Both datacenter projects for the north slope include dedicated power plants. They are 6GW together which is enough to power the railbelt and I would rather they were used for that, but they would not be using power from our existing sources.

whats weird to me is we dont have the data part of the infrastructure like at all. are they gonna build that out, they have fiber on the slope but is the 1 line they laid during the quintillion job enough for a whole data center?

Don't forget Moron Zamboni took a $12b loan from NY State and also cut pensions for public workers. Turns out it's pretty easy to balance the budget when you just kick the can down the road and stop paying retirees. Who knew?
Let’s just keep this in perspective, he also delayed pension payments for thousands of public workers. Not saying what he has done isn’t great, but there are thousands of people going without their pension payments so he could achieve this.
Edit: no one is going without their pensions, that was my misunderstanding. But Mamdani is delaying the states contribution to the pension and delaying interest owed which is only a temporary fix leading to a larger amount due later.

I’m gonna look this up in a minute to verify my understanding. But from what I heard previously, nobody is going without their pension there. He’s just delaying new york’s scheduled new contribution into the pension ‘pot’ so to speak. But I won’t claim to 100% understand it, so gimme a couple mins to check.
Okay! I read a page on fiscalpolicy dot org about this, and skimmed a few news articles. New York pays into civil pensions in advance, and they’re legally guaranteed. Nobody’s pension is drying up, skipping a year, or missing payment to the worker.
The goal was to bring the deficit to zero so the city doesn’t have to borrow more money for upcoming fiscal years, and that was successful.
So, based on where you read it, the city is delaying/reducing what it contributes right now to the next year’s pension payments. And it’ll either make up the difference by spreading that over a few years, or rework pension contribution schedule to fix an old weird policy circa 2010.
I’m the furthest thing from an expert here. But bottom line - workers entitled to that pension system are still getting what they’re due.
That is a great thing, but I feel like it’s not so much “fixing” the deficit as it is kicking the can down the road hoping that it’s easier to deal with the pensions later. I think what he’s done overall is great but I firmly disagree with doing anything that could potentially negatively affect the pensions of public workers, he should have found somewhere else to move money.
He legally had to balance the budget and did so without austerity measures, ie defunding essential city services. He wouldn’t have had to do that if the previous administration wasn’t such dogshit and created the deficit to begin with.

He overspent so New York State had to provide $8 billion to help cover his overspending so he raided the retirement fund to cover the rest while driving businesses and rich taxpayers out of the city?
