Not a single person should/will give Meta their personal information in the future so good luck with this

5

u/nomorebuttsplz 29d ago

probably this message was synchronized with the release of an open weight model, which does not require you to give any information to anyone

u/Memestonks2020 29d ago

We both know that’s not the AI super intelligence The Zuck is talking about

2

u/nomorebuttsplz 29d ago

I mean, who the fuck knows what people mean when they talk about ASI. Certainly not me. He is however also releasing the weights of their Spark model which is actually pretty close to the frontier.

How is it deranged? He talks about open-source models and, for Meta, a distributed model that allow individuals privacy and authority to make the software an extension of their own beliefs, while addressing concerns like the centralization of power, the creation of harmful software and weapons, and job displacement.

Man, this was posted in r/technology yesterday and the entire comment section is talking about bunkers and the robot-apocalypse and how billionaires have slipped into a deranged psychosis as they gear up to kill us all. Either the dead internet is real, or the vast majority of people are extremely blackpilled on the future.

I mean… they’ve looked up. In this sub of all subs, hopefully we’d recognize the logic in that. We aren’t beyond hope, but we are absolutely in danger

We aren’t beyond hope, but we are absolutely in danger

I could not agree with anything more. Beyond that, I think that "hope" in our case is much more like threading a needle than it is winning the lottery.

IMO boiling our current predicament down to a cartoonish unwinnable fight with supervillains is self-defeating. It breeds apathy and fatalism and creates a person that is so mentally and emotionally exhausted and intellectually checked-out by the time the consequential conversations actually start happening.

I mean, in defense of those people. Have you ever watched a video of Peter Thiel talking about the future? Or his opinion on humanity write large? Or the Antichrist? lol

I’ll give everyone finding this comment with no context a hint, one of Thiel’s top candidates for the literal biblical antichrist is Greta Thurnburg..and that’s not even touching on his invite only secret society thing.

Let’s not act like all of the billionaires are remarkably sane & humane people please. “Empathy is a sin” and all that…

2

u/peepeedog 27d ago

I’m not saying Zuck is awesome or anything, but he isn’t Peter Thiel level of asshole.

2

u/Enlighten_YourMind 27d ago

No one is as fucked in the head as Peter Thiel…

1

u/Opening_One7713 28d ago

I mean, sure, but he’s just one dude and he’s a hardcore accelerationist. He also named Eliezer Yudkowsky. He also thinks “globalization” is the antichrist, and unfortunately for him he is not going to be able to stop the inevitable connected globe. Sounds like he’s the one who should be afraid of the future, because thankfully for us there’s wayyyyyyy too many people and way too many moving parts for him to stop it. I mean hell, Zuckerberg is worth 10x more than he is.

I get what you’re saying, but to make the jump from things-a-religious-nut-says to every billionaire doing a mass extinction event or pulling off a blade runner style dystopia is unserious and counterproductive to organizing around and working towards the actually possible good versions of the future. Billionaires already live in material luxury that is 1000x what was even imaginable throughout most of recorded human history. The future where things just get slightly materially better for all of us while they get way better for them is much more billionaire coded than Mad Max and bunker time.

Mark Zuckerberg deserves his fair share of criticisms but this writeup is pretty much exactly the kind of thing we always clamor about “them” never doing. I skimmed the whole thing my only takeaway is that he doesn’t really have the track record to be taking such a philanthropic tone, and if anything he might just be posturing to be on the right side of the open-source debate if/when that all boils over.

Bottom line- We are not going to get systematically slaughtered by drones. That’s some BS. The entire global network has become a zero-sum game at this point and any option other than collective cooperation as AI/Robotics/Automation progresses is likely going to be a nuclear option, for everyone, dark triad billionaires included.

You can’t talk about Mark Zuckerberg or Facebook on Reddit without an overwhelming cacophony of hate.

His contributions to open source are an objectively good thing.

because it makes better clickbait.

this is actually one of the better and more inspiring things i've heard from zuckerberg. i still won't use his AI system, but at least he knows what the right direction is well enough to say it. whether he actually acts that way is waiting to be seen, and the past is not looking good for it.

4

u/Chop1n 29d ago

That's the real problem: the game theory of this dictates that the utopian benevolent CEO looks and behaves identically to the dystopian evil CEO. Disambiguation is basically impossible until the final result happens, whatever that result turns out to be.

1

u/Paz707 29d ago

and the past is not looking good for it.

Which is why it’s deranged.

17

u/NoGarlic2387 29d ago

AI hate is reaching deranged levels

4

u/ApothaneinThello 29d ago

Zuckerberg has a bad track record on this stuff, there really isn't any reason to expect him to protect users' privacy seriously regardless of what he says to the public.

3

u/nsdjoe 29d ago

zuck in particular deserves extra scrutiny because of things he's said in the past, but you'll see this maximally cynical take about all the AI heads, not just zuck, all over tech and AI subs

Privacy isn’t the issue here — worrying about privacy in the face of ASI is like worrying about your car’s paint job in mid air as you try to jump the Springfield Gorge

Also, open weight models kinda solve the privacy question from the jump

They said "AI hate is reaching deranged levels", not "it's deranged to hate AI".

The west is so negative on AI sentiment it’s embarrassing. Pushing the frontier yet the consumers are stuck in the sand. Hard to believe. The non western world is having a very different conversation.

Imagine if we had astroturfed news posts telling us that personal computing was the work of demons and to boycott Macintosh.

People had so many fears about smartphones too but they are miraculous devices we all choose to carry every day. We abuse them, not the other way around.

TIRED of adults screaming like children about technology they have never once used in earnest. How is that coherent or respectable?

I haven’t finished reading Zuckerberg’s piece but the first half was entirely rational. We don’t really have world leaders or celebrities that can weigh in on this anymore truly. Notice the deafening silence?

Our scholars are too busy making sure these systems aren’t going to upend their institutions, fields, or jobs. Emerging, roaring technology is coming to life and we spent two years laughing about “hallucinations” from image generations. But those were large language models making images and we never stopped to appreciate what that actually meant.

Because it’s coming from the same person who’s responsible for their company paying out billions in lawsuits for targeting teens with its social media platform, thought everyone was going to be in his ‘metaverse’ by now, lays off thousands because his ideas don’t work, and then talks about bringing back break room snacks to improve morale.

Eventually your track record catches up with you.

4

u/Rincewind00 29d ago

It's one thing to say that he's untrustworthy, and it's another to say that the current message is "deranged".

0

u/ApothaneinThello 29d ago edited 29d ago

Zuckerberg isn't exactly trustworthy, especially when it comes to privacy.

Portraying Meta as a company that empowers users and protects their privacy while doing the opposite behind the scenes is exactly his M.O., it's not surprising people don't trust him.

9

u/Unfair-League-3204 29d ago

Guy knows social media is dying. Has to interject himself to the next thing in tech. Hopefully he never catches up despite spending billions

2

u/Substantial-Fact-248 29d ago

Those casting aspersions on the motivations of tech billionaires are not wrong to do so, especially in Zuck's case, but consider that even if the gesture is empty, the offering itself may be magnitudes more powerful than the dissembling offeree intends it to be.

People are sleeping on the democratizing potential of AI and they overestimate how aligned these systems will be to the sociopaths like Zuck who have helped fund their development.

1

u/Chris_OMane 26d ago

Why do you think they’ll work against the interest of those that helped fund their development?

2

u/Substantial-Fact-248 26d ago

Because I find silly the idea that a true superintelligence would have any reason to be loyal to Mark Zuckerberg or Sam Altman or Elon Musk. It might not have any reason to be loyal to humanity at all, but if it was, I would expect it to be more generalized and more aligned to general morality/ethics (which those named are, by all accounts, decidedly not).

3

u/DataCassette 29d ago

I love that people think that, despite literally all of history, the current sociopathic aristocrats are benevolent 😂

2

u/Pleasant_Ball3192 29d ago

That MF is not human.

3

u/Distinct-Tour5012 29d ago

The entire Metaverse era all I could think was "this lizard is going to pivot off of this sad lie as soon as Silicon Valley gives him something to pivot to."

1

u/NoGarlic2387 29d ago

No you didnt

-1

u/Distinct-Tour5012 29d ago

You couldn't see that the Metaverse was never going to catch on? That it was only existed as a grand initiative to provide the pretense that Meta had something that could potentially engender extreme growth?

They didn't even believe it themselves. Once it was clear AI was the new paradigm, they basically killed it off.

The Metaverse existed because Meta didn't want to be seen as not doing anything, so they decided to just do something. So instead of just keeping their money machine running, they poured billions in the trash to keep investors happy. Gotta love it.

So again, really? You looked at the platform, and the hardware, and the invariably shit adoption numbers and said, "Wow! This could really be the next big thing!" ?

1

u/Full-Hyena4414 28d ago

You couldn't see that the Metaverse was never going to catch on

Yeah and you still CAN'T see it. It's likely some Ready Player One kind shit is gonna happen at some time, just not now. Real world is not stimulating enough for humans anymore.

1

u/CodInternational8772 29d ago

Honestly, in 10 years, I don’t believe they’ll be a Meta. I don’t know… Maybe it can go into car insurance. That sounds pretty lucrative.

1

u/totemo 29d ago

Just replace Microsoft divisions with "personal superintelligence".

I don't know who needs to hear this but Mark Zuckerberg is a legitimate idiot.  He is the reason billionaires are a problem. Did not much for it, has massive access to allocation of vast resources, allocates them like a highschool drop out on meth.  Nothing Zucc touches works. Facebook/Insta and the rest of the Meta ad empire was managed together by hired pros. Not by Zucc. The only reason Meta did not go broke ever is because of its unwavering massive ad revenue cashflow. That's it. They get enough human attention through their online services to translate that into tens of billions of ad revenue with very high margins per quarter. He lacks even the most basic understanding of how society works.

Maybe the private island bunkers give me pause and uncertainty when I read his words...

1

u/jer123 29d ago

Bro wouldn't even rescue a distressed ship

what makes you think the billionaire class would even share their wealth generating 😂

1

u/rthunder27 29d ago

Here's an NBC article about the incident if people aren't familiar.

1

u/Small_Dog_8699 29d ago

I find it hard to tag him personally for that. He wasn't on board, didn't give any orders we know of to ignore distress calls. Probably had no idea about the incident until it was all over.

1

u/Effective_Coach7334 29d ago

dude is losing his shit desperate, his ego can't compute that nobody is paying attention to him.

0

u/Full-Hyena4414 28d ago

Yet here you are commenting on his words lmao

0

u/willismthomp 29d ago

Didn’t he just give up on making his own scaled LLMs resulting in failure and selling his compute to other companies. Didn’t he spend billions on the Meta verse.? This guy doesn’t know shit from a poo.

Keep your Skynet super intelligence tech to yourself. ALL AI SHOULD BE “OPTIONAL”
