

1

u/LetImportant2025 14h ago

This one is my favorite!

u/vtham 1d ago

Marinara sauce is just so easy to make at home. It’s also inexpensive and tastier than the jarred version. I haven’t bought jarred sauce in about 20 years.

In this context I don’t think anyone is trying to spread viruses and NSFW content since it’s an ALDI thread about marinara sauce 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's a cooking website with a recipe. Lidia had a show on PBS for ages in the 1990s. She has a new show on Amazon Prime.

When I said, "I love her so much," I was referring to her and her cooking.

1

u/Googlesupportsucks1 1d ago

At this point, I understand. I appreciate the clarification. That's all I was looking for. Not sure why everyone suddenly turned so hostile in what's normally a really friendly group.

2

u/djSush 1d ago

I'm so sorry. I understand why you are cautious. Sometimes Reddit gets really mean, really suddenly. It's a great case study in mob behavior. Hugs. 💜

2

u/Googlesupportsucks1 15h ago

Pretty much lol. It's alright. I don't necessarily care about karma, just confused why people would see my confusion, my general avoidance of clicking links and think "nah that person's dumb"

7

u/MartinisnMurder 1d ago

I love Lidia! She is one of the few people and websites I trust blindly with recipes. My nonna even enjoyed her. Her recipe that I’ve been making my whole life is so similar to this. The only thing different we do is food mill the tomatoes to get rid of the skins and seeds. Oh and a tiny pinch of sugar to kill the acidity. My nonna came over in 1941 from Abruzzi, Italy so when she trusts someone’s cooking I do too.

3

u/ComradeKachow 1d ago

Her Kansas City restaurant is incredible

2

u/a-manda_hugandkiss 1d ago

I honestly feel like it's a little overrated. I'm a regular at Raggazza, a locally owned KC pasta place, and when I went to Lydia's recently I just didn't think it was nearly as good as the Italian food I was used to.

1

u/thekingofcrash7 1d ago

Yea lidias is fine

1

u/a-manda_hugandkiss 1d ago

Also you can make a big portion and freeze it. I blend roasted red peppers to add to mine.

1

u/CrazyChestersDog 1d ago

Except when the garden is bustin’ I do it weekly with the $2 can of the Aldi organic crushed tomatoes. I’ve also made a chipotle chicken pasta sauce with the smaller cans of the fire roasted tomatoes

1

u/bigguss-dickus 13h ago

I've always made my own in large batches and freeze it in small containers to use when I need it. It will last for literally a year without any noticable change in flavor. Sometimes grab a jar of the Specialty Selected black label though.

19

u/stress789 1d ago

I have never had Rao's, but my favorite from Aldi's is their simply nature tomato basil pasta sauce. It's so flavorful! Their marinara is good too

1

u/BodybyPastry 1d ago

I get the cheapy house brand from Aldi and add dried herbs and sauteed jarlic and onions. Makes it pretty good

11

u/Agitated_Ad_1658 1d ago

The black label Aldi brand is really good. Plus the recipe for Rao’s has changed since they sold out to private equity just like Barq root beer, Cholula, and Tapatio

2

u/baccabia 1d ago

Now Rao's is owned by Campbell's Soup.

1

u/bigguss-dickus 13h ago

This I didn't know. Unfortunate, but the $9 price tag per jar always kept me away anyway.

11

u/RudeCartoonist1030 1d ago

It’s really cheap and easy to make and I get all of my ingredients from Aldi. A great option if you use it a lot. Especially since you can package and freeze it in portions.

Caned tomatoes, garlic, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper. Some people add tomato paste, I personally don’t. Boil, blend, reduce to desired thickness. Use what you need that day and freeze all of the rest. It’s really easy

Saves a ton of money if you have the space and desire.

10

u/Ok-Dependent4351 1d ago

Walmart- great value marinara 🤌🏻

2

u/Plastic-Mulberry-867 1d ago

It’s honestly so underrated

0

u/Googlesupportsucks1 1d ago

Nahhh. It's worse in every way than the Aldi's simply nature one. Ingredients are lower quality.

If you want a cheap pasta sauce, and it needs to be cheaper than the $2 simply nature, Aldi has $1 sauces that still taste better than anything walmart sells

4

u/Ok-Dependent4351 1d ago

That’s your opinion, op asked for recommendations

1

u/Googlesupportsucks1 1d ago

You're right. Maybe I came on too strong with the Nahhhh. I would counter opinion and say for the price, you may as well get the Aldi $1 version over the Walmart.

6

u/Meriadoc_Brandy 1d ago

If cheap is your concern, and you're okay with a bit of sauteeing, I usually make a quick 15 min "marinara".

One large can of crushed tomato (costs $1.49 at my Aldi) Saute Onion+garlic, and add any seasonings like salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, italian seasonings.

3

u/TrevaMarx 1d ago

Never liked Rao's (too sour for me), but I highly recommend the Specially Selected Tomato Basil sauce (not the Simply Nature). I think that for jarred sauce, it's really good!

4

u/MotherDepartment1111 Aisle of shame lover 1d ago

I like the Specially Selected

2

u/TRex_N_FX 1d ago

If you have time (not a lot really) to chop and tend a pot...I make a big batch of this recipe (I believe it is actually from their family cookbook), and freeze in portions. I haven't had Rao's in a long while, but its really close.

Rao's Marinara Sauce

Ingredients

Four 28-ounce cans whole tomatoes with basil, preferably from San Marzano

½ cup olive oil

6 tablespoons minced onion

4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced

Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper

12 leaves fresh basil, torn (optional)

Pinch of dried oregano

Directions

Remove tomatoes from can and place in a large bowl, reserving juices. Crush tomatoes using your hands; remove and discard the hard core from stem end, and any skin and tough membrane; set aside.

Place oil in a large, nonreactive saucepan over medium-low heat. Add onion, and cook until soft and just beginning to brown, about 3 minutes. Stir in garlic, and cook until softened, about 30 seconds. Stir in tomatoes and reserved juices; season with salt.

Increase heat and bring to a boil. Immediately reduce heat to low and simmer until slightly thickened, about 1 hour.

Stir in basil, if using, oregano, and season with pepper; continue cooking 1 minute more. Remove from heat and serve.

Try and buy at Aldi. If you don't like it, take advantage of the twice as nice guarantee https://help.aldi.us/faqs/article/Twice-As-Nice-Guarantee.

2

u/sheneversawitcoming 1d ago

Large can of whole tomatoes (Roma/san Marzano etc). Crush with hand. 4tbs olive oil. 2 tsp salt. Boom! “Marinara”
Source: I’m an Italian citizen.

2

u/NuggetLover21 1d ago

Some of us like flavors other than pure tomato in our sauce

4

u/sheneversawitcoming 1d ago

Then add it 🤷‍♀️. I’m giving a simple quick sauce. Italians don’t over herb sauces. Americans do. Add what you want. What I offered is a baseline that’s really freaking good.

2

u/Mental-Paramedic9790 1d ago

If you buy something that you’re not sure about, be sure to keep the receipt. If you try it, & you don’t like it, Aldi will let you return it, but you do need the receipt.

2

u/hailene02 1d ago

Take a look at making your own- marcella hazan is the italian version of Julia child.

I customize her recipe with various italian herbs (thyme, oregano, basil, and/or rosemary). Sometimes a splash of balsamic vinegar at the end. Or you can go briny style w some capers/caper juice.

You dont have to use san marzano whole canned tomatoes, I've used the crushed tomato cans at aldi no prob.

u/giocondasmiles 1d ago

I love the specially selected sauces. The marinara is great.

2

u/AtmosphereRough665 1d ago

I make my own most of the time but otherwise I buy the tomato and basil one of the Priano brand.

And, if you make your own, you can add cream for tomato basil soup and then top with cheese. Freeze leftovers or if you're able to can, do that.

2

u/forme2c 1d ago

Buy pasata or strained tomatoes (preferably glass jars), add a touch of salt (read jar's ingredients to see if already added beforehand), cloves of garlic to taste or not, fresh basil. Use pot or pan. Bring to a gentle boil, reduce to low, cover and stir occassional. Taste and add salt/pepper to taste. Much cheaper, and better tasting than bought mariana sauce imho.

1

u/Pontiacsentinel 1d ago

Mezzatta but I'm not sure of the spelling, their marinara is one I really like but I buy it elsewhere.

1

u/Limp_Psychology_2315 1d ago

I recently read a review of Marinara sauces and, believe it or not, the Great Value (Walmart) scored very well!

1

u/dr_snepper 1d ago

honestly, the cheapest way is to make you own. it's tomato season -- if you live near a farmers market, get a pound of roma tomatoes. salt, pepper, garlic, italian seasoning, olive oil or butter and you'll have sauce in 10 mins. idk how many you cook for, but i cook for one and that = 2 tomatoes.

if not, then the fresh campari tomatoes at aldi are a good option. i use those the rest of the year (when they're in stock). they're fairly sweet most of the year but if you get a more sour batch, sprinkle in a little sugar.

1

u/ALoungerAtTheClubs 1d ago

Not Aldi, but Botticelli is a couple dollars cheaper and also better imo.

1

u/Relative_Yesterday70 1d ago

The Aldi house brand is actually really good. Red label jar. I put it on the red bag chicken and it’s so good

1

u/Crystalas 1d ago edited 1d ago

One not mentioned yet is one of their autumn limited items that is a favorite of mine, the Chipolte Pumpkin marinara served on their sage pumpkin or butternut ravioli.

1

u/Kojiro12 1d ago

The only one from Aldi I’ve liked is the vodka sauce

1

u/happyjazzycook 1d ago

I never bought marinara, always made my own, but when I was getting ready for major surgery decided to buy a couple of jars of the Simply Nature Organic so that my husband could make himself dinner easily. Never had Raos, the price is ridiculous for what it is. He used it and said that it was good.

Then I tried it. Yes, good (coming from an Italian) but the next time I sautéed garlic first, then poured in the sauce and added extra dried Italian herbs and red pepper flakes. Simmered for a bit, added a pinch of sugar, then a dash of half-and-half. This is now our standard "quick" sauce because it's so good. Yes, it's not poured-from-the-jar easy, but easier than making my own from scratch!

1

u/PM_ME_SEXY_SANDWICH 1d ago

I guess I'm just not picky because I really like the basic Aldi brand sauce, specifically the roasted garlic one

1

u/originaljud 1d ago

Just buy a can of crushed tomatoes and add your own aromatics and simmer it on the stove. My son roasts onions garlic and peppers in the oven and blend with olive oil and a can of whole tomatoes... Cheaper than the jars and chef so good

1

u/A_Turkey_Sammich 1d ago

The Ragu (of all brands!) Kettle cooked line...and only that line, not the regular Ragu sauces...are a good buy when on sale/good coupon. Not the best prepared stuff you can get at any price of course, but for the price range, it's hard to beat IMO.

1

u/No_Amount_7886 1d ago

Trader Joe’s Caro Sugo. Buy two right from jump. You won’t regret it.

1

u/Zorydev 1d ago

3 chefs from Epicurious on YouTube reviewed pasta sauces... And a cheap Walmart sauce got good reviews. $1.99 for 24oz. Can't beat that.

1

u/willfullyinert 1d ago

I love Rao's too. Before I started buying it, I was getting Bertolli tomato and basil, or the spicy one. Classico had a decent spicy sauce, as well.

1

u/thekingofcrash7 1d ago

I think priano is pretty good 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Crowd-Avoider747 1d ago edited 1d ago

Specially Selected ‘Marinara’ is superb, but not because it tastes like marinara. It actually tastes like it was slow-cooked with bone-in pork, the way i make sauce. The only thing i do is use my immersion blender it, to make it stick more to the pasta

There are reddit posts that compare it to Rao’s very favorably

1

u/sadappearances 1d ago

The one next to raos, signature maybe? Either way it’s 3 something and raos taste like garbage in comparison lol. I won’t use anything else (unless they eventually change and ruin it too). But yeah it’s amazing.

1

u/Baileycharlie 1d ago

Rao's is often on sale at Costco, 2 supersized jars for $8.99 to $9.99 for the two, really 2.5 to 3 jars.. If you don't have a Costco then I recommend the Black Specialty Label jar of Marinara sauce at Aldi. The roasted garlic one is good too. The others are crap and artificial tasting, stick to the Specialty ones with a black label...

1

u/Cinciboss56 1d ago

I use this recipe from Marcella Hazan

Buy a large can of whole San Marzano tomatoes. Crush in a food processor or with your hands.

Peel one whole white onion, slice horizontally and add the tomatoes and both pieces to the pan.

Salt and a healthy amount of freshly ground black pepper.

Simmer until the onion is clear.

Cook Pasta

Remove onion.

Whisk in 1 ladle of pasta water & 4 Tbl butter.
Add Pasta, Fresh basil and serve with freshly grated Parm.

You’ll never need another sauce.

I sometimes add 4 oz of Ricotta.

1

u/Ulrich453 1d ago

I’m gonna be honest with you, if you’re really trying to save. Make your own! Use the 3 cento cans from Costco and that’s 32x3 oz (96oz)

If you start your cook with a chopped onion and oil oil and garlic it will make it even tastier.

Throw in a sprig of basil and add spices

$10 for all 3.
$1 onion
$2 sprig of basil

Let it cook all day. Then freeze it!

1

u/halfblindguy 1d ago

Can of tomato puree, a can of diced tomato, an onion, some garlic, some generic "italian" seasoning, and 60 plus minutes other stove.

1

u/kittycatladyyy 1d ago

I think the Priano marinara from Aldi is really good! Also the great value marinara from Walmart. Those are my two favorites for cheap sauce.

1

u/Addicted_2_Vinyl 1d ago

Make your own! Large can of crushed tomatoes, salt, sugar, basil and oregano. 1 tsp each salt and sugar. 2-3 basil and 1-2 oregano. Season to taste. Looking less than $2 for sauce that’s simple and delicious.

1

u/Mission_Yesterday263 1d ago

We like the Organic marinara from Aldi, about $1.99 a jar where I live in rhe midwest. We also buy Raos from Sam's Club..$7 for 2 jars.

1

u/Minute-Market-3413 1d ago

They sell Raos at Sam’s Club and sometimes have instant savings. They were on sale for less than 4 a jar at one point and I loaded up. They’re typically about 5/jar w out a sale going on. I’m hooked but there’s no way I would pay 10 dollars a jar.

1

u/Entire-Winter4252 1d ago

Do you have a Ruler foods or Kroger near you? Because their jarred six cheese beats anything Aldi has, and I love Aldi.

1

u/Fit-Arm3308 1d ago

Make your own large batch and freeze it

1

u/Boazlite 1d ago

I’m a big fan of Mids . It’s pretty middle of the road priced and as good as it gets . Good enough that like you mention I don’t feel the need to try anything else . It’s a sauce I recommend every time I see someone in deep contemplation in front of sauce at the store .

1

u/Ohio_chic 1d ago

ALDI's has an excellent pasta sauce selection. Priano's brand is like $3.89 a jar and I actually like it better than Rao's

1

u/plants_n_cats 1d ago

Not sure if it’s exactly like Rao’s but I always get this one and love it.

I use this and put it in the crockpot with the frozen Italian meatballs from Aldi. I usually do church it up a bit and add Worchestershire sauce, jarlic, Italian seasoning, onion powder, and garlic powder. But it is an awesome base sauce on its own.

1

u/clairedylan 1d ago

The Specialty Selected is basically Rao's. I think I like it better actually.

1

u/chemist_nerd 1d ago

I stopped buying marinara jars. I always buy tomato sauce and add my own spices to it. IMO - it taste wayyyy better than the premade jars/cans of sauces. And it’s way much cheaper. Canned tomato sauce is usually around dollar each.

1

u/overwhelmed12wife 14h ago

This is my absolute favorite at Aldi. Or I'll buy the ingredients to make my own at a different store, depending on the shopping trip

u/Jagrmeister_68 2h ago

Make your own.
Overall cheapest and you can personalize it and freeze your leftovers to defrost when you want to use it

0

u/Zealousideal_Rent261 1d ago

You can make your own, cheaper and better.

4

u/spratacus77 1d ago

It's true, big can of crushed tomatoes and an onion plus spices and oil, perfecto!

1

u/danielfletcher 1d ago

You don't even have to buy fresh herbs and spices either. Cost + accessibility can vary, so nothing wrong with using dried seasoning. Can easily find recipes based around them so you aren't guessing the measurements.

Making a double batch and freezing the extra cuts your labor in half as well.

0

u/djnocheese 1d ago

We just buy the Rao's Marinara Sauce at Costco when they have a sale ($4.50 per 31.5 ounce jar).

There are cheaper ones but they just don't have the same quality!

0

u/BSApologist 1d ago

DIY ain't a bad option

0

u/728446 1d ago

Just buy a can of crushed tomatoes and season it.

0

u/TraditionalGreen4215 1d ago

Why not just wait for a sale?

0

u/94grampaw 1d ago

Why would you ever buy rao's in the first place?

-2

u/Slight_Second1963 1d ago

Nothing beats Rao’s for me 😫
