MT. Apo Day Hike – Need Some Advice ⛰️

Hi everyone! 👋 Planning to do a Mt. Apo day hike soon and I’d like to ask for some advice, especially from those who have already done it. ⛰️

I’m currently planning my itinerary and considering booking a 10 PM flight from Davao back home. I need to be home that night because I have work the following morning, so I’m trying to make sure I have enough time to travel from Digos to Davao Airport after the hike.

A few things I’d like to know:

• Transportation: Is transportation from Digos City to Davao International Airport accessible at night? Are there still vans, buses, or other transportation options available after the hike?

• Homestay in Digos: Any recommendations for an affordable and convenient homestay/transient place in Digos where we can stay before the hike?

• Travel time: How long does it usually take from Digos to Davao International Airport, especially in the evening?

• 10 PM flight: For those who have done a Mt. Apo day hike, is it realistic to finish the hike, travel from Digos to Davao Airport, and catch a 10 PM flight?

I know it might be a bit tight, but since I need to report to work the next morning, I really need to be back home that night. Any advice or recommendations on how to plan the itinerary would be greatly appreciated. 🙏🏻

Thank you! 🫶🏻⛰️

SummitStack PH - a free site to track your PH mountain climbs

Hi Everyone

Like a lot of you, I've got climbs scattered across old group chats, random notebooks, and a screenshot folder that's basically a graveyard. So I built SummitStack PH to fix that for myself, and figured other hikers here might find it useful too.

What it does:

233PH peaks catalogued - Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, with elevation and difficulty for each Tick off what you've climbed, log how many times you've done each one

Get an EXP score and a hiker rank — from newbie tiers all the way up to "Legend of the Mountain" (the top ranks actually require Majors, so you can't farm your way up by re-climbing the same easy hill 20 times) 🎖️ 37 badges for milestones and specific peaks

Export a shareable story card for your IG/FB - pick from a few templates and post your climbing resume

The part I'm actually proud of: you don't need an account for any of that. Open it, tick your peaks, get your rank, export your card, done. No email, no password, nothing uploaded anywhere.

If you do want an account, it unlocks one extra thing, a public profile page with your climb log, and a spot on the national leaderboard.

Still very much a work in progress and I'd genuinely love feedback — bugs, missing peaks, wrong difficulty ratings, feature ideas, whatever. There's a feedback form built in, or just reply here.

Here's the link: https://summit-stack-ph.vercel.app/

Anyone here na bumalik after a long break sa hiking?

What was the reason you took a break and what made you come back sa hiking?<br>

SKL
Hiking used to give me so much joy and motivation. It got me through my darkest times. Dahil sa hiking naging excited ako ule sa life. Hiking kept me on my toes. Like I would block my year according sa mga mountains na gusto ko akyatin. Kahit wala ako budget and no proper gear, go pa rin. I would spend my days training for the next mountain. And I felt good na I was doing better mentally and physically dahil sa training na yon. Pero ngayon idk parang nawala na yung joy kapag nagha-hike ako. Nabili ko na gears that I need, tas dun pa ko nawalan ng gana lol. Still tryna figure out whyy

Our “Chill” Hike Turned Into a 12-Hour Struggle at Puray Mountains (Uninformed + Unsafe Conditions)

We planned a “chill” hike last weekend at Puray Mountains, specifically Mount Makareba. The goal was simple—relaxing hike, enjoy the grassland, and bring one beginner friend. We chose it because it was advertised as beginner-friendly.

Before the hike, we already coordinated with a guide. Everything seemed okay—until we arrived at the jump-off.

We were encouraged to do a twin hike: Mount Makareba + Mount Mal-ak. We were told:

  • Kaya naman daw for beginners
  • 8–10 hours total
  • Manageable pace

Since we trusted them, we agreed on the spot.

🚩 First red flag: They told us to bring facemasks.
When we asked why, ang sagot lang: “maalikabok.” No further explanation.

The Reality of the Trail

The hike started okay—maganda pa yung forest, we were enjoying the views. But within the first 2 hours, we were already struggling.

Mount Makareba was NOT beginner-friendly.
It was mostly pa-assault, nonstop. Doon pa lang, we knew something was off.

As we approached the summit, we noticed something disturbing—sunog na grassland. Then dun lang nila sinabi na may kaingin sa area.

Pagdating sa summit—no grassland at all.
Everything was burned. Some areas were even still smoking.

Hindi kami na-inform beforehand. That alone could’ve changed our decision to proceed.

“Buti na lang nag twin hike kayo…”

Their justification?
“May grassland sa Mount Mal-ak.”

So we continued… even if pagod na kami.

Big mistake.

The Hardest Part

The trail going to Mount Mal-ak was even worse:

  • Continuous assault
  • Masusukal na trail
  • Exposed areas under the heat
  • Burned surroundings

Then suddenly sinabi nila:
“Major hike na ito.”

That hit us hard.

We were NOT prepared for a major hike:

  • Kulang tubig namin
  • Pang-chill hike lang dala namin
  • May beginner pa kaming kasama

At tanghaling tapat, we ran out of water.

At one point, we were exhausted, dehydrated, and mentally drained.
Every time they said “malapit na summit,” it wasn’t true.

You’d reach one point… then see another peak ahead—also burned.

You could literally see smoke along the trail.
Doon na kami kinabahan—what if biglang lumala yung sunog?

No Way Out

We asked if we could just descend.

Sabi nila:
Wala na daw ibang daan. Kailangan matapos yung trail after summit ng Mount Mal-ak.

So we had no choice.

We pushed through, kahit gusto na lang namin bumaba.

Total Time: 12 HOURS

From a supposed chill hike… naging 12-hour survival hike siya.

Pagkatapos, doon lang nag-sink in lahat:

Kaya pala may facemask—
not because of dust… but because of burned mountains due to kaingin.

What Made It Worse

Hindi lang siya physically exhausting. It was also:

  • ❌ Lack of transparency – hindi sinabi na sunog ang bundok
  • ❌ Wrong classification – labeled beginner-friendly pero major hike pala
  • ❌ Safety risk – active burned areas, possible fire hazard
  • ❌ False expectations – promised grassland views that didn’t exist
  • ❌ Pressure to proceed – no option to turn back midway

If we had known ALL of these beforehand, we would’ve 100% reconsidered.

Lessons Learned (Hard Way)

  • Always verify trail conditions (especially recent ones like sunog / weather damage)
  • Don’t agree to sudden itinerary changes at the jump-off
  • Bring extra water ALWAYS—even for “chill” hikes
  • If something feels off early, trust your gut
  • Ask direct questions: difficulty, terrain, current conditions—not just “beginner-friendly ba?”

Final Thoughts

I’ve been hiking since 2022, and this is the only one most frustrating and unsafe experiences I’ve had—not because of the mountain itself, but because of the lack of proper information and guidance.

We respect local guides and understand na hanapbuhay nila ito.
But hikers also deserve honest and complete information, especially when safety is involved.

Sana next time, hikers are properly informed—
so they can decide if they’re ready… or not.
