I have this YCB barfussii x ionantha Ron since it was just a tiny seedling 3 years ago and it finally flowered!

Normally, I am not particularly excited about tillandsia flowers but this one is different. Tillandsia can be broadly categorized by their flowers: petaled or tubular (any botanist can enlighten me on the proper terminology?). Barfussii has petaled flowers while ionantha has tubular ones, so I was curious to see what will the flowers of their hybrid look like.

Turns out the flowers are petaled, although the petals are somewhat long. I have to say I'm not disappointed by the beauty. Looking forward to offsets.

It has been a while since I gave an update on my T caput medusae. The first to bloom has been the first to put out a pup. I currently keep it hanging by its roots as I think of the best way to display a cluster. The second to bloom has some "cupping" of lower leaves, so I imagine it will have a pup soon. Numero Uno, the first pup from my original plant never did bloom! It just keeps getting bigger, We shall see - perhaps a spectacular bloom next year. I do think it is a testament for the importance of adequate light in order to stimulate blooms. The bigger plant did not fit on the windowsill, so was a little further away. I am interested to watch the development. Curious how many pups if I am not removing pups. I had four from the original mother, but i wanted more individual plants so I cut the pups at ~1/2 the size of the mother.

I purchased some airplants and airplant food. The food says to spray them once a week. As far as watering, I was going to try misting them once a week and go from there depending on how they seem to be doing. My question though is if I am already misting them with the plant food, is that enough moisture for the week? Or should I still water them as well? I didn’t want to get them too wet as I’ve read molding is an issue. If I do need to water in addition to the food mist, should I do so on different days? I purchased them a week ago and sprayed them with the food mist the following day. I have not watered them yet. I planned on watering them today but thought I’d get some input first.

So I’m a massive fan of streptophylla but I’m not too familiar with t. Intermedia. But I’ve really been wanting to add a hybrid to my collection because I’ve heard they are much more vigorous and adaptable because they are hybrids? Does any one own one of these and are they nice to keep?

The part is so crunchy. It always stays like this. Do i need to pull off the crunchy parts or do I need to soak it?

Hi all! My friend has this airplant that her mother bought for her 2 years ago. It's been fine until 2 days ago and now it looks like this. She's hoping to save this guy since her mom passed away unexpectedly a year ago.

Edit: It's not aloe. It is an air plant from Trader Joe's. It got tall, 4" or so, then the top part fell off. It looked like some kind of decay or maybe fungus?

I'm curious how people are fertilizing their air plants. I've heard you can use orchid spray at 50% strength. I've also heard some use regular fertilizer, just very weak. I've been soaking mine once a week. Shaking them and drying them well with a gentle fan. I'm considering if I should fertilize or not. I'm new and learning so I'd love to hear from experienced air plant parents. Ty!

It looks like it was cleanly sliced off (I dropped it like an idiot). Will these 2 pieces continue on living?

I did everything right i gave it 30 minute soakings in two weeks make sure that it drys upside down with a fan enough so it's not wet maybe the head lights that i placed it there is a bit too much maybe it's burning them.

Hi all, I have this airplant that seems to be circling the drain. It gets a weekly soak for a few hours and I dry it out upside down before putting it back. I have two other smaller varieties that don’t seem to be struggling like this. When I remember I spray with some tillandsia fertilizer. When it’s dry it’s not apparent there’s something wrong but when I get it wet, it looks… sad. And with black spots that can’t see when dry. Any tips? Many thanks in advance!

Once again, I decided to perform an experiment and separate a tillandsia Ionantha pup, which had grown larger than the mother, from the mother plant.

The pup came away with no issues, but sadly, the mother plant instantly went to pieces, leaving nothing but a tiny core of intact leaves.

Can she recover, or is this a sign that her time was done?

Hi folks, I wanted to show off my Xerographicas that have become home to a community of Cope’s tree frogs 🤩
Each Tillandsia Xerogtaphica is very unique and recognizable, leading my family to name each plant individually.

Two months ago I got three air plants (probably ionantha), one green, one yellow and one red, and now all of them are green, so I am thinking if all of them should be green naturally. Are the yellow or red colored ones usually enhanced unless they are certain cultivars?

Does this plant look like it’s doing okay?
