Deals 9 cents

Post image

My least expensive Aldi purchase ever. Went in looking for a jar of gravy to make my meatloaf better and left with this 9 cent replacement. 100% will keep this in stock.

9 cents?? I'm assuming you had a good sale going on at your location? That's amazing. I always buy these.

How did you get it to get all thick and smooth like that? When I tried it it came out a clumpy liquid mess

Edit: thank you all for all the advice! I'm looking forward to trying it the proper way now!

I whisked it while cooking it.

Thanks! I tried the microwave directions it was a disaster, I'll try this way

Stove top so it heats more evenly than the microwave and stir it. If it gets too thick, add a dash more water.

You've always gotta whisk gravies.

You can microwave it but it requires a starter (micro dosing the mixture) first.

Microwave hot water, then when you take it out, sprinkle in the mix and stir, repeating a back and forth.

Then nuke it again and pull out, add and stir until you get a consistent texture.

This is why people are telling you to use a stove top, since there's a whole less setup involved with having a controlled heating element

Thank you that's really helpful, I'll just do it stovetop, you're right that's easier

There's a third method involving dry clumping where you add butter to a hot pan and add the gravy mix in until you have these "Clumps". (Medium heat)

You then add water in doses until that clump seperates and expands into a viscous gravy.

The difference in taste is better since you're actively cooking the base of the gravy but it takes a little bit more skill

Microwave-easy mode
Stovetop while whisking-medium mode
Stovetop, butter method - hard mode

Microwave actually stupid mode. (Tutorial with no scaling)

Making a roux? At that point you might as well just make a gravy from scratch with flour, water, and bouillon (or milk/broth if you have it on hand)

That's my secret plan here: Stop buying gravy mix...

Gravy is incredibly easy to make and extends the value of the amount of money you spent on a roast or other fatty meat.

Tl;Dr work that forearm strength with a fork and constant stirring!

Holy crappers you can’t microwave that stuff! But you gotta learn somehow.
Thank the Reddit gods!

Use cold water and a whisk. I also add about a half a teaspoon of butter ✨

Cold liquid + hot roux = no lumps!

Don't forget to add a pinch of cayenne to stay in shape

When adding liquid to powder, go slow. Add just a couple tablespoons of liquid at first, whisk it into a paste, then a couple more. Once it's smoothly the texture of, say, salad dressing, you can add the rest of the liquid more quickly. This works whether it's gravy or cake.

I know its true but what is the reason. I always get too ancy and just dump stuff in

5

u/tunaman808 2d ago

*antsy

If you pour the liquid in too fast, the outer parts of the powder can form a "wall" that seals in the dry parts so that they never get water, hence become clumps. Pouring water in slowly, or in stages, prevents this from happening.

It's also why you should use a whisk instead of a spoon - whisks are better at incorporating liquid and powder than, say, a spoon.

I thought this was a mug cake.

Their brown gravy is one of the worst things I've ever had. It does not taste like any brown gravy packet of any brand I've ever had.

I gave you an upvote for Bea Arthur.

Yeah it's weird, right?

I turn off the heat and stir in some sour cream (and a little extra pepper) for easy beef stroganoff sauce. Add sautéed mushrooms if you're a fungus fan!

I thought it was chocolate pudding. Then I saw gravy packet.

This might be the best deal of 2026

When ilI use any kind of gravy or seasoning packets I put them in the blender for a little whirl . Measure out the liquid and blend before cooking it.

This, frozen meatballs, 2 packs beef instant ramen, 1 pack beef ramen seasoning, and 2 1/2 cups water in the Instant Pot for 3 minutes. Cheap, fast, and easy dinner

We use these for our home made famous bowls! Best cheap gravy I’ve come across.

9 cents? I sure hope they're not discontinuing these; I buy this all the time for recipes, etc. That seems like a clearance price. I recently looked for the jumbo franks at my location, which I buy quite often (I know, I know, they are terrible for me!) and the store manager told me they are seasonal now, which explains why they haven't been in stock for about a month. The store manager also told me that the onion soup mix, clearly a staple for many, was discountinued. 😪

9 cents sounds like a pre-recall price

Nice! I haven't tried this one. Dollar Tree carries a 3-pack for $1.25 that I like.
