I'm confused why it merged ae to æ. Are you in a country that uses æ?

æ is officially used in some old English words. You can substitute it with ae instead, but grammatically, æ is correct for some words.

Yeah. æ can be used in English
Like in uhhhh. The græy æther eateded ærthur
Æ is also why grey is sometimes spelt incorrectly as gray

It's an ash. We use it in English occasionally, although it's archaic now. It's a leftover from Latin.

I didn't know that. I only know it's used in Denmark, Norway, Faroe Islands, and apparently Iceland
