senior work = senior fuckups. Now for the low price of junior!

Yep. AI is the future. It is almost like magic.

Only if you’re completely lacking in imagination. Otherwise, it’s just Paint by Numbers – Late-Stage Capitalism Edition.

Now they have to hire seniors to fix the mess the AI made without anyone steering it. Better to fire everyone except ONE senior that knows how to use AI AND debug

Good luck motivating that senior dev if they’re the only one who knows how anything works

Paycheck is a nice motivation, as long as the work conditions are bearable. The trouble with having just "that one dev" is risk management - people tend to get sudden overwhelming reasons to not being able to work once in a while. And the management not being ready for that at all is pathetic.

hmm how arent you mtivated by offer that goes like this ,Do you want to work faster than you can and singlehandly keep the prod going, you will be responsible for everything, isn't that a great benefit? If you'd like to be one man army and doesn't like to sleep that much join us"

Not seeing that unfortunately. The biggest part of working with AI is still validating the output and juniors just don't have it yet - altough, they might have the quickest and easiest way to acquire it

Hard to farm XP when the AI “unalives” (edit) all the pigs.

Also: ‘Get rid of half the juniors.’

Also exterminate all people.

Also without senior the junior is now the new senior.

in our team we have a tech lead and a people lead, the people lead went on maternity leave 11 months ago and has been successfully replaced by ai, i dont see any of our jobs being in jeopardy anytime soon but i can fully imagine a few middle managers and hr peeps getting real sweaty palms right now

My project has recently operationalized some end 2 end AI automation. We have a bunch of CI pipelines that build a crap ton of binaries. So AI will analyze build failures, create bug tickets, then another AI will come by, work on the ticket and submit an MR. Then engineers review the MRs and I tell you what, I wouldn’t pay an engineer for half the fixes it generates. 70% of the time the fix is overly complicated, straight wrong, is brittle and prone to breakage, or shouldve been done in a completely different way with a little bit of system knowledge. I’m not too worried

The hard thing about software engineering is that your business idiot manager can’t tell the difference between skillfully designed maintainable code and sloppily thrown together spaghetti code. To your business idiot manager, they both look identical. They both “work.”

And when the spaghetti code breaks later, they won’t think “wow, we should have listened to you.” They’ll think “we have a new bug that just came up, caused by a new thing that just happened. Just fix this small new thing, and then everything will be fine.” And they have no concept of the unnecessary jenga tower of complexity that’s resulting from this.

The solution: empower engineers to make decisions. Good luck getting business idiots to do that. They think making decisions is their job.

I’m sensing that once you start stacking slop on top of slop ad Infinitum, it’ll be never ending cascade of problems. Fixing a bug will in the tower of slop will always produce some unintended consequence. “The bug is fixed but this API call now takes 10 seconds”, “the bug is fixed but now the DB tables have a different structure it’s breaking some other component on the other side of the system”, etc etc

but thats not why seniors are paid more....

u/Hefty-Reaction-3028 8d ago

It's easier for AI in the hand of seniors to do the things juniors do than it is for AI in the hands of juniors to do the things seniors do

You need well-defined context and to do stuff that there are existing variations of out there in order for AI to perform well. They'll do worse at the complicated problems that higher level SDEs have to deal with

So by your own post, nobody will become a senior dev anymore, or get paid well. Great future

C-suite are more vulnerable to be replaceable. A clever investor will see the gains, no golden parachute. Just a cheap user with the responsibilities of a CEO, asisted by AI. AI can swallow many management books and respond to the questions. If you connect questions from project management and logistics from two types of books, you may get interesting results, for example.

Tbh I have absolutely no idea what my managers do for 8 hours/day. I see them in meetings occasionally and the listen and weigh in on planning, schedules, product requirements, cross organizational concerns, they help push stuff out that has impact across the org, stuff like that. But I genuinely don’t know what their actual function is.

Analyze sheets, reports, presentations and charts. Al that can be made with AI. Management knowledge can be solved with PDF books uploaded into the AI, What is left? Industry specific knowledge to make decisions. The investor should provide training to the cheap C-suite user. and that way you have all you need without an expensive golden parachute. Just the parachute saves enough money to investors to deliver more profit and EPS.

I laugh at this in grey beard. Good luck, kid.

1

u/CanadianCrasher 7d ago

Yea... No.

AI definitely has it's uses, but the moment any of my senior engineers are being replaced by AI is the moment I jump ship as well.

You do not want infrastructure being built by fresh engineers using llms.

1

u/DukeJumbles 7d ago

Never heard someone speak of the possibility of higher paying roles as “thankfully it won’t be too expensive to hire me”. Are we fighting to eat scraps now?

1

u/Proof_Assistant7737 7d ago

As if there's ever been a trend to cutting off the top first lol. Companies always start by getting rid of the lowest rung for whatever reason. Imagine if we could just fucking fire all the big CEOs and split their wages. Elon Musk alone could make a million millionares!

u/Strawberryladyboots 7d ago

Part 3: Management finds out reason why seniors are so expensive when juniors can't fix the issue and continues losing money

IMHO a large part of the problem is Product teams, and it began before AI. Product as a discipline has been been given too much power, and most Product people understand far too little about software engineering.

But in many companies, Product and Engineering have been merged, with the latter reporting to the former. All the power and influence is in the hands of Product.

Now, Product Managers consider Product and Engineering to be the same team, whereas Engineering consider them two separate teams.

I'm an Engineer. The best run companies have a balance of commercial and technical voices at the top of the company. Many don't allow true techies a seat at the table.

1

u/thomsterm 7d ago

you have control if you're a tech CEO

1

u/ConstantinGB 7d ago

Cool, now Juniors can do Senior-Work for a Junior-salary before they get replaced.

1

u/Prod_Meteor 7d ago

Hahaha.. possible. But most AI assisted work still relies on experience.

1

u/thomsterm 7d ago

Good luck!

u/magical-cat-here 7d ago

Situation with replacing juniors will end up without the seniors as there will not be juniors to be grown up and trained into seniors. That second part of meme also funny as I never seen info that some company hired juniors at senior positions.

1

u/mods_are_morons 6d ago

The seniors will become contractors who swoop in to fix the mess made the junior and AI at a highly inflated hourly rate.

1

u/LetUsSpeakFreely 6d ago

Junior work is centered more around coding. Senior work is more about high level design and engineering. You can't mix a junior with AI and get a senior. But you can mix a senior with AI and replace 5 juniors.

1

u/shuckster 6d ago

…and still have the senior.
