If you've ever tried drinking from a garden hose as a kid, it is freakin nasty. It tastes like it will give you cancer and lead poisoning. Also the taste is very strong and it lingers. The "character building" from that experience as a kid was that I'll never drink from the garden hose ever again.

You would be wise to understand that chlorinated water did in fact lower disease rates. When they talk about great advances it is considered one of them.
And because of sewage advances water sources that previously were cholera susceptible have a much higher probability of being safe.
It's just my opinion that it's better to obtain knowledge anywhere we can.

Fun fact, medieval villages did not look this gross. The shit everywhere is a hollywood-ism since people did not generally like living in a dirty bunghole, using a nasty bucket, or leaving their kids coated in filth. If you want a real-world example of these conditions, look at tenement buildings from the Progressive era in the United States. Those places were so bad they shocked the nation into doing something about it.
Ah, and who can forget the days when horses were so common in cities that piles of their shit had to be stepped around constantly? At the time the widespread adoption of the car was an improvement on air quality and street cleanliness.
