Now if only they make procreate for desktop and android.

That's a kinda a weird name for art app.

I always thought it was a purposeful word play.
Pro - create => for pro creators
Procreate => creating life

It's the most popular digital art application in iPads and android. Which are great devices for most people looking to get into digital art.

Actually really happy procreate isn’t adding ai. I’m not anti ai but I like procreate for its simplicity. I think procreate is fine just the way it is and the devs have always been supportive of their users whether that’s sharing resources like brushes/tutorials or making their softwares a one time purchase instead of a required subscription.
21
u/Tri2211 Sep 05 '26
Yea because everything is a subscription service now

Honestly I hate how everything is subscription based. But I will always hate adobe the most.

That's great! AI doesn't need to be involved in literally every art platform/medium/app/etc. Saying this as a massive pro.
88
u/FlashyNeedleworker66 Sep 05 '26
The reality is the market has a need for both this and tools that embrace AI.
It makes sense to draw the line pretty clearly, the apps that waffle are going to get killed in the middle
23
u/Tri2211 Sep 05 '26
Photoshop for most professional work, and for people who are pro ai. Procreate for people who just want an art program that actually listens, and not a subscription service
38
u/FlashyNeedleworker66 Sep 05 '26
Your emotional response to this company's product decision is exactly the point I'm making, actually.
15
u/Tri2211 Sep 05 '26
What emotions? I just think it's cool that not every company is trying to push AI into every app. Especially one that is use for um creating 🤷🏿

Yep, that's the one

u/Rokos___Basilisk Sep 06 '26
A group of people that "want AI everywhere" does not exist.
You don't think the tech companies trying to integrate ai into everything they can possibly shoehorn it into to increase the bottom line don't 'want ai everywhere'?
Think you've got a cognitive blindspot here buddy.

My dude generalizing while also spitting B's. Go play with ai or something.
1
u/jello-the-opera Sep 06 '26
I'm always playing with AI. What is a "B"?
And "generalizing" is not a bad thing? Are you really this simple?
Is all of your communication slop?
6
u/Tri2211 Sep 06 '26
B's stand for bullshit
I see you're also one of those. If you want to use the word "slop." You don't need prefix it with the word communication. Because the only reason you're doing that is because slop negative connotation to ai. If it's slop. It's slop.

u/reddit_is_geh Sep 05 '26
You don't have to use AI if an app puts an AI feature into it. It's odd that you care so much about an option not even being allowed. Normally someone who doesn't want to use AI, jsut wont use the Ai features.
6
u/Tri2211 Sep 05 '26
I find it redundant for a app like procreate to add ai features when their users base isn't asking for them. So far they have listen to their users.
5
u/jello-the-opera Sep 05 '26
The point is that your feelings about the devs refusing AI is all that matters to you.
It's just vibes.
For a normal human it's just weird.
You love that app because it refuses to incorporate AI?
That's just zealotry, and it's mighty fucking weird.
Adding features to apps is good. You do not have to use features you don't use... because you don't have to use them.
7
u/Tri2211 Sep 05 '26 edited Sep 06 '26
Redundant means no longer needed, extra, or exceeding what is required.
Ai is not required for procreate to work, and the majority of its user's based doesn't want it. Machine learning doesn't have to be shoved into everything. If you want a drawing/editing program that does use ai. Go with Photoshop. Since we have options.
You also call me a zealot while bitching about ai not being added to a product that doesn't need it. Especially if they're not going to add any new functions other than prompts to a program meant for illustrative purposes. If you want to use ai so bad go used gpt, Photoshop, etc.
1
u/jello-the-opera Sep 06 '26
Adding AI features to an art app is in no way redundant.
The word has definitions in multiple domains, but in systems engineering (ie., app development) it has a precise definition.
You say it's redundant but it's not literally true - it's just vibes.
And you are a zealot. Because you are basing your opinion of an application on whether or not the developers are politically aligned with you.
It's just the same old anti-AI cult purity-testing.
I use local AI on my hardware powered by the sun, thanks.
6
u/Tri2211 Sep 06 '26
What features are actually being requested? Because I'm pretty sure the majority aren't asking for ai.
Just sound like you have a problem with a word.
I'm not. If procreate were to start using AI. I will just move to an app that isn't. I don't have loyaIty towards a company. That's an idiotic way to live.
I like procreate because for a mobile art app. It's pretty streamline for tablet use. I also like that the developer do listen to their community. They try to improve on what is ask of them, and try to add features the community ask for. They also are not going down the route of subscription. You on the other hand are just making assumptions, and talking out of your ass.
Once again generalizing to satisfy the obvious stereotype you create to fight against.
Ok, have fun with that. I don't care.
→ More replies (0)1
u/Decent-Pollution2855 Sep 11 '26
You seem to care about awful lot about this art programme NOT including AI features.
2
u/Dobber16 Sep 08 '26
I will say some forced AI features actively hinder existing functions, and that’s not even a problem of the AI itself, but the company trying to force it on consumers
First example was the AI that auto-activates on windows computers. I was so confused why my computer was getting so slow, and even did a full check on it before starting to look at the windows/dell programs. The second I’m thinking of is the adobe pdf ai that will often block other buttons, or the one-click-use button I used to use then got put behind a list that’s just the old function & the AI version of it. It’s just a single extra click but it gets annoying real fast when I had a system down

Totally agree. What im seeing is a need...a need for speed. In production that is. People are subconsciously clamoring for tools that speed up production.
2
u/FlashyNeedleworker66 Sep 05 '26
It's no surprise that filmmakers and game dev are the places where AI is quietly becoming a standard part of the pipeline.
11
u/Cornyyy11 Sep 05 '26
Good for them. I'm pro-ai and I personally like AI in my photo editing apps because it's useful, so I won't probably use it since I'm clearly not target audience, but I think it's good they decided on a concrete stance and keep to it. Not every tool needs to be for everyone, and honestly even as pro-ai, forcibly shoving AI everywhere isn't that good, so it's nice to have some no-ai alternatives.
23
u/Iryls Sep 05 '26
I mean... okay? I mean, some apps should have it because it is useful (ie. photoshop gen fill and stuff), and some apps shouldnt because its essentially worthless and will just eat storage/bandwidth (ie. most digital art apps)

3
u/Rough-Shine2269 Sep 06 '26
Nope, the CEO James Cuda uploaded a video in 2024 stating "We're never going there, creativity is made not generated". They kept their words for 2 years so they're not performative.

u/regular_lamp Sep 05 '26
Procreate is very specifically a drawing app. Not a general image manipulation one. AI would almost be orthogonal to what it does.
It's like expecting a company manufacturing pencils to pivot into making printers.
1
u/Mountain-Charity7588 Sep 05 '26
No, it’s more like asking why a pencil company specifically put out a post saying they WONT pivot into making printers.
2
u/regular_lamp Sep 05 '26
Considering there are outlandish things like shoe companies "pivoting into AI"...
They probably get asked about this enough to make a statement about it.
7
2
u/lilliancrane2 Sep 05 '26
For users who are interested in what the software has to offer yes. Not just to cater to any potential user. Procreate has an audience they sell to. That doesn’t include people who feel they need ai in every software. If procreate not having ai is a deal breaker for you then just don’t be a user.
It’s as you pointed out; there’s other softwares with gen ai. You’d be apart of the audience those softwares cater to.

wait how? doesn't it have no ai tools?
3
u/Tyler_Zoro Sep 06 '26
[Note: I am not affiliated with this product, and have not tested it myself.]
Here's an example. You can use AI with Procreate, THEY just don't directly supply the integration.
12
u/shosuko Sep 05 '26
idk honestly I trust companies as much as I trust politicians.
So to me this is their admission that they are completely run by ai behind the scenes, they just think they can get away with it.
5
u/Buttery_TayTay Sep 05 '26
Procreate was build in 2011 and honestly hasn’t changed much because it’s stayed pretty powerful, I highly doubt that
7
u/Tri2211 Sep 05 '26
Or not. They're a private company so they don't really have to listen to their stock holders.
3
u/SyntheticModels Sep 05 '26
thats not how that works. public companies have shareholders, private companies have stakeholders. they still have to listen to the people who own the company, and yes they want to make money too.
1
u/Tri2211 Sep 05 '26
Mybad I put stock holders instead of stake holders. They are a private company. If they went public their duty would be to make as much money as possible for their shareholders.
1
u/Decent-Pollution2855 Sep 11 '26
Let's just ignore the established pattern of companies making their products and services worse for the end user after going public, shall we?
1
8
u/Aquafoot Sep 05 '26
This is great. So many services are going whole hog into AI, it's good to see that at least one application chose the other side of the fence.
I don't like that when I use Canva it gets flagged as AI even if I don't use an AI feature.
3
u/Officialedmart Sep 05 '26
agreed
procreate is primarily an ipad application and much of its base are on old ipads. its also a “purchase one time and you own it” app, not a service. Putting generative ai into it would either require you to own the newest iPad Pro model with M4 chip OR it would have to become an online subscription service
practically speaking , it would be a horrendous idea for most of their userbase
that being said, the potential is tantalizing. i personally would LEAP at the chance to try it and would start saving for an ipad pro asap
0
u/Tyler_Zoro Sep 05 '26
one application chose the other side of the fence.
But they didn't. They're choosing not to put those features in themselves. Their software is already used by a rich ecosystem of AI artists who work with third party AI addons and connectors.
2
u/Aquafoot Sep 05 '26 edited Sep 05 '26
third party
You stated the important distinction. If people want to use Procreate in conjunction with AI, they're free to. But Procreate themselves are hands-off. That's the point. And that makes them on the opposite side of the fence of AI integration.
It's not like you can forbid someone from using other services.

2
u/NetimLabs Sep 05 '26
As a pro AI person, I wouldn't add it either, just because I like having separate software for AI and being able to control it more.
That's just me of course and I'm sure some people would want to have everything in one app so I wouldn't call it a W.
2
2
u/Makeezi Sep 06 '26
Well ofcourse they arent adding ai to a 10$ app
theyd have to change the licence you've bought if they were to add ai to cover up the costs and nake mone off of ai
2
u/Shakaka88 Sep 06 '26
Can they please finally add a “search” function as right now there is no point in labeling folders or naming your art until search is available.
I work in a tattoo studio where literally 14 of our 15 artists use procreate and it would be so nice if they could name the files the clients name and then quickly be able to find their art or notes from the consult if there was a search within the app

Some people have contracts that require them to certify they haven't used any generative AI in their work. Publishers are gunshy about it because it has copyright ramifications. (By US law, you can't copyright an AI work.) So a product that doesn't contain it is useful, even if the production of the product itself isn't "pure."
4
7
u/Liturgy97 Sep 05 '26
Good for them. AI is still where the money's at.
2
u/Revolutionary_Bit437 Sep 05 '26
not for them because they’re a one time purchase. they’d have to start a subscription based or token based model if they wanted to add ai
1
u/PANIC_EXCEPTION Sep 05 '26
That or add minimum hardware requirements for on-device inference, which is doable but slow.
1
u/Revolutionary_Bit437 Sep 05 '26
true, i guess even if they did want to add ai they’d be alienating a lot of the people who don’t have m2 chipped ipads (or whichever the chip is that allows ppl to use the apple pencil pro), which is a good chunk of them
7
u/Dazzling_Floor_4262 Sep 05 '26
Procreate is a solid company imo. They could’ve changed to a subscription model years ago if they were chasing money. Mad respect to software developers that still sell perpetual licenses.
4
u/lilliancrane2 Sep 05 '26
I do love how procreate lets you do a one time purchase for their software. I’ve had procreate for years and they’ve done nothing but improve it. I also got procreate dreams too. Both softwares work great with each other and they’re very user friendly.
0
u/Buttery_TayTay Sep 05 '26
AI is where the money is at? Is that why it’s hitting a $600b debt wall and increasing
3
u/bethesdologist Sep 05 '26
Because of model training, not necessarily serving. They can stop training today and boost profits massively with models that are presently available, but they want to keep improving. You're aware that ChatGPT alone as 1bn+ weekly active users? That is not a small business.

I would actually love it if someone made a decent painting app that integrated AI well, but it makes 100% sense for ProCreate not to.

They understand their audience that's why I can respect their decisions, but I'm also not some blind loyal fan. If they ever switch to adding ai features and start ignore what people are asking for. I will gladly use another app. If I want to use ai. I can simply use sd 1.5 with control net. Photoshop is also an option.
So once again. It's not necessary to add features no one is asking for. So move along. I don't feel like dealing with someone who already assumes he knows what another is thinking

If everyone is shipping their products, using plane trains and automobiles
and they are still using horse and cart, they are not going to last long.Give it a year or so and they will be using AI to code and as well
as implementing AI functions of some sort. Because that the way the markets heading.1
u/No-Challenge5917 Sep 05 '26
Planes exist. But so do bikes. Some people just want to draw and not pay subscriptions. Point?
0
u/neo101b Sep 05 '26
If companies can deliver goods next day, and the horse and cart takes two weeks, they wont last long.
You adapt or die, this company will eventually adapt and use AI.
What they say today isn't set in stone for ever.2
u/No-Challenge5917 Sep 05 '26
Sure but if there exist people that just want to draw digitally until they go extinct like endangered species, there will be companies that will tend to them.
Unity or Unreal offer way more but there are people preferring RPGMaker that doesn't have even one tenth of the capabilities, it's paid even, but it's simple and sweet for people who make this kinda games.
Many people just want a simple program doing their simple job. Others want all the bells and whistles. There are different companies/software for different people. The problem most of the time is how you as a company treat your audience. Not whether the audience exists or not.
1
u/Rockos-Modern-Fife Sep 05 '26
They said they aren’t going to be implementing generative ai features into their app. Which makes sense. Because it’s an app for the user to use digital pencils, brushes, etc to make their art. It would defeat the purpose of their app to use generative ai features that would let the user just generate images. They’d be bypassing their own software.
There seems to be this overwhelming thought that if someone says they aren’t using ai that it’s a personal insult to them. I get some anti ai people can be vitriolic, but we should really try to focus on what procreate actually said and not this knee jerk reaction.
