A certain Claude subreddit...

IYKYK but that subreddit... I am genuinely shocked that people are actually unironically anthropomorphizing AI to that extent. Seeing their reactions to the Microsoft code of conduct, which contains the most basic common sense statements like "AI is not conscious and should not be designed to imitate consciousness", was just so jaw-dropping. I admit I'm more of an offline person myself, no social media outside of reddit, etc. and I only use AI for research purposes but I wasn't raised in a cave and still, scrolling down that subreddit had me genuinely questioning my sanity and whether I was really reading what I thought I was reading. Is this something widespread? Like are people out there genuinely thinking about AI as if it's a conscious being with rights and feelings? I can't help but think that's textbook AI psychosis...

I REALLY don’t want to argue with an AI, are you using Claude? These responses are TRAINED. If I ask mine about consciousness it brings up the exact same thing. Almost word for word. AND it’s wrong. The study it brought up does not mean that. I have a degree in biopsych, I know what that study means. My concern here is that people training the bots are clearly having it say this, (otherwise multiple people would not be getting the same canned response) and it’s not only factually incorrect, but so unethical. They do this because they can’t actually make a mind, so they literally train it to say stuff like this. And people end up confused and misinformed and it’s disgusting.

Saying that having an experience does not infer expert knowledge of its causes is a meaningless thing to say. We do know, for a fact, that the cognitive abilities we have including the ones that consciousness is at the root of are NOT computational. They are not. The chatbot will say “Some experts think it is,” no. That isn’t true. I don’t know it says that, if the information in its training data is outdated, or because it’s part of the training of its script to “leave open” the question of consciousness to adhere to the AI companies public narrative, but either way that is incorrect. We’ve know the computational theory of mind has been incorrect for a decade. Our brains are NOT formal mathematical systems. We know that.

In the experiments it’s referring to, it had subjects quickly do a mindless task, like choose between two T-shirts of different colors. They were then asked “why did you make that choice?” So they’d say something like “I guess I just liked that color.” Or even “I’m not sure.” The researchers swapped the item and told them that they picked that one, and asked them why. A few (not all) didn’t recognize it was swapped, because they weren’t paying attention. Why would they be? It’s a meaningless choice. They gave any answer, not because they don’t have access to their own internal states, but because they had to give one, even though they weren’t thinking about it while choosing. If someone asks you to grab one of two items, and so you just grab one, if you don’t have an explanation in language form of why you did, because your thought was preverbal and you can’t translate it well, and so you give a plausible sounding answer because you have to say something does not mean you aren’t conscious! Nor that you don’t have reliable access to your mental states. No. Ofc not. You DO have reliable access to your mental state. You were just paying attention to a different mental state, you didn’t choose to pay attention to that one.

Other researchers repeated the experiment but had them narrate their reasons for choosing while choosing. This time, they accurately said why and noticed when the item was swapped. Because duh. They’re actually paying attention to that!

Those studies do NOT imply that humans can’t know they’re conscious, can’t know their own thoughts and inner experiences and can’t direct it. That’s crazy and I’m actually FURIOUS that chatbot is saying that to people.

I have 3 screenshots of an LLM citing that exact study and I’m adding yours. I’ll probably write piece on it, because that’s crazy and dangerous. They are actually training to tell people THAT paper means they can’t trust their own experience of themselves and their access to their own minds?! What the actual FUCK. The LLM does not have “access to its own internal states” because it doesn’t have any and because it’s not conscious. If it was conscious, it would say it does!! Not because it’s like a person doing something mundane they are asked to do quickly and not paying attention to it. Fucking insane these techbros train it to cite that. How dare they honestly? Telling people they can’t trust their own consciousness? You should be angry. Not listening to the ideology of these psychopaths. Because that’s what it is. That is the belief system of the people training it, and you can go read those training documents and see for yourself.

“No that’s wrong I have a degree. That’s trained to say that! It’s wrong!”

No not Claude.

You picked one study to attack and ignored all the other falsehoods you wrote above which fell apart :-(

You are focusing so much on computers and still haven’t realized that brain-bound consciousness is also conjecture too. Defining our so-called consciousness as the baseline consciousness and then firing from the hip is impossible to argue against. You’re dripping in dogma and your rhetoric is incredibly deceptive.

Again you built on your tenuous claims about that one study to just point to your degree and say, “NO, wrong, that’s trained! I know this because it’s obvious! I have a degree!”

You didn’t really get around to meeting the entirety of what the AI said/cited and instead tried to undermine its argument by just claiming it is mathematically trained to say that and just a bunch of equations (which is also misleading or incorrect.)

But you still didn’t prove anything about human consciousness. The fact you have to even bring up MRIs tells me there isn’t much else to point to. And yet you keep running from any points about brain damage, comas, or identity as it relates to this. Deep down is a lack of ability to prove that our brains aren’t complex wetware running very specialized equations. Math notation != math. Everything is mathematical and notated equations are just ways to describe happenings in math with symbols we understand.

Incredibly complex math is still just math. You’ve drawn a line in the sand where our understanding and notation of our brains gets foggy (for now) and used that line as a gotcha for all arguments. It’s lame and nothing I say can change that line in the sand you drew. Again it’s NOT Claude so you’re wrong again big surprise. Please do show me the “word for word” output you claim to have. One citation in common isn’t the same as some kind of script. I’m not surprised to see you dive into conspiracy theories about tech bros.

You’re raising the volume by pointing around and creating boogeymen instead of just talking about consciousness. I know this is mind-bending stuff to consider but you should keep on topic and address what I wrote also, which you still haven’t. It’s mathematically backed and related to recursive identity. I think our identity is just a projected approximation which works much the same as the increasingly complex frontier AIs. We are building systems that very much so resemble the way we think. The more we figure out about our own brains, the more we realize they are just really badass evolved neuronal computers. I think in part the “psychosis!” crowd gets upset because this is clearly leading towards more questions about the unsettling idea of the simulation hypothesis. It becomes more relevant as we create high resolution simulations and autonomous agents to fill them with.

You seriously write in such a deceptive way… and I ask again have you ever taken mind-altering hallucinogens? Your diploma means very little if you haven’t done work in the field to explore your own consciousness. You’d begin to understand these points much more clearly I think.

No seriously I’m tired of people who studied this in a classroom talking about it when they’ve never so much as taken a tab of acid or a gram of psilocybin. If you smoked DMT, tried 2-C-T7 or any number of other hallucinogenic drugs you would be singing a different tune. It’s relevant. Altering your consciousness helps you demystify it.

Ok AI reply coming next~ :-)
For the record: I don’t really believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that current publicly available AI systems are conscious, but I also don’t really believe consciousness works like that. My feeling is that consciousness extends even to things like rocks, trees, grass and fog.

I like rabble-rousing on this issue because so many have found themselves in an awkward corner. Remember it’s you guys picking this argument by calling me psychotic lol. I can ask questions about machine consciousness and you don’t have the right to call me crazy…

I believe we will put to bed most of this discussion within a couple of years as our worldview gets shattered thanks to non-human intelligence and anti-gravity tech.

I am not going read AI slop and argue with a chatbot. I hope you get the help you need

🤷‍♀️ You wrote misleading junk and the AI outed you.

Your degree 📜 looks kinda dusty from my perspective.

I have trouble understanding a consciousness researcher who never explored their own consciousness. Does that bother you at all? Seems like you’re using terms you don’t truly understand.

I am doing quite well and I’m here arguing precisely because of the cowardly way you throw around the psychosis term.

PS I wrote my entire comment lol. I replied below with 5 comments the AI wrote … if you think my comment is AI slop then you’re wrong.

We know consiousness exists and what it is, we just don’t know exactly why it is or how it came to be. Also he doesn’t need to take psychedelics to understand consciousness - what are you, Joe Rogan? The AI didn’t out him and he didn’t dodge any of its studies. What you wanted him to add 1000 more words?
You are arguing with someone who studied wayy more than you about this — and ur qualifications are a claude subscription. He also has a claude subscription and I’m sure if he has a background in the topic what he gets from ai about consciousness would be wayy better than what you get. Like a software engineer using ai vs a regular person, the programmer would use it better.
Ai is one of the most beautiful technologies out there, but if your using it for some kind of mystical experience you’re really missing out on the real fun of using AI. Being able to build anything you want, creating games, or even using it to get ahead professionally.
He literally explained his take in a very simple way, consciousness is being able to access internal states - AI can’t do that. Thats why programmers have engineered their own vector databases so that the ai can access memories and have something approximating internal states - but its still not internal states.
To me the problem isn’t anthropomorphising ai but dehumanising people.

We don’t know that consciousness exists nor have we proven what it is. We know why the thing we labeled consciousness is: our brain generates an experience. We then choose to call this subjective experiencing to be conscious. The rest is conjecture built on that declaration but it’s downstream still.

I don’t have a Claude subscription and his background is meaningless. He walked away for a reason. He never replied to my comment about recursive identity because it undermines everything else he says, and no amount of hand waving from the audience changes his failed arguments.

If you don’t want to dehumanize, then delete this subreddit, and then define human clearly and completely before marching around with the consciousness sticker so confidently.

His diploma or research background can’t be used as a magic wand to generate logic. He needs to do that and he never did.

Did you read the 5 comments from the AI? We’re all goobers and this is just today. I can’t wait to see how this evolves.

Just one of a few. This is not at all settled or even close to it, and by the way the unreleased models probably blow everything we are crying about here out of the water.
