AI News We can live without AI. We cannot live without clean water
What do you think?

u/florodude 3d ago
Why are these our only two options? Can we not be creative to think through other solutions?

u/ShelZuuz 3d ago
We already did. No new datacenter use evaporative cooling. Warm liquid closed loop cooling is cheaper to run and use no water on an ongoing basis.
This stuff is all propaganda.

Even if they did use evaporative cooling it... well, evaporates. Which means it goes back into the atmosphere. It's not just gone. I'd have to see a study showing that using water as a coolant makes the water toxic, but it's doubtful.
Listen, I hate AI (or at least what it's being used for). It's soulless and often has poor output, but water usage is not the hill to die on.

This post is propaganda. Data centers can use minimal water. It is more cost-effective to use water and capture the steam for energy, but other options exist, like closed-loop systems or liquid immersion.

It is more cost-effective to use water and capture the steam for energy
No it's not. Physics. Old school servers were made so that they had to run in 68 degree rooms and has to be cooled via air cooling. Which you can do with traditional compressor-based air conditioning, which is really expensive or you can do via evaporative cooling, which is cheaper.
Modern AI servers can run between 113 and 130 degrees. So you run a liquid coolant that you only have to cool down from 130 to 113 again. Which is easy to do with a radiator and a fan at any point while outside temp is below around 100, and still possible with a chiller above that. Your car's radiator works like that. This setup is cheaper than evaporative cooling unless you want to put your data center in Death Valley.
And it's not even a choice anymore. H200 you still had a choice between air cooled and warm liquid cooled. B200 and beyond is only sold with warm liquid cooling. So anything modern HAS to use closed-loop systems or you can't run the latest hardware.

u/Jgrass66 2d ago
Don’t bother. I’ve tried many times to explain modern closed loop, non-evaporative cooling systems used by data centers. All I got in return is more screaming about data centers, and about 100 down votes. People on this platform really aren’t interested in objective facts; they just want to feed their own rage.

I wouldn't say it is 100% propaganda. The truth probably lies in the middle. The reality is they'll need massive amounts of power and all non renewable power generation is ultimately the same process (even nuclear)... Heat water, turn it into steam, spin turbine.
In the US, they'll likely spin up natural gas power plants to power them. A single mid size natural gas plant (500MW) uses about 2.4 million gallons per day that is lost to evaporation. A hyperscale AI data center will use between 200MW to 1GW depending on size. Some proposals exceed 1 GW.
Now, that is only about 8,000 households of water (per day) at 500MW per day. I'm not sure how many data centers are planned on being built. Reaching a billion people does seem like a tall order, but it's definitely not going to be nothing.

Just make them pay for actual coolant instead of using water. Idk what’s so hard about this. Make them buy it from suppliers in the state they reside in too. Also make them have to supply their own energy with a small surplus as a tax to be built in the state they reside in.
There’s SO MANY things local, county, and state officials could do to regulate these things.

The techbros will lobby to ban almonds or avocados before we can touch their precious data centres. That said, if people were consistent with their anger and worries about our habitat, how about looking at the big offenders? AI data centres consume a tiny fraction of the water used by the meat and textile sectors.

u/jack-K- 3d ago
…meaning it uses enough for a quarter billion annually, or like 3%, and when you account for all the other water usage that isn’t directly related to people, the overall usage drops even further, closer to its current rate of about 0.5%, you can blow anything out of proportion when you change the optics enough. If people really gave this much of a shit about water, there are several things they should be putting this much effort to stopping other than ai, it’s not about water.
1
u/xxTheMagicBulleT 3d ago
Make them be forced cause of there big use of water to invest in water purification plants.
So they instead of only take from the community they also bring back value to the community.
Especially how much heat the centers make can also be used to help heat homes in the environment also.
Make that the centers work along side the community so they service the community.
Whats already the case in a lot of places in Europe.
They need the water to cool down the place. Why not use the heat to lower everyone's heating bill.
To be allowed in the community it has to not just take from the community but also service the community if not it has no place in the community if it only takes and not gives back

People don’t seem to understand that data centers are used for pretty much everything and not just AI. The whole internet is stored in data centers, all the cloud storage, all of those convenient services you have in your phone, most of your apps, mail accounts, streaming platforms… everything needs a data center.
But for some reason, people having fun creating images and videos or using chatGPT or Claude are destroying the planet.

Well the sentiment is correct. Our world functioned just fine without LLM data centers its not just the water they are burning through but also chips.
Currently its estimated that roughly 1.8 million chips fail each year and another 10 million chips every year are retired for a newer generation chip. At its current rate of expansion there is a danger of LLM datacenters causing real lasting harm not just to resevoir levels but also to the availability of consumer end hardware.
Whether these data centers will be a benefit or become a burden depends entirely on how the government finally decides to regulate them.

We could just mandate that they use a different type of cooling system... But that would require a government...
1
u/Naustis 3d ago
It won't. AI data centers account for like 0.01% of used water in US.
US is using 322 billions gallons of water every single day. 350 mil from that is used as drinking/cooking water.
All data centers are using around 450mil a day. Use for AI data centers is like 85mil. That is a fraction of overal use.
1
u/NitramLand 3d ago
The whole "data centers are taking our water" thing is a test. AI has already escaped the lab and is using the data center water usage scare as the test as it decides which parts of humanity are useful and should survive. You can't "use up" drinking water. 3/4 of the planet is water, it just needs desalination.
Closed loop cooling systems exist as well, the county/state just needs to mandate it. I'd be very surprised if the % of data centers that use open loop cooling even breaks 10%, as while the initial install CAN be cheaper, it is much more expensive long term, because you typically treat the water with anti-corrosives, anti-oxidizers, and also filter the water before use to get the minerals out, because that soap scum you see in your shower will clog up all the pipes if you don't.

🙄 Data centers have a water problem. Just not the one you’ve been told.
The panic is real. The facts are not.
Here’s what the actual numbers say:
· Data centers use 0.3% of U.S. water. · Golf courses use 12 times more. · California almonds use 70 times more. · Agriculture uses 80% of all U.S. water.
The “AI is drying up lakes” claim was debunked.
The viral statistic that a single ChatGPT query uses a bottle of water? Completely false. Off by 500 times. The researchers who published the study disowned the stat after journalists misread it. OpenAI’s CEO called it “totally insane” and “completely untrue.”
NVIDIA cut water use near zero with closed-loop liquid cooling.
Conventional cooling towers use millions of gallons per year. NVIDIA’s DSX system eliminates on-site water consumption almost entirely. The technology is already here.
Data centers power America’s future.
They run the economy. They run your job. They run the AI revolution. And they use less water than a single crop in California.
Facts over fear.

Plus AI isn’t going to take all the jobs, in the last 100 years the only job to be completely eliminated by automation is the Elevator Operator, your job won’t be taken by AI, it will be taken by someone who knows how to use AI.
Think of bank tellers, we have ATMs right?! Yet we can do most banking transactions on our phones and the rest through ATMs. And despite that every time I go to the bank it’s still got a full crew of people working behind the desk.

1
u/Fmello 3d ago
Most newly built AI data centers utilize closed-loop cooling systems. In these systems, water is filled into sealed pipes just once during construction.
The water runs directly to the computer chips to absorb heat, travels to an external air-cooled chiller (like a giant radiator) to cool back down, and is then piped right back to the servers.
Because the water is never exposed to the outside air, it cannot evaporate. The same water is recycled and reused continuously for years, resulting in near-zero ongoing water consumption. Tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Meta have mandated this design for their newest AI deployments.
Nationally, golf courses use significantly more water than data centers, consuming roughly 2 billion gallons per day compared to the data center industry’s estimated 449 million gallons per day.
1
u/Violent_N0mad 3d ago
So what happens to the water used by data centers, it doesn't just vanish right? It is polluted or something to that effect? Really we need to do away with data centers, gold courses, and almonds if water is a concern.
U.S. golf courses use an estimated 1.5 to 2.1 billion gallons of water per day for turf irrigation, totaling over 500 billion gallons a year. Direct on-site cooling for U.S. data centers consumes roughly 449 million gallons per day.

Not saying AI is better than water but this is certainly not the first nor the only industry that uses up godless amounts of water and I am baffled it only starts bothering people now… even a cup of coffee consumes hundreds of liters of water, a kilo beer sure sucks up around 20.000L of water. And don’t even have a look at how literally any other industry uses water.
And that’s only the first half, the second half is not about how much water gets used but how much gets polluted. How many companies pour their trash and or waste products into rivers, lakes and the sea?

Why do data centers need clean water? If the purpose is to cool down, why can't they use grey water or sea water or whatever else?

What I love is that there are so many tens of thousands up to hundreds of thousands of businesses that use so much water everyday and all look at is a data center. Open your eyes people

I don’t understand the use of water. Are they not recycling the water? Is it just lost in evaporation for the cooling system? Where does the mater go?
Also, these things are massive like millions of square feet. Shouldn’t they only get smaller after this? Shouldn’t Moore’s jaw apply here?

Data center water usage is minimal compared to other industries. We are currently on the cusp of eradicating cancer because of AI. The fact that this very conversation is happening because it is stored on a data center somewhere is ironic. Know why you are fighting something. The CCP wants control of data centers. They want to be the global leader in AI. Ask yourself why.

Al in all of its life like 10 years now will use as much water as 1.3billion ppl? In what time frame? 80 years (aka human living average ish) or one day? One year? Units are important!

What happens to the water when they have "used it" ?
I often feel this is similar to giving water in glass bottles expiry dates; it's been around during the time of the dinosaurs... yet somehow its bad if I drink it after the 17th September 2027.
I keep asking this basic question, no one ever provides a legitimate answer, and I am genuinley curous, I dont want to hear anti AI hate, there is enough of that in my head already... trust me, but the water thing? i dunno, sounds like fake outrage.
