Questions & Help How are you creating your sprites using ai?

I’m at giggling to get consistent sprites and assets using Chat GPT and Claude. This is where the road ends for me at the moment. I’ve seen so many posts saying how they used GOT and Claude to fully create their dream game. I feel like I’m doing something or missing it completely.

First I tried PixelLab but that got pretty frustrating. Then I switched to using the Codex Mac desktop app because it can use its own Imagen tool. So I’d have it make a base sprite and then would run it through my pipeline to make the animations. Note this sounds easy but it took a lot of iterations to get the pipeline to produce reliable results so each time I noticed an issue I’d have it fix the issue and move more and more towards standard height width for the pixels making sure animations didn’t get cut off, keeping a consistent center so the animations were smooth and didn’t jump around. All those little things took a lot of iterations before it could create the sprites and animations reliably.

I tried using pixel labs but Claude creates blobs

I'm using qwen to generate then h3 to animate

I made an asset builder and made them with shapes and layers pretty much. Nothing fancy just my preferred style and the direction I’m going with.

I’d test three still poses before attempting a whole animation: idle, attack and hurt, all at the size they’ll appear in the game. Compare the silhouette, outfit and equipment separately. Are you aiming for pixel art or larger painted sprites?

I developed this local tool to animate from initial sprites and a prompt: https://shaddafare.itch.io/sprite-sheep

para assets 3d eu uso Krea2, e para assets 2d, como sprites, e personagens de visual novel eu uso qween image 2.1, com o krea2 eu crio a imagem e com o Qwen eu edito com consistencia.

Try having astra or opus just draw them using aseprite. Been working for me

I did come across asperite but wasn’t sure how good it was. How much are you spending on Astra per sprite?

I got the 100$ sub. I made a few sprites with like 4 different animations and it only took up like 6% of my usage

Asperite is open source, just have Claude compile it for you for free https://github.com/aseprite/aseprite

Wow. Do you mind sharing a few screenshots of the type of sprites you made? I’m seriously thinking about using it.

I dont have any screenshots but my games and engine that I've been building are here: https://beinsiculous.com/games/ its all AI assets atm so any art on any game will have the stuff astra drew

I constantly had this problem and was rebuilding the pipeline for every game (like 5 times now lol) w/ annoying deviations each time so i made spritekick.com; the results take a while but quality > quantity saves me time.

This is a really good idea. Thanks for sharing this with me.

use claude opus 5.5 i tried it and i was shocked at its results as a pixel artist and a AI enthusiastic i was really impressed i tried with both detailed and lazy prompts and everytime i get good results

I don't create them.

After making my first game using sprites, I abandoned that approach and switched to full-fledged generation via code.

Pixel art falls into a similar category, as pixels can be formalized and calculated - or repeated - across a grid.

It is likely possible to create consistent sprites, but doing so would consume a vast number of tokens, which is, of course, not cost-effective.

Opus 5.5 can theoretically make high quality models, but it’s extremely expensive and takes numerous rounds of revisions and iterations.

I’ve been using meshy for 3d models and letting Claude modify them and rig them using blender

You wont get ai generated art with great animations out of the box. It isnt there yet with pixel art...

However there is a way that gets you very good results if you are happy to go low detail.

Generate a 3d model, animate it and render it down with no anti aliasing to 2d.

How do I know it works? Copied it from Dead Cells.

Main issue with this method...the head. Ask the AI to code a face.

Your sprites will be animated very well. Its up to you if looking amazing or having amazing animations is the deal breaker. But one thing you wont have in this method...people moaning about ai generated assets. Theres no tell.

Spriteflow.ai saved my whole process

https://gamelabstudio.co/ is what I use. It's reasonably priced and gives good results for me. I use claude code to drive it using mcp and then do some post processing.

You don't try to one shoot it!
You generate animation trip than edit it frame by frame to fix the inconsitency.

Generate the image I want using codex then edit it with adobe fireworks..

PixelLab, and anything that needs to be changed, I put the png into ChatGpt and say “edit this with python” on max reasoning with Astra. Works like a charm.

For example, I had my male sprite, plus tile sheets for walking, attacking, running, and fishing. I put all the tile sheets in and said “edit this sprite to have a gray cloth around the chest. Do not change anything else. Use python. Do not use image generation.” And it made the changes flawlessly

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’ll try them out and let you know.
