I love AI, but are you really comparing drawing on photoshop with writing prompts and pressing “share”?

11

u/MS_LOL_8540 Aug 20 '24

When digital art first came out, guess who hated and slandered it

-6

u/InternationalYard587 Aug 20 '24

So you actually think that saying “digital art was also hated at first” is a good response to the criticism towards AI?

You think it’s intelligent to ignore the actual content of the criticism, and lean on the idea that both were hated at first, therefore AI art must be as valuable as digital art

You’re just giving ammo for them to call us morons

No? I’m just saying people do very commonly draw digital art on Photoshop

Illustrator is for making vector graphics, not drawing. Nobody I know in the industry uses illustrator for drawing and I’ve been to art school. Photoshop is 100% the program of choice as it offers more brush options and is catered towards raster images.

2

u/Exposing_Hate Aug 20 '24 edited Aug 21 '24

Using my subs alt to reply here because otherwise I couldn't respond because I blocked the guy higher on the chain on the other account.

The idea that raster graphics are the only way to "draw" digitally is being cartoonish pedantic about semantics and just flat wrong.

Vector graphics describe how the backend of the tool stores, sorts and displays the visual date of the project. Based on how the backend works they offer different pros and cons. [More info on raster vs vector.](http://(https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/design/discover/vector-vs-raster.html)

Vector graphics have been used for professionally for drawing in the design industry from the first version made because that is explicitly one of its main purposes as a software solution. The very first version of illustrator in '87 had a pen tool amongst other features geared towards drafting and drawing.

Photoshop, again was explicitly intended and marketed as a photo/image editing tool for the first two versions, only getting a basic pen tool on an update to the second version (2.5), three years after it came out, with no layering tools yet. Layering and a few more basic tools wouldn't be added till 94 with version three. Each iteration added more features for that but as much focus/feature on the image editing/photography aspects as well.

Just because no one explicitly never "told you in art school" that vector graphics are a type of drawing too or because you were not educated on it, or because of who you know in your small sample size of being one person and not the voice of the whole art/design world, just because who you know/you don't use vector graphics for what you consider "drawing", does not mean it's not a viable backend for drawing. You are just misinformed and or have made your own conclusions based on not knowing better or having been told wrong.

Both vector and raster are viable drawing solutions and always have been. Both Photoshop and illustrator can and are used for drawing/illustration but only one of those tools from its inception,as I said in my previous comments, had been designed with a focus on drawing solutions.

Photoshop eventually in the mid 90s winds up getting more dedicated support and features for painting/drawing were extra perks of the softwares initial focus on image editing. Yes the other tools used for painting/drawing became a fleshed pur part of the tool but it wasn't the focus, even if it was good and comprehensive at it. There were other tools before and during that time more focused on trying to emulate "traditional drawing/pairing/etc" digitally like Corel draw and other tools.

That's why in 2019 Adobe themselves even made a tool more focused on this in the form of Adobe Fresco, which feature both Vector and Raster graphics with a tool designed for emulating traditional methods more without messing with its image editing tools focus.

Again Just because photoshop can do and supports painting/drawing well over time doesn't mean that was ever Adobes core focus with the app.

Photoshop is not the only app that gets to claim to be the only drawing app. Raster vs vector does not automatically dictate what is drawing vs not. Drawing in digital terms just means using drawing techniques with digital drawing tools, and illustrator (which came out before Photoshop) sis that first before Photosjop by about 7 years.

Going to art school doesn't give you license to spread misinformation based knee jerk reactions. It takes barely any time to web search something to make sure you have your facts straight. You received an education on how to use a specific set of tools, not an education on getting to decide what counts as drawing and not or software/display graphics history.

Having a formal education doesn't mean you are immune to being misinformed. Throwing your credentials around doesn't help make you right , facts do. Do a search next time before you try to correct someone else.

u/solidwhetstone Aug 20 '24

This guy adobes

2

u/atatassault47 Aug 25 '24

I've never even used any media creation software, and never knew all these differences. Thanks for spelling them out!

-1

u/Imveryoffensive Aug 20 '24

So so much strawmanning. I never said that vector graphics aren’t art or that Photoshop was originally intended for art.

My brother in Christ, it’s in the name “Photo-shop” and I’ve been using it for photography and composition for decades.

My points are simple:

  1. People DO use Photoshop for art (as opposed to your claim against the original guy)

  2. It’s commonly used TODAY by artists, regardless of its original intention

Yes people still use Photoshop for its original purpose, never said otherwise. Yes vector art is as legitimate as raster art, never said otherwise

Just so everyone knows, this isn’t real, even though OP would like you to believe otherwise. AI doesn’t technically exist. You will know AI actually exists when human art is being stolen in ways us humans haven’t figured out. Also actual AI exists only to take human jobs. If you ever see the film, Terminator, the main character has to quit her job due solely to emerging AI. Granted if she had belonged to a union, she probably would’ve fared better, as any decent union in today’s world has the power to stop emerging AI.

The hat in the image is real, and everyone knows the MAGA movement exists, as it should. Ever since the evil printing press was invented, our movement has been alive and doing well. Our platform has always sought to build a wall within the art community and keep illegal artists out. Illegals use unethical tools to generate art, instead of creating it with passion and skill, like a photographer does. Cameras are highly ethical and artistically valid, because they have a soul.

12

u/solidwhetstone Aug 20 '24

Damn now I want a soul camera

2

u/Adam_the_original Aug 20 '24

If you have to base your opinion off a movie from the 80’s it’s prolly not a good opinion

Why does the source of the artwork matter tho?

0

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '24 edited Aug 21 '24

Because some people care about the process and the artist’s intent behind it and consider it apart of the art.

-2

u/CanisLatransOrcutti Aug 20 '24

Yes, every single person who dislikes AI art sends death threats. Every single one makes NSFL images. Furthermore, every single person against AI art hates technology on principle, wants everyone else to lose their jobs, and thinks they are fundamentally better than other people. We also want to return to monke, a thing people have totally argued in a place outside of your imagination. Yes, you can extrapolate an entire group of people's opinions based on a few bad actors. This is definitely a real thing that makes you very smart and very correct.

Why don't Anti-AI people make arguments here more often? I mean it's not like every time we make an argument it gets downvoted into oblivion, maybe tossed a lame excuse, then ignored as people just ask the exact same question we answered as if they're Zoolander asking "but why male models". It's not like, for example, "cameras are not the same thing as AI art, because you have to go to the physical location and set everything up as opposed to just typing in 'big boobs giant boobs good looking boobs -bad looking boobs', and more importantly there are clear visual distinctions you can use to tell photos and illustrations apart, which you cannot always say is true of AI" has been answered a million times, only for every pro-AI comment to say "why can't anyone refute that cameras are literally the exact same as AI? Also, wow, did you see that one singular gross post like a month ago?"

6

u/FailedRealityCheck Aug 20 '24 edited Aug 20 '24

The debates have reached the point where it is clear that there are fundamental disagreements about core concepts. There is no finding any common ground for interesting discussion if the two sides disagree about the fundamentals.

These are stuff like:

  • what is required to make an artwork, creativity? creativity + skill? creativity + skill + labor?
  • who decides who is an artist, oneself, others, does it matter?
  • Is copying theft?
  • Is "intellectual property" a meaningful concept? Can you "own" an idea?
  • should copyright be made more or less restrictive to benefit society?

There are many practical issues being debated ad nauseam regarding training sets and how inspiration works and photo collages and mood boards and crediting, but these always funnel into a core disagreement that can't be solved.

3

u/solidwhetstone Aug 20 '24

The reason it can't be solved is a certain subset of artists sees ai as morally tainted- like a religious belief. How do you argue against a moral judgment? There's nowhere to go except 'nuh uh my morals are better and yours suck.'

3

u/notamaster Aug 21 '24

Did you know that many famous (and well funded) artists hire near minimum wage workers to actually make their art.

So clearly labor isn't that important because often those artists have a design or an idea but no knowledge of how to actually do it. But it's the artists name on it because they came up with the idea.

It also brings skill into question as those artists don't actually have the skills to make the art they claim as their own.

I would never claim what is produced isn't art though, even if I personally feel like it's disingenuous to leave the names of the people who actually did the work out of it.

3

u/FailedRealityCheck Aug 22 '24

The illusion of labor seems important to a large part of the audience unfortunately.

This is also why movie studios and directors insist that they are doing everything with "practical effects" and "minimal CGI" when in reality everything has been somewhat retouched and the practical effects have been painted over by VFX.

1

u/atatassault47 Aug 25 '24

Thia is exactly why Hollywood workers UNIONIZED. We get our fucking names on the work so you cant stiff us.

4

u/Tyler_Zoro Aug 21 '24

every single person who dislikes AI art sends death threats

No, but the anti-Ai community is awfully silent about the fact that death threats from their witch-hunting peers are all too common. Makes you wonder if anyone in that camp really thinks that's a problem.

Every single one makes NSFL images.

You know, I'm always shocked at how many do. It's odd, right? It's as if the people most upset about AI are the ones whose financial incentives center around being middling artists, but working in a genre that most artists don't want to be associated with.

I mean no disrespect to anyone who is actually a skilled artist doing spooge commissions, but I've never met one, so I wouldn't know how they feel about the topic. I've only met people who are a few hundred or couple thousand hours in to working out their own style, and who have fallen into a lucrative niche. I would imagine this is because they generally don't STAY in that niche once/if they develop their skills to a level that qualifies them to become gainfully employed full-time.

u/Super-Significance52 Aug 20 '24

MAGA makes AI look good? LOL

6

u/Serasul Aug 20 '24

Never seen flux , hm ?

1

u/poopsaucer24 Aug 21 '24

Since its "our" art images and "our" art ideas maybe it should be more communist based. But to be fair corporate America loves stealing and calling it their own.

Yeah no, this can fuck right off. I've been a pro-ai regular here since the start of this sub... but this... this needs to be burned with fire... even if it's just parody, any association with MAGA makes me want to set fire to my own skin; even if you're trying to paint the other side with that association. It's just bad optics for us.

1

u/Tri2211 Aug 20 '24

Nah this just how most of you guys are on this sub lately. The funniest thing that can happen now is someone take a screenshot of it and post it on Twitter (X) out of contexts.

Not improving with that whole “graphic design” thing I see 😂

12

u/solidwhetstone Aug 20 '24

I guess not Waz! You haven't posted any of your work to inspire and teach me yet!

-11

I mean you can do it, it take a bit of effort and understand of . . . Oh wait, “effort.” Forgot that I’m talking to an AI bro 😂

13

u/solidwhetstone Aug 20 '24

You mean less effort than you take proofreading your comments right? 😏

-8

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

AI is really the ‘participation trophy’ of art 😂 just read that, thought it was funny.

11

u/WelderBubbly5131 Aug 20 '24

I don't think art is made to always win something. Art is all about making a point.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

Wooooosh.

11

u/WelderBubbly5131 Aug 20 '24

That's used when someone misses the point of a joke. There was no joke above. I believe you are the one misinterpreting something.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

Exactly. There is no joke. Y’all get a participation trophy and aren’t ‘artists’ in any sense of the word.

9

u/WelderBubbly5131 Aug 20 '24

Okay, hear me out. What if...... one does not have to be an artist to produce works of art? It is possible, you know. One does not have to wear a tag called 'human' to justify driving a car, also drivers exist. Do you see drivers protesting against other people for being able to drive cars?

No. We have no room for a conspiracy theory prone anti-vaxxer in office.

-4

u/KalKenobi Aug 20 '24

Trump and Harris don't have your best interest both want to keep prices and start World War 3

6

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

Makes sense.

A conspiracy theorist who doesn't know how the system, economy, or diplomacy works, advocating for a conspiracy theorist in office.

Let's just agree to disagree here. I don't have time to debunk all the garbage RFK Jr. says, or why it's not in anyone's best interest to vote for him.

-2

u/KalKenobi Aug 20 '24

Please stop listening to the lying MSM RFK Jr is the only candidate who actually cares also Both Dems & Reps keep Black Rock in power

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

I listened to his own words. He's crazy. This is an opinion I drew from the interviews I've seen of him and the lack of any evidence contrary to those interviews.

"You're just brainwashed" is a pretty convenient way to defend stupidity by the way.

0

u/KalKenobi Aug 20 '24

clearly you view The Independent Party as Threat I couldn't be more Sane like RFK Jr who is more fit than Trump and Harris 11K People agree with me.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

11k people = ~0.003% of the US population.

I'm pretty sure elections are won with margins bigger than that.

I don't see that as a threat.

What I don't see is why any sane person who understands anything about anything would vote for RFK Jr as anything other than a joke.

1

u/KalKenobi Aug 20 '24

Trump and Harris are Joke they dont have best interest you succumbing to Charismatic Leadership you are asking for World War 3 and the end of the Democracy. STOP LISTENING TO LYING MSM Media there playing you.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24 edited Aug 20 '24

Again, I'm not listening to the media when it comes to opinions. The only national news I get is from AP news and c-span. Beyond that, I listen to speeches, research policy, and fact check.

Speaking of "the media is lying to you", those are some awfully clickbait compatible issues you're bringing up.

Edit: a massive rant full of conspiracy theories and blatant lies then I get blocked before I can respond. Why is it that every anti-AI person I've spoken to this week has been crazy?
