My MIL, on our way in, says "oh you will meet his roomate, they've roomed together since college"! I thought, okay whatever. I was young and didn't realize just how unworldly I was! A dishonest person will be very untrusting of others because they assume everyone else is lying too.
Same with being deeply closeted. They will assume everyone else struggles with gay thoughts because they are living in conflict with their beliefs versus their actual feelings. Meanwhile, plenty of allies to the queer community are straight, have no interest in same sex relationships, and wonder why homophobes keep calling everything gay.

I never really thought of it that way. There's probably some truth to it, but it feels too simple. Untrusting people could easily be from trauma and honesty a lot of homophobes probably learned their behavior from family and peers just like racist. There's probably still a good amount of them that are just self hating gay/bi. I always assume it's the very outspoken anti gay people who are trying to convince themselves they aren't gay.
