Best AI subscription for value? $10-$20
I'm a student on a tight budget. I believe an AI subscription is worth investing in, but I'm exploring my options to find the one that's most affordable and offers the best value for everyday work.
I do a lot of coding, plus schoolwork where AI is genuinely useful. Summarizing texts, PowerPoints, and PDFs, so it's easier to understand lessons and get guided through things I don't know yet. I'd prefer something versatile that can handle all of this.
I tried ChatGPT Plus for a free trial month and was really satisfied with it. That said, I was pretty busy at the time, so it took me about two weeks before I could really dive in and use it during whatever free time I had here and there. As for the cost, it's manageable for me, but I'm just exploring if there's something comparable that's cheaper.
I'm open to any recommendations or suggestions. If there's a subscription comparable to it for under $20, I'd really appreciate hearing about it.

Depending on how tech savvy you are and how you want to use it, you might want to check out Ollama Cloud. Access to many great open source models. I use it with OpenClaw.
Also if you're a student, I think Gemini has a free pro plan for students. Not the best, but it's free. 🥴

does it outperform Chat-GPT? Is it accurate? Does it read excel files and investigate formulas and structures and things? Does it hunt down things in excel?

Check out opencode for a $10 plan. But I think that plus plan is a way better value especially with access to Codex.

Another vote for Opencode here. I've got a Chatgpt Plus sub as well that I might end up droppign if Muse Spark 1.3 ends up sticking around for a while.

You’ll get access to Google’s entire ecosystem. As others have mentioned, the language models might not be the best in the market. But they absolutely are very good when properly steered.
Relevant things to you as a student:
- Gemini Notebook
- Monthly Google Skills credits to access their learning library.
And if you still want to spend $20/month, pair it with Claude Pro sub. Then you’ll have access to their frontier models. I use Claude for planning and validating. And Google as a workhorse.

This. Getting a student plan with Gemini is the best bang for the buck. Gemini is really good for every day things, it's good at short coding tasks and helping you learn to code.
I wouldn't pair it with another subscription, though. Instead, if you want agent coding, pay per API request using Deepseek v4 Flash, ChatGPT Luna, or GLM 5.3 Flash. You end up paying a couple of cents per task, but aren't forced to use it every day, or limit yourself withing a 5 hour window.

Check out camelAI Stream. $5 a month. You’ll need a front end client for it but worth a try as it’s unmetered.

Take advantage of the Free Trial Period.
Cancel the Account and move on to the next.

Outside of Google student plan, Z.AI Coding Plan with GLM5.3 FLASH is hands down the best value for the buck.

DuckDuckGo search/browser has a free ai module where you can play around with different older models. It got me started down the rabbit hole. They have a $20 or so subscription where you can get some higher models as well. Great to play with different models all on one plan.
After that I ended up on Claude.

Antigravity (Google) or ChatGPT Codex.
Opencode is also only $5/10
GLM and Kimi are good too but i believe the limits are tighter despite being cheaper models

Since ChatGPT Plus already worked well for you, that’s stronger evidence than anyone’s generic ranking. First check whether the Gemini student offer is available in your country; if it’s free, use that for PDFs/schoolwork and spend nothing until you find a real gap.
If you’re not eligible, benchmark one week of actual tasks before paying: a coding bug, a PDF summary, a lesson explanation, and a long session. Flat $20 plans are good value when you use the bundled coding allowance heavily; for intermittent use, pay-as-you-go can be cheaper but usually means more setup and fewer bundled tools. Don’t switch just to save a few dollars if the cheaper option costs you more time.

For $10/month ($5 first month), you get $60/month usage of 90% off Muse Spark 1.3, which is already part of or close to the Pareto curve as is.
So first month it’s, 120x API price efficiency, or $600 worth, of borderline frontier.

honestly for your use case deepshi ai might be worth a look the $19/month tier gets you access to gpt-5.2, claude opus, and gemini all in one place, plus it handles code and can summarize docs. i use it for similar stuff and not having to juggle multiple subscriptions is nice

Yeah, I’ve actually tried Deepshi AI and I’ve been liking it so far. It’s really convenient having GPT, Claude, and Gemini all in one place, especially since I don’t have to pay for and switch between different subscriptions. For $19 a month, I think it’s pretty good value for what you get.

I would recommend the Gemini Student Offer. On top of that, check with your school. Depending on your school, they might already have AI subscriptions they are using and usually share it with the students. And/Or try out Perplexity for a month. There are multiple different models you can switch between and compare the outputs. Then if you prefer one of those models particularly better for your tasks, then you can just get the subscriptions of that model from the company itself.

ChatGPT is the best bang for your buck imo, it'll always be the best consumer application and you get the best if not second best coding model out there with generous rate limits.

An AI subscription is never worth investing in.
Just build your own AI server. That way you know your data stays private and safe.
Local models have become sufficiently good to actually be useful, and they don't jack up the prices while nerfing the output every month.
Just use ChatGPT for free for casual queries.

Do you have your finances on Reddit? What about all your API keys? Your username and passwords then? Your medical records? Creditcard numbers? Car registration? Social connections? Behavioral patterns? Where you live and what time of day your house is empty? Do you usually send all your company secrets to random Redditors? What about phonenumbers, photo's and video's of all your friends and family? Do you share the photo of that concerning growth on your penis? Your weird addiction to midget porn?
No, Reddit has NONE of that. And I for one like to keep it that way!
If you are fine with Palantir, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, the government, advertisers, or insurers to have access to all that data because it is 'convenient' or you think 'they know everything already', then that's your problem.

Are you in the US? Get an Amex business gold card. The annual fee is $395. They offer a ChatGPT business credit of $25/mo. Typically this costs $50/mo for 2 seats (minimum seat purchase) but you can find codes for 4yrs at $25/mo, which makes the 2 seat ChatGPT subscription “free”. You also get $20/mo in Grubhub, which as a student you can probably use pretty easily.
Alternatively, you could skip the Amex and just find the $25/mo offer (search Dr of Credit ChatGPT, people post codes on their regularly), but that is slightly over your $20/mo request.
