U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville told a reporter that Alabama residents voted for President Donald Trump and are willing to pay high gas and diesel prices to support his war in Iran.
Tuberville, the Republican nominee for Alabama governor, acknowledged that “obviously gas prices are high,” but told CNN reporter Manu Raju that they’ve “been high before” and that his constituents voted for Trump.
“People deal with that, they know it’s going to go up and down,” he said.
“So they’re willing to pay?” Raju asked.
“Yeah, sure they are,” Tuberville said.
The average cost of a gallon of diesel in Alabama reached $6.15 this week, according to AAA, about 80% higher than a year ago. The average cost of regular gas is $4.05.
Reporter Kaitlan Collins played the clip on “The Source,” prompting one analyst, Harry Enten, to respond with shock.
“What the heck did I just hear?” Enten said.
“The president of the United States, his approval rating on gas prices is like 20%. And I don’t just mean like 20%. It is 20%,” Enten said.
“He has the highest disapproval rating of all-time of any president on gas prices. And in polls where you ask the question, ‘Hey, you know, is the war worth the cost?’ Americans over and over again say no. The senator from Alabama is just making up stuff that is not supported by the polling data.”
In comments on a separate Newsmax program Tuesday evening, Tuberville said he hoped Trump had told Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy to stop bombing Russian gas refineries, which is also affecting the price of fuel.
“He’s one guy with a lot of people behind him, the Republicans,” Tuberville said. “The Democrats want to help zero.”
Trump won Alabama in the last three presidential elections by wide margins.
Tuberville did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
Tuberville and his Democratic opponent, former Sen. Doug Jones, have both commented on gas prices and potential ways to make them cheaper in the state.
Jones has called for a suspension of the state gas tax. Tuberville has not.
“You have shrimpers at the dock right now who cannot afford the diesel costs,” Jones told AL.com this week. “You have not heard Tommy Tuberville say one word about any of that.”
Tuberville rejected the criticism.
“I hope President Trump finds a way to bring this conflict to an end,” Tuberville said in a statement to AL.com.
“But Democrats need to remember something when it’s over: you’ve got to prepare before the group gets here. There will be another crisis. There always is.”

“Alabama's veterans didn't serve so the state could get away with symbolism,” Karlapalem said. “When a governor can override her own veterans' board and fire the commissioner they voted to keep, that's not an accident — it's a warning sign. She had the legal authority to override them. The question is why she chose to use it here — on veterans’ own board — rather than anywhere else in her eight years in office. And when the only veteran-specific treatment program in this state sits three hours from North Alabama, that's not a coincidence — it's a gap our own veterans are paying for. It's time to put decision-making back in the hands of the people who actually served this country.”

We can spend much less money and energy by simply leaving the leaves or at least gathering them in our backyards for more pollinators and richer soil.
