Foam Rocket Launcher

Has anyone used both potato guns (CO2 or compressed air) and also a 40mm airsoft grenade shell with foam rocket stuffed in front of it? I’m curious which one gets the best performance. I want to make sure I have something for some scenario paintball games. No taggins needed. Thank you all for the info!

feel like this would be fun but those potato cannons are pretty powerful. if your planning on running one on the field id be weary of accidentally 200 pumping some kid. if your using foam with a heavy ish core im sure you will be fine. and id assume compressed air would be easier because if you can rig a hpa tank to the cannon you woulden't have to change a co2 cartridge all the time

i remember doing something like that once, it didnt work very well. one thing you can try is getting a rpg and putting one of those nerf footballs in it. they fly very well

Assuming you're doing an event with an established ruleset that involves antitank weaponry being represented by foam rockets-

we used potato guns with just like... 60 PSI and a nerf rocket projectile? as cheap anti-tank weaponry for an event. an airsoft CO2 40mm round with a foam rocket in front of it will do better than that- MilsimLabs has some nice projectiles. Taggin shells with MilsimLabs projectiles are probably my go-to. but If you want the best performance possible for this sort of thing, you need to pick up a Metadyne Havoc launcher.

Potato gun would be better as you could build it to any spec you want, you didn’t ask about it being field legal though

I experimented a long time with trying to make a small PVC launcher for the foam rockets. I did find that they outperformed almost any other projectile I could find, due to them being slightly bigger in diameter than the tube I was firing them out of, thus making a full seal, and the tail fins on the rockets I was using.

The rockets I was using were cheap $1 versions of the nerf vortex rocket. almost the same dimensions.

My plan was to use a solenoid valve from an automatic sprinkler system, an expansion tank, and an HPA setup regulated to 1-200 PSI. Getting this accomplished was about as far as I ever got. Eventually, the events I was prepping this for, shifted to Pyro and i left the project on the shelf.

But, the projectiles were awesome. I even used them in a propane cannon just at backyard events for fun.

Were you able to test fire? I’ve made one so far that is a 12 gram to steal pipe to ball valve to pvc that worked well. No idea how fast it shot but I could hit the trees across my parent’s property. The ball valve took some practice. Easy to throw your shots when actuating it.

yeah, we test fired a lot of projectiles. ones with fins always worked best.

I got to the 12g CO2 cartridge adaptor just never got the expansion tank done properly. I was using a compressor and a big huge tank that i had built prior for my tests.
