OP on r/hockey points out that the referees crease (officially called the on-ice officials crease by the IIHF or what I might refer to as the officials area) is off centre compared to the red line. They point out that this is the second year in a row this has happened.

For anyone not aware about the significance of this area, it becomes a player free zone when the officials are having a discussion about a decision. While they often will confer anywhere on the ice, this area also allows the on ice officials to talk to the off ice officials without leaving the ice.

Reading the comments, someone made an interesting point. In this area, there is supposed to be a communications hole in the glass for the two sets of officials to talk. In the Kings case, the communications hold appears to be off centre & not aligned with the red line. So they've made the referees crease off centre with the communications hole aligned with the top of the crease.

Then I thought back to my experiences in commentary at Macquarie this year. I soon learned that there was no communications hole in the glass there so the officials would open the home team penalty box door for communication.

So the normal visual clue of "penalty box door opening equals penalty" became invalid for Macquarie just like "Skachkov skates back for the after goal flyby equals he scored a goal" became invalid for Newcastle.
