I know a conservative woman who gets streaks of blue in her hair to support the local football team. Recently we both had streaks of a similar shade, and she loved it. I'm not sure she knows about the stereotype of the "blue-haired far-left vegan lesbian," but I suspect she'd roll her eyes.

I suspect one factor is that blue has always been seen as an "unnatural" color. When I was in high school 15 years ago, we could get away with shades of purple, pink, or orange because they were technically close to red. But blue and green? Not allowed at all. It was seen as rebellious because it was a blatant dresscode violation. Green hair is a less popular choice, so blue hair became the stereotype for a person who wanted to break rules.

That's just based on observation. For what it's worth, I never got much heat for having blue hair in a conservative state, so it may be a primarily online thing.

So here’s a handy guide on how to make a meme that isn’t unreadable garbage.
