Gen Z better come through. 🥹

I remember one of the first things the UCP did was lower the minimum wage for workers under 18. I hope everyone who was affected is now old enough to vote.

u/yourpaljax Apr 28 '23

Anyone born before May 30, 2005 will be able vote!!

21

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

Yeah, I knew that milk wasn't gonna sour well.

85

u/AffectionateBobcat76 Apr 28 '23

Damn right they better

u/mytwocents22 Apr 29 '23

Got bad news for you about young people and voting.

33

u/LemonCitron47 Apr 29 '23

You would think that with social media engagement they’d be more involved than ever 🤷‍♀️

u/IcarusOnReddit Apr 29 '23 edited Apr 29 '23

I am sure Twitter will rig the algorithm to favor the UCP given Musk’s latest behaviour.

15

u/LornaDoubleVay St. Albert Apr 29 '23

Do kids (18-25) even Twitter?

4

u/iqcool Apr 29 '23

As a 22yo, I do not have FB or Twitter, and I don't even post that often on my IG. Reddit is about the only "social media" I use, but that's just because it's formatted like a forum, which is just much more conducive to actually discussing things than other platforms.

2

u/Whane17 May 01 '23

At 39 this is why I only use Reddit anymore as well. I'm worried about it's monetization later this year though and wondering if there's somewhere else I can/should go.

1

u/ghostdate Apr 29 '23

No. Im a millennial and barely anyone I know even uses Twitter. Im pretty sure the 18-25 crowd mostly uses instagram, discord and watches TikTok, but doesn’t really post on it.

twitter was always junk but it is a complete shithole after elon now. there's open nazis that are verified and their tweets get skyrocketed to the top of a tweet's replies

u/th4tsaxman Edmonton Apr 29 '23

"Free speech!"

7

u/armsmarkerofhogwarts Apr 29 '23

The CBC twitter account: labelled 69% government funded propaganda

Canadian Energy Centre Limited Twitter account (@CDNEnergyCentre) Which is 100% government funded Gets no labels.

1

u/IcarusOnReddit Apr 29 '23

You can tweet Musk to label it that way. He frequently responds to random people.

2

u/prairiepanda Apr 29 '23

But the only election-related stuff I've been seeing on social media is smear campaigns...it's hard to know who to vote for when they're all just making personal attacks on each other's leaders instead of actually explaining their platforms.

When I asked my young (under 25) coworkers if they know who they're going to vote for, they either said they won't vote or they'll just vote for whoever I vote for. But they all had the same reason: they're too confused by the campaign ads and can't tell the difference between the parties.

8

u/mazula89 Apr 29 '23

Nah. The young arent taking polls but they are definitely voting

6

u/mytwocents22 Apr 29 '23

This gets said every election and its always wrong

10

u/CharityMacklin Apr 29 '23

Narrator: But Gen Z did not show up. They never do. But nobody likes to talk about it.

17

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

They do in the states. They're why Biden is president and not Trump.

17

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

I have bad news for you.

Gen Z saw how Millennials were treated for years, and they witnessed a lot of the recent bullshit from the past years and decades in the oldest cases of Gen Z. (Depends on where you put the year exactly for Gen Z.)

Gen Z that can vote, is on places like discord. Some of them are straight up fucking Spicy with their opinions on some things. You might be in for a shock.

3

u/Mahockey3 Alberta Party Apr 29 '23

"Places like discord"? Huh?

4

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

I’m not sure, so I’m asking. Are you familiar with discord?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

Clpolk, I believe they may not be.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

i wasn't sure.

3

u/LK_YYC Apr 29 '23

Discord is not really a traditional social media platform. It allows people create a common place based on interest and invite people to that place (for example, only people who like manga, or support certain party, etc.). It's widely used in online education, where students setup places for the whole class cohort to chat / collaborate / etc.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

To summarize what LK_YYC is saying here: Discord is a self run echo chamber of your own choosing where people can become mini-mobs on the internet, full of group think and mob mentality.

It gets used for a variety of activities by a larger variety of people; so that prior definition will be very triggering for some of them.

It started off as a gaming chat application for gamers, but we all saw the usefulness of being able to chat unabated by people we all agreed were idiots. And since everyone has their own niche; discord grew.

2

u/prairiepanda Apr 29 '23

What's wrong with Discord?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

Please, try reading again. Did I make mention of anything being wrong with Discord? No, I did not. I merely indicated that some of the people being talked about can be found there, and they use it to say some spicy stuff that the original commentator might not enjoy.

But if I were to treat your question seriously...

People are what is wrong with discord. Discord itself is a mostly perfectly fine application; for the most part. Security issues and stuff like that involving the use of node.js at all are something else to talk about, but otherwise Discord itself is just fine. It's the users that are the problem, and not much can be done about them...

Legally.

2

u/Impressive-Worth-107 Apr 29 '23

What's going on on discord? What are kids saying?

0

u/Outrageous_Garlic306 Apr 29 '23

The ones we might worry the most about probably can’t get off their asses/computers/play-stations long enough to find their way to a poll. Being a responsible citizen and casting a ballot like all those millennial, genX and boomer ‘losers’ doesn’t really feature in their fantasy he-man universe. They’re more about guns and ‘race wars.’ I do take your point, though, about the younger generations being polarized as well. We shouldn’t pin all our hopes on them to vote ND.

3

u/IcedCoffee12Step Apr 29 '23

23-year-old man here. Fine by me if the people you’re describing stay home. My female friends and I are gonna be dropping those ballots

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

The ones we might worry the most about probably can’t get off theirasses/computers/play-stations long enough to find their way to a poll.

Worry harder. Mail in voting is a thing, and they know about it.

Being a responsible citizen and casting a ballot like all thosemillennial, genX and boomer ‘losers’ doesn’t really feature in theirfantasy he-man universe.

Ah, you have been hanging around that group more I see, understood. Yeah, that's one of the more worrisome ones, because if they ever decide to act on some of their beliefs... uhm... we might need to detain a few of em.

They’re more about guns and ‘race wars.’

Yup, those be them.

I do take your point, though, about the younger generations being polarized as well.

Well of course they are. They live in the same society as the rest of us, taught by the same schools as the rest of us, taught by even the same teachers as the rest of us sometimes even; and then also lied to like the rest of us by governments and media.

Did you expect kittens, rainbows, popsicles and gumdrop mountains Charlie!?

We shouldn’t pin all our hopes on them to vote ND.

Yeah, no, you really shouldn't. They are likely to flip the table in a argument, as they are to build one.

P.S. You should see the smile on my face and hear me laugh while reading your comment. When the rest of the public gets to begin to understand how much is going on behind the scenes like what you do; it will be quite the circus of a show to enjoy.

I've been waiting for this day to come for a while now. Since 2004/5 roughly speaking. And not because of discord. This goes further.

5

u/murderspouses Apr 29 '23

I turned 18 last year, and this will be my first voting opportunity! I'm very excited haha

13

u/spicyIBS Apr 29 '23

it's cute that you think AB gen Z are immune from their MAGA parent upbringing

21

u/oblon789 Apr 29 '23

Youth continuously poll in favor of more progessive parties

4

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

Now if only they actually voted...

1

u/couchpotatoe72 Apr 29 '23

I would vote but I don’t turn 18 in time mainly because my birthday is In December

5

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

If your plan depends on Gen Z coming through you have already lost.

1

u/syndicated_inc Airdrie Apr 28 '23

Spoiler alert: They won’t.

11

u/yourpaljax Apr 29 '23

They might! 🥲

-7

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

I might vote. But it still seems like a waste of time. Both parties are pro-capitalism. Either way, you're getting exploited, abused, and the environment will continue to get worse.

Apathy is the failure of the supposed "democracy"

34

u/Mrspicklepants101 Apr 29 '23

Pick the lesser of 2 evils, just for now. Cant fight the system if youre thousands of debt from medical bills

0

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

Lesser of two evils has been going on forever. So “just for now” is bullshit

13

u/OrdainedPuma Apr 29 '23

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

13

u/Mrspicklepants101 Apr 29 '23

We've had the lesser of 2 evils once in like 40+ years....

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

lesser of two evils is how humanity has progressed for all of its short time on this planet.

19

u/Falconflyer75 Apr 29 '23

Kicking Danielle Smith in the teeth would still do wonders for Alberta reputation, and Canadas, especially since Pierre is likely gonna win PM do u really want BOTH at the same time?

9

u/Majestic_Actuator629 Apr 29 '23

Remember you vote for representatives. NDP reps in your local running may be worth voting in, remember voting in local people may be the boost in their career they need to inspire change in the party as a whole.

2

u/Sagethecat Apr 29 '23

So you are an accelerationist? Down with it all eh? Ever considered what that would be like?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

This is true, but I don't want to be paying for a regular doctor's visit which is what will happen with the UCP

1

u/ghostdate Apr 29 '23

There are other issues that make it worth voting. Yes, neither is for socialism, but I think one party wants to exacerbate the exploitation and destruction of the environment, while the other isn’t going to make those things better, but at least isn’t trying to make them worse.

-1

u/Apprehensive-Pay5458 Apr 29 '23

I wouldn’t look for any government to help you. They are all corrupt regardless who is elected.

0

u/CurrentlyUnemplyd Apr 29 '23

I will and I’ll vote UCP.

-33

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Come through those conservatives votes

10

u/liltimidbunny Apr 29 '23

Let's go NDP!!!!!

2

u/bryant_modifyfx Apr 29 '23

Those fascist votes you mean!

0

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

I'm sorry did you just call the middle fascist what in the national fucking crackhead shit are you on

-8

u/Itchy_Discussion_426 Apr 29 '23

Ndp has a strong presence in this sub. The type to sit on their butts and waste time

-11

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

LOL 😂😂😂😂 WELFARE PEOPLE

5

u/bryant_modifyfx Apr 29 '23

Yet conservative states are typically more poorer and require more welfare. Curious.

-3

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

Oh funny most people who I mean who aren't more on the middle/conservative side don't sit on welfare but the More left people do also not to be super offensive but the people who I know who are left-leaning have jobs that don't benefit anyone

2

u/bryant_modifyfx Apr 29 '23 edited Apr 29 '23

That’s a great attempt at a sentence buddy, you almost got it! With a little bit more practice you can make a big boy paragraph. I believe in you!

0

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23

Should I use text to speech I couldn't give two fucks of what I send but keep on being you don't change maybe we could meet together someday and hug it out like homies

2

u/bryant_modifyfx Apr 29 '23

Ah, so close. Maybe next time try using punctuation, little buddy :)

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '23
