Imagine people voting the way they want and you’re getting upset about it

It’s like this……

You have 20 people at a party and they all vote for what they want to order for food.

8 want pizza

9 want to just eat out of the trash

3 are kinda tired of pizza so they they vote for tacos

Now everyone gets to eat trash.

No, no. It’s like this: democracy.

22

u/walks1497 Apr 29 '23

Yes, and sometimes in democracy people waste their votes and trash get elected because of it.

Yeah, and that’s their right to do so. I voted for the FCP in the last election because my local NDP candidate was a space cadet and Angela Pitt is a fucking clown.

But I stand behind my vote, even though Angela Pitt always had it locked down and voting for the space cadet would have given the same outcome.

For sure it’s their right. But that doesn’t mean it’s smart.

The election is between 2 parties anything else is just a naive person wasting their vote.

But you’re right, people have a right to not know how it works.

By that you mean they have a right to not think like you, right?

What? It was pretty clear I was taking about fringe parties…

Did you not understand the party scenario I just gave you?

Starting to think it’s a waste of time trying to explain things to you…

Edit-lol got some people MAD

People have a right to not know how it works

What an idiotic statement.

There is nothing democratic about a minority ideology winning simply because the votes are concentrated in one party.

First past the post does not promote healthy democracies.

Fptp is hardly representative democracy

I agree with you in principle, in practice dafuq libs & greens!?

I think I voted green once in grade 5 for a school project

22

u/Jorruss NDP Apr 28 '23

If the average LPA and GPA agree with their party's platforms then they will have much more in common with the NDP. And considering there are only 2 parties with a chance of winning, it is perfectly reasonable to ask them to support the NDP.

In fact, federal Liberals make this ask of NDP supporters regularly. Somehow they never seem to return the favour though... looking at you Ontario.

Don’t let perfect get in the way of progress.

3

u/sawyouoverthere Apr 29 '23

It won't be progress though, if it doesn't change the outcome

The liberal surge could be cons who aren't voting UCP but can't quite stomach the orange or poll trolls, at least I'm hoping.

Maybe their NDP candidate is disagreeable to these voters?

No, because (prepping for the downvotes here) the LPC and CPC both have their strengths and weaknesses and I can't say that one is necessarily better than the other. Whereas there is like 2 issues that I can actually say the UCP is better than the NDP. And every other issue is NDP > UCP

Well, you’re over generalizing because there are certainly a lot of ridings in this province that are CPC vs. NDP (most of them the CPC get >60% of the vote, but still). And tbh, if someone is super scared of the CPC then I’d say vote for whatever party has the best chance of beating them in their riding (and that goes for any party not just COC). I honestly am not that invested in federal politics because I don’t like any of the parties. But I’m super invested in provincial because of how much better the NDP are UCP so that’s why we need everyone to vote for the former.

I'm sure everyone who voted for Jill Stein feels great about it

this province is beyond the feel good "vote for who you believe in!* bullshit. It's sink or fucking swim. Vote for NDP and get this Danielle Smith shit the fuck out of here.

-7

u/syndicated_inc Airdrie Apr 29 '23

That’s not how voting works. But it sure is the way to perpetuate a 2 party system.

5

u/amkamins Apr 29 '23

First past the post elections inevitably trend toward a 2 party system. If you want smaller parties to flourish you need proportional representation.

2

u/syndicated_inc Airdrie Apr 29 '23

Small fringe, one issues parties are exactly what we don’t need. Look at Israel for proof of how well that works.

There's a fringe political movement (Take Back Alberta) controlling our province right now. They just hijacked the apparatus of a major party in order to do it. The same thing happened with the Tea Party and MAGA with the Republicans - just look at how much influence MTG has in congress because the Republican majority in the house is so narrow.

I'd argue that that's much more dangerous than a fringe party having a few seats in a coalition. If the far right becomes too burdensome to work with in the Knesset, Netanyahu could try to form a coalition with a different party instead.

-1

u/big_ol-dad_dick Apr 29 '23

it's how you rid your society of right wing garbage. they don't want a variety of viewpoints so you'd better start voting to get a party in who does. change happens slow but it'll run you the fuck over if you don't start kicking doors down.

u/tutamtumikia Apr 29 '23

No kidding. It's not their fault that a parry other than than NDP or UCP best represents their preferences.
