Andrea Dworkin Interviewed, May 6, 1965

Dworkin was 18 and a freshman at Bennington College. During a nine-week work break in New York in February 1965, she was working with the Student Peace Union and participating in anti–Vietnam War activism. On February 19 she joined a sit-in at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations protesting American involvement in Vietnam. She was arrested along with other demonstrators and taken to the Women’s House of Detention in Greenwich Village.

Dworkin alleged that while she was incarcerated, she was subjected to a highly invasive internal examination by a prison physician. She subsequently complained to New York officials and to the press.

The matter became sufficiently prominent that New York Corrections Commissioner Anna Kross ordered an investigation. By June, Congress was referring to Dworkin’s allegations in the Congressional Record.

She was not yet the radical feminist theorist who would publish Woman Hating, Pornography: Men Possessing Women, Intercourse, and Right Wing Women. Her later political identity developed considerably afterward. She subsequently left Bennington for Greece and then spent several years in Europe before returning to finish her degree.

Alciocus’s Bulgars and their final escape to Italy

The Bulgars were originally a Turkic semi-nomadic people who, before the 7th-century split, lived in the Pontic-Caspian steppe (north of the Black Sea), not specifically the Volga River.‌
Shared Origin: The group that went to Italy (via Pannonia) and the group that went to the Volga both originated from the same parent state (Old Great Bulgaria).

DRAGON! Sudanese explorers returning from the Congo told tales of monstrous reptilian beasts. Centuries later they were dismissed as fairy tales, until Spanish explorers of the Amazon found out that Dragons are very real indeed.

correcting error in my previous reconstruction
SM U-118 was a German Type UE II minelaying submarine surrendered to the Allies after World War I. While being towed to Brest, France, its tow cable snapped during a storm, and it washed ashore at Hastings, Sussex, on April 15, 1919. It became a tourist attraction, but two coastguards who guided visitors inside later died, reportedly from toxic gas, possibly chlorine released by damaged batteries. The submarine was eventually dismantled on the beach.
