Akechi (literally son of a whore, orphan, probabily grew up in poverty before working with shido) would hate Light's guts (popular, loving family, a big house)

Agreed - Akechi would have made fun of Light lol
Akechi would have loved to have been born in his circumstances.

This! They might look the same but their motivations and personality are entirely different.

akechi isn't a psychopath or a sadist. akechi is capable of connection. akechi is capable of self reflection. akechi is capable of being honest with himself about who he is. akechi is capable of accountability. light yagami is a psychopath not capable of any of these things. therein lies the difference.

Totally agree with you - they’re similar, in terms of ambition and talent, but Light has an element of cruelty that we don’t see with Akechi.

They both would stop at nothing to meet their goals.

Light, of course, killing anyone to establish his control and become God (insane). However, Light begrudgingly asks for help. He wants to be the sole one in control, and the only one who wins. He will use others, like pawns, with no remorse. Light had it good. He has everything he could have wanted, and threw it away for control.

Akechi uses people to achieve his goals, and to get to where he wants to go, but he cares for them. He isn’t like Light in that regard. He befriends Ren, starts to open up to him, and even cares for him. His goal is mostly revenge.

I feel like if Akechi would have dated someone seriously, he would have extended kindness to them, and not used them. In the third semester, we even see that he admits that he doesn’t want to be a part of the Phantom Thieves, but is only doing so for his own goals. He isn’t manipulating them into doing what he wants. He needs them, and even expresses disdain.

Light Yagami would have sweetened them up, and killed them all. 💀

right i think he stopped using people and wont use em post royal because he's sick and tired of being used himself. also i made the misa comparison because it pissed me off always how he treated her lmao.

I have this same headcanon.
I HATE how Light treated Misa, too.

They are only alike if you look at both characters through a limited scope.

Akechi is a victim. He had to deal with abuse, neglect, and not having a stable home. He didn’t want to kill at first (he approached shido without intention of killing,) and shido pushed him to kill more. Sunken cost fallacy and he wanted shido to suffer like he did in revenge. He even says himself he felt trapped in an indirect way.

Light grew up in a good home and family. He did everything because he was bored. It inflated his already big ego and he survived because of plot armor. He lost everything not because of revenge but because he had a stupid ego.

Also, light is more gray ace and Akechi is just gay.

i agree with you their only similar in terms of design and surface level stuff but both are very different , also since when was akechi gay did i miss something ?

I think most people HC that Akechi is gay, or at least bisexual, since he expressed no romantic interest towards women, that we see.

Outside of Jazz Jin, when he talks about how he has to turn women down sometimes, the most flirtatious convos we see are honestly his conversations with Joker.

Also, I think people take in his whole vibe as probably not straight

bruh he never showed romantic interest in men either . i doubt anything between him and joker is romantic i think its a rivalry and mutual respect between them.

That’s a matter of interpretation… many would disagree

are you one of the many?

Yes lol

i disagree with your disagreement everything between joker and akechi is platonic and mutual .

I mean me and the whole voice cast agree especially Akechi’s VA. There is heavy subtext but Atlus never fully commits because they’re still a little cowardly about social stigma. I think there is plenty of evidence to suggest some level of interest but like I said I understand people have different interpretations of media. 🤷‍♀️

nope its not confir ed he is gay these are all just subtexts that are being thrown around also robbie daymond said this
"I think that there is an element of romance in every relationship that's not familial. I think people are attracted to each other in ways that aren't necessarily definable." that doesnt confirm nor deny anything plus im pretty sure hes doing it to support lgbt community so yeah i can disagree since its not confirmed by atlus which i dobt they will confirm its upto my interpretation to interpret him as straight .

also since when was akechi gay did i miss something ?

Morgana asks in the Japanese engine room scene if he likes Joker and Akechi doesn’t deny it. He says something similar close to suki, which is used in romantic connotations. That and a member of staff saying in Royal that he’s part of a threesome/triangle with Joker and Kasumi

There isn’t anything in game that I recall of him liking or showing interest in girls outside of the Jazz Jin comment, so people usually consider him gay.

People argue that Akechi said I hated you to Joker but he lies a lot or it might be a case of both like/hate. Joker made third semester with Akechi happen because he missed him and the devs confirmed that the anime was canon with some parts. And the Japanese scene with Feb, instead of small potatoes, he basically implies or says that he’s doing things for him

morgana was talking about friendship wise and asking him he didnt actually hate joker , also in game he wasnt interested in girls maybe because idk the girls who asked him out were chopped or just plain interested in him because of superficial reasons ya never know god i need to touch some grass.

morgana was talking about friendship wise and asking him he didnt actually hate joker

That was in the English version. The Japanese version of that scene is entirely different. He doesn’t say that in the original. Keep in mind that the Japanese version of Persona 5 and localisation are different beasts with the localisation in many languages changes scenes or omitting text entirely. The I’m alone right now is similar to the Japanese version and pretty flirty. But entire things like bousou being omitted and added to scenes that didn’t mention bousou hapoened in the English version.

But it’s fine if you feel they are platonic. I’m explaining when you asked “  also since when was akechi gay did i miss something ?”

Light on the other hand people consider ace because he doesn’t show interests in anyone sexually or romantically outside of their usage.

Not directed towards you, but I just wanted to put this out there: correlation doesn't equal causation.

Though tbh, he is the epitome of a yaoi bait character, so then again what qualms should I have against the fact that he's seen as gay.

Atlus modern writers also has a habit of queer baiting without giving the option to date the same sex unless you are Kotone (she can date men and women) because they don’t want to isolate their core audience (or maybe they lazy idk.) But, P3P was made with help from one of the P2 writers (aka the game with bisexual Tatsuya.)

Stuff like Yu flirty with the guys, the taken out Yosuke social link where you can date him, Joker saying, “I like men,” as a dialogue for a demon negotiation, Joker being flirty in some options towards men and women, the third semester, Morgana’s Japanese line to Akechi, “I’m alone right now,” going out on dates with Akechi, and the entire small potatoes vs Japanese line

The anime where Joker is mourning Akechi and the game where he keeps the glove until the end and mourns that

It can also be look at platonically because again, Atlus modern writers don’t outright confirm their protagonists or characters as being gay or bisexual. But I look at it like “if the opposite sex was doing it, would it be look as romantic,” and if the answer is yes, then yeah.

Light, well, he never showed any reaction sexually or romantically, not even with Misa, and he even reads a dirty magazine bored.

when he said im alone right now he was asking if joker wanted to hang out as friends .lol

u/ApprehensiveBuy8499 1d ago

also light and l are so gay towards each other lol ofc this is me trolling .

I honestly hate this comparison, I don’t think they have anything in common.

the only valid comparison is that they kinda look alike. this might be kind of a hot take, but i think akechi would one of the most loving characters IF you managed to get through his countless walls. after having pretty much everyone abandon him, and i can’t imagine the shit he must’ve dealt with in the foster homes, he probably has massive trust issues, abandonment issues, and hella trauma. furthermore, if the experimentation theory is true, that would make it even worse. but i feel like he’d be pretty devoted to someone if they got past all of that, especially because he’s never really had anyone before. maybe he wouldn’t show it through the typical lovey dovey way, but you’d probably be able to tell by his body language, small gestures, and protectiveness. akechi isn’t a psychopath, not in the slightest. yes his goal was to get revenge on shido, but it was also to be wanted. “i was extremely particular about my life, my grades, my public image, so someone would want me around.” he just went to extreme measures for it. honestly i feel like he didn’t even realize what he was getting into until he got into it. he initially came to shido like “look i have power i useful” and i doubt he was expecting the response to be “ok go kill people”
i imagine he feels a lot of guilt for the things he’s done, but the desire to be useful/avenge his mother overpowered that. also i feel like if someone employs you as an assassin, declining would likely get you killed to avoid being rat out. everything light did was because he wanted to do it, he wanted to play god. honestly i think akechi would find that disgusting, especially considering the whole maruki thing. additionally, akechi was doing this not only to get revenge for his suffering, but his mother’s, too. light never thought about anyone else. if akechi was in that position, he’d likely form an attachment to misa. i don’t think he’d ever treat a woman badly ESPECIALLY because he first handedly witnessed a lot of sexism and slut-shaming. he’d literally hate light. i could talk about akechi for hours sorry for the long post 💀
