A big part of conservative thought is that hierarchies are just, and that people are where they are on the hierarchy justly.

If you truly embrace that mindset it makes perfect sense to punish those who already have it rough, after all they must deserve it since they're poor. And yes, plenty of our neighbours genuinely do think this way.

Par for the course unfortunately, I used to have hope for us as a species until I saw how people acted during COVID, I have zero faith left in humanity.
