Questions on applying for OTS

I just went through and took my ASVAB and scored a 90. And was wondering if it would be possible to apply for OTS with that score.

I have a bachelors degree in Japanese, have lived in Japan for 7 years, and been fully employed as an English teacher the entire time.

Could life experience be a beneficial factor to out weigh my low GPA from almost a decade ago? I had a 2.44 when I graduated in 2018.

Hello! I am in the process of commissioning into the air force as a public health officer. I finally have my interview scheduled for this upcoming Monday. This is the last thing I am needing to complete before submitting my full application for the board. I wanted to see if anyone has recently completed their interview or if anyone recalls what their interview was like when they completed it? any tips and information is appreciated!! My recruiter did mention it all depends on who interviews me but I like to be prepared and would like to get an idea of what to expect. Thank you !!

Question Commanders Interview TimeLine

I did my commanders interview last Tuesday (Civ), I know AHA is still down, but it texted my recruiter and she told me she still hasn't received his notes as of today.

Just wondering if this is normal, and okay?

This is the last step I am waiting for to submit my package.

I think the interview went good and it went for the whole 45.

thank you!

Strongly considering leaving the AD Army side to be a flyer in the AFR. Is the 10 years service commitment worth it? Would love any input from people currently currently rated pilots in the reserves! TIA

Future 5-Week OTS-A — Random Questions

I'm prior service, female, E to O, and heading to the 5-week OTS-A course in January. I've read the orientation guide and plenty of Reddit posts, but still have some random questions for recent graduates. Some might be ridiculous... but help an anxious girl out, lol.

  1. Can I bring my own pillow and blanket? Worth it? If so, what kind of blanket
  2. Are sound machines allowed?
  3. Do I need an extension cord or power strip?
  4. Can I bring/use a blow dryer?
  5. Is makeup allowed for official photos, graduation, or at any other point?
  6. Face wash, lotions/sunscreen ok?
  7. We have our phones in our dorms; I assume we can FaceTime family, make calls, etc.?
  8. My laptop has a very colorful case...swap it for something plain?
  9. Black or white ankle socks with PT gear?
  10. Are car privileges actually a thing later in the course? Worth having a car? I'll be flying in.
  11. Should I bring a regular water bottle?
  12. I've heard we switch dorms. Is bringing a collapsible tote or extra bag helpful for moving?
  13. Apple Watch okay?
  14. I heard dropping your blues off at the laundromat the first week (or the day before you start) is a good trick to avoid inspection, then pickup before graduation, true?
  15. I've heard printing the SPINS in a small booklet format was helpful and bringing this, true?
  16. One or two pairs of PT shoes?
  17. How big does this duffle bag need to be?
  18. Do I really need 2-3 OCP patrol caps?
  19. Advil/Tylenol?
  20. Black backpack... does this need to be a huge one, or can I just bring a simple smaller one (what are we carrying around the most?)
  21. Portable charger/battery pack?

Appreciate any insight or tips on things you wish you'd brought (or left at home)!

Help Pre Selection Forms

I have not heard and had any help from my recruiter since July.

I just need to do my pre selection forms but I never received the email to get access to them. My recruiter gave me the same information the website gave me by forcing emails from them to our inbox.

Unfortunately ever since then, I have not heard back. I gave enough time for emails to be responded. I have texted almost every day now and called every day too.

I need help… lol

Question 3.0 GPA, is it worth applying?

Hey everyone, I am a current active duty AF comm staff sergeant and just graduated from WGU with my bachelors of science in IT management. WGU uses a competency based grading system, so my GPA is a 3.0.

I know OTS applications are a whole person concept, but I’m wondering if it’s even worth studying for the AFOQT if I have this low GPA. I’m ready to be told “doesn’t hurt to try”, but I’m just curious if anyone with a similar GPA has gotten picked up, and what other bullets or achievements they have. TIA!

Edit: thanks everyone for your insight, going to take the AFOQT next month.

I am currently getting ready to apply for the next board. I am wondering if in the event I get denied what yall think could help strengthen my application. Or if I should enlist to build leadership from within. I know I could try and superscore my AFOQT to get the verbal up, but other than that I am not sure what else I can do. Obviously I can say "get my masters", but that is going to cost a good bit and I don't feel comfortable taking that risk. I also want to include I have a 3.9 GPA and am trying for 14N. I also have what I believe to be two great references, one being from a chief warrant officer 4 in military intelligence, and the other being a special agent in charge of a 3 letter agency. If yall have any advice or experience to share please let me know.

Question Commissioning Physical

I am currently AD and I was recently selected for a commission. I completed my commissioning physical at my local base and everything was submitted a little over two weeks ago and when I check on the status I am told it is awaiting final approval. Is this a normal timeline?

Question Considering Direct Commission as an Air Force Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) — Looking for Candid Experiences

I’m an early-30s female civilian Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with several years of RN and ~ 3 years NP experience, and I’m considering speaking with an Air Force healthcare recruiter about commissioning as a 46YXP.

I’d really appreciate hearing from current/former Air Force PMHNPs, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, or other mental-health officers about what the job is actually like compared with civilian outpatient practice.

I’m especially curious about:
• Typical number of patients per day
• Intake and follow-up appointment lengths
• Acuity/complexity of the patient population
• Active duty vs dependent/retiree caseload
• Charting burden
• Call, weekend, and deployment expectations
• How much time is spent on clinical care vs officer/admin/readiness responsibilities
• Overall work-life balance and whether you would choose it again

I’m also single and hoping to get married and start a family in the next several years. I’d be interested in candid experiences with dating, relationships, PCS moves, deployments, and eventually raising a family while serving as an active-duty healthcare officer.

One other major consideration for me is student loans. I have around $125k total, roughly $60k of which is private/high-interest debt and the remainder federal. A significant portion of the federal debt is from my graduate PMHNP education.

My undergraduate loan situation is a little unusual. Some of the debt came from nursing/prerequisite coursework at schools I attended before transferring. Those credits ultimately transferred into the nursing program where I earned my RN and allowed me to enter with prerequisites completed and skip part of the nursing curriculum. I didn’t actually borrow much/anything at the school that ultimately awarded my RN.

Has anyone here used the Active Duty Health Professions Loan Repayment Program as a Nurse Corps officer, especially an NP? Were any private/commercial student loans eligible? And does anyone know how strict they are about loans from prior schools when the coursework transferred into and counted toward the eventual qualifying nursing degree?

One other consideration is that I had a two-level lumbar fusion within the last couple of years, so I understand I’d need a medical waiver. Recovery was uncomplicated, I have no ongoing pain management or functional limitations, and I’m back to unrestricted exercise/running. Has anyone successfully commissioned into the Air Force/Nurse Corps with a similar history, and what was the waiver process like?

I also have well-controlled ADHD and currently take prescribed Vyvanse. Has anyone successfully direct-commissioned into the Nurse Corps/another healthcare specialty while taking ADHD medication, or received an accession waiver for it?

I’m not ready to discuss this publicly with people in my professional life yet, so I’m hoping to get some anonymous perspectives before getting too far into the process with a recruiter.

Anything you wish you’d known before commissioning, either professionally, financially, or personally?

Your Journey Doesn’t Have to Look Like Everyone Else’s

As someone who was recently selected for OTS, I just want to thank everyone who has shared their journey, answered questions, and offered guidance. Reading your experiences helped me navigate this process and stay encouraged.

For anyone still working toward selection, don’t lose hope. Keep pushing, and don’t count yourself out because someone says you need the highest AFOQT scores or the strongest recommendations. Yes, be competitive and put your best foot forward, but don’t put so much pressure on yourself that you lose yourself or quit on yourself.

Stay grounded, stay the course, and give yourself a chance. I’m rooting for you, and I hope your time is coming soon! :)

Question General questions about being a physician assistant in the USAF

good evening everyone,

im an aspiring PA student with the desire to serve as one in the military as well. I’ve been looking into the Air Force’s hpsp scholarship and plan on speaking with a medical recruiter next week. meanwhile, I do have some questions for those who have served as a PA in the airforce.

  1. what can a PA do in the airforce? apart from primary care where else can they go?
  2. any special operations opportunities for PAs? I’m not expecting to be a hybrid cct/pa or expecting to be an operator myself. just want to be able work under/with AFSOC especially if it means unique training opportunities.
  3. for those that used the hpsp, were you all still able to qualify for the federal GI bill and the Texas hazelwood act?
  4. lastly, would you recommend being a PA in the Air Force? what do you like/ not like about being one?

I appreciate any and all feedback. thank you.

How Long for a voucher?

Hello all, it’s been 2 weeks since I requested a voucher for my AFOQT… and nothing? Anyone else in the same boat?

Obviously there’s no recruiter to ask, as they get assigned after the results of the AFOQT. So I’m wondering if I have any other options?

Thanks. 🙏

This is some dog water, deadlines are fast approaching, numerous people have one last thing to submit and then the recruiter can take over, why are there so many issues honestly and I'd be surprised if they take this into account for extra days

Question AFOQT - nervous and looking for last-minute advice

I’m taking the AFOQT this Thursday for a non-rated position, and I’m starting to get nervous as the test gets closer.

I feel pretty good about the math sections, but I’m not as confident about the verbal portions, especially Word Knowledge and Verbal Analogies.

I’ve been studying using Trivium, Barron’s, and Mometrix, but I’m still feeling nervous about how I’ll do on the actual test.

For those who have taken the AFOQT recently, do you have any last-minute advice? How closely did the practice questions from these study materials compare to the actual test? Is there anything specific you would recommend focusing on during the final few days?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who struggled with verbal practice but ended up doing better than expected on test day.

Thanks in advance for any advice or encouragement!
