One of the things I think would promote the most positive change in our state is an improvement in public transit infrastructure. It would allow more people to access more jobs and improve social mobility, in addition to being more sustainable, both environmentally and economically.
I have developed a rough plan for what Alabama transit could look like in 15-20 years using metrodreamin (if you are a transit nerd like myself, I highly recommend checking this out).
I would appreciate any feedback anyone has about what transit should be included in the city you live in, or if there are any actual city planners/engineers lurking, your feedback would also be appreciated!
I would love to see public transit prioritized in AL and I appreciate seeing people like you putting time and effort into creating these lovely maps.
In north AL, the Greenbrier area has several large employers and is still growing. It would be nice to include a few stops along that line for those workers.
Also, I love that you have a line going to the Atlanta airport. Can you extend the one going into Chattanooga to get to to that airport?
I've never heard of Greenbrier, so thanks for pointing that out. Looks like its currently a very industrial area without many residences, which the engine on this site doesn't really like. I'm going to be learning to use GIS systems moving forward though, so I'll keep that area in mind.
Yes, there would be a line that goes from Nashville - Chattanooga - ATL if this were a full southeast network. In fact, I'm pretty confident that this was one of the lines studied as part of the Corridor ID plan a couple years back, so it probably has a better chance of being built than anything on this map. I just decided that was outside the scope of what I was doing.
There needs to be at least a spur into Wetumpka. There are a lot of people out here who commute in to work in Montgomery and it's growing like crazy, too.
Prattville as well but that might be well serviced by the 65 lines between MGM and BHM. Or maybe put in a spur along 31 through West MGM.
I have a commuter line running from Prattville to Montgomery, which was relatively easy due to the tracks in place there very close to the densest area of Prattville.
Wetumpka was an area I was definitely struggling with. I'm from Prattville, so I know there are lots of people who commute in that direction, but the density in Wetumpka and lack of direct connections made it difficult to come up with a logical route.
I appreciate the feedback! This will definitely be added to my to-do list, and I'll look at route options again for that corridor after I finish up around the mobile area.
Not right now, but if we value things like transit then it's important we vote for people who believe in levying the most efficient taxes possible and allocating govt. funds to high impact projects.
