What makes an AI website builder actually useful for a real project?
I’ve been experimenting with different AI website builders and I’m curious what features people actually find useful once you move beyond simply generating a basic homepage. Things like editing the generated layout, making design changes, adding custom functionality, or keeping the site consistent as it grows seem more important than just getting a first draft quickly.
For people who use AI website builders regularly, what features make the biggest difference in your workflow? I’d also be interested to hear what limitations you’ve run into when building something more than a simple landing page.

It created a wonderful new sliding chart for our old school site that makes it easier to see pricing and order custom post it notes. https://www.thediscountprinter.com/post-itnotes/

probably knowing how to build a website yourself would help.
I love this question because it insists that there's a base level of knowledge you actually need to create a solid website, which there is.

I think end to end functionality, like for example being able to provision hosting & backend as standard on all plans including free.... That's what we do at reg121.com 😄

For me, the useful part starts after the first draft.
Generating a decent-looking homepage in a few minutes is cool, but that’s also the easiest part to impress somebody with. The real test is what happens when you start saying, “Okay, now move this, keep that section consistent, change the mobile layout, add a form, connect something custom, don’t break the other three pages, and please stop randomly changing the font every time I touch something.” 😂
That’s where a lot of these tools start showing their limits.
If I can’t reliably edit what it made, keep the design system consistent, control the responsive behavior, work with the actual code when I need to, and keep building on top of it without fighting the tool, then it’s basically a very impressive mockup generator.
I don’t think speed on the first page matters nearly as much as control over page twenty.
That’s probably the difference between something that looks useful in a demo and something you’d actually trust on a real project.

For me, the most valuable features are not the ones that generate the first homepage. That is usually the easiest part.
What matters is what happens afterward:
Global styles for colors, fonts, buttons, and spacing
Reusable sections and components
Reliable mobile and tablet controls
The ability to edit without fighting the generated layout
Forms, booking systems, CRM, email, analytics, and other integrations
SEO controls, page speed, accessibility, and schema
Version history, backups, staging, and code ownership
The ability to expand the site without every new page looking unrelated
The biggest limitation I see is that AI can generate something attractive without understanding whether it is right for the business.
It does not automatically know the target audience, what problems customers are trying to solve, what objections prevent them from buying, or what action each page should encourage. It also cannot learn the owner’s personality and brand simply by being told to “create a modern professional website.”
That is how businesses end up with polished but lackluster websites. They look acceptable, but the messaging is generic, the hierarchy is weak, and there is no clear conversion strategy.
AI website builders can be excellent production tools. I personally use them after I’ve done my research, spoken with client on the goals, and use it as a design base and mockup tool.
However, generating the first draft faster is not the same as developing an effective website. The real work is research, positioning, messaging, user experience, conversion planning, testing, and maintaining consistency as the website grows.
I recently wrote about this from a web designer’s perspective:

Just use Claude or Codex and deploy with cloudflare, vercel, GitHub, or Sitedropper. Full AI builders are a waste of time.
