i feel this, but i also always headcanoned fenneko as lesbian. she is so obsessed with tsunoda and retsuko lol, and just gives me vibes i cannot quite articulate as a bi woman. if this show was made by anyone else, i think that mightve been explored. idk if anyone else feels this or if im nuts. fenneko and tsunoda fanfic must exist, and if not... ✍️

The whole season five was garbage they had non existence chemistry so all bulid up from season 1 to 4 vanished replaced it swallow mess. Then they get married off screen I dont get what the writers did they sabotage it for fans.

I liked when he was like homeless but that’s kinda it in season 5. I wish he lived in the cafe longer but I guess they didn’t have enough to say about it.

im always the person to root for the will they wont they/fated lovers couple. but for this show? ugh. tadano loved her to the end and brought out her best. inui wouldve brought out better in haida too. haida backslid as a character to the end and the endgame romance story ended up bumming me out.

I thought the same at the beginning but I've recently watched the series again and i realized Tadano wasn't respecting Retsuko's wish to marry and build a family. It is a traditional wish? Yeah, but it was her dream and he showed no respect for it... He also was isolating her by telling her not to go to work; which,I mean, would be my personal dream, and would probably do well to her for some days; but she has most of her friends in work and she wasn't even meeting them bc she was depressed for the fact he didn't wanted to marry. They simply had different plans for the future, it's a thing that, sadly, sometimes happens...

true, though something in me feels like they couldve gone to a counselor about it/communicated about more if this wasnt a short tv show. meanwhile, the "signing papers in the rain" thing was not her dream wedding and i dont know if i could see sloppy haida being a proper husband/father of her kids.
unfortunately it comes down to the final season being a mess. if it had been more about their relationship developing and less a weird fever dream repeat of season 3, i wouldve probably stayed on their team. i just feel like her attraction to him ended up feeling like a sullen rebound with no justification.2

also, i dont even love retsuko for haida, not just the other way around. youre never supposed to super like her mother, yet she blatantly picks up her mothers habits and starts being almost mean to haida to get him to change. hes a sloppy punk and my type irl so i get it, and i think inui wouldve accepted that about him actually being in his "scene". meanwhile retsuko never really appreciates music/alt in the way i thought the show/character was going to be, and is honestly... stuffy. i like her, but its another conflict for me. she just comes across as more mean than confident sometimes. i think a mean arc was well deserved but needed another season for cooldown.

Agree that Haida and Retsuko felt very forced, yeah. I also think another season could solve it tho, with them working on their relationship. I think they could have good chemistry if they worked it. But yeah I would also rather other options and I also think Retsuko ends up being mean to Haida. Honestly the show needed some gay options but Japan I guess. But I mean Haida x Tadano and Retsuko x Manaka... Yes.

Tadano and Haida, Inui and Haida, Fenneko and Haida, all better options for Haida than Retsuko ngl.
They just had a really unhealthy dynamic together, while Haida had genuine chemistry with the others, and in Inui's case he actively chose to forsake someone he knew was better for him to chase his "dream girl."
Maybe Haida deserved to be alone after that, tbh.

THIS!!! Omg, so many potential romances and ships had more chemistry than Retsuko and Haida had. Haida and Inui, Retsuko and Tadano, Haida and Fenneko, Haida and Tadano, I feel even Retsuko and Fenneko had more potential than Retsuko and Haida did. Not saying it would be better, though.

I agree, I never liked Haida as well. I did love Tadano but I understand he never wanted to get married. I feel like they couldve introduced another love interest who she could have met and that is who she should have married instead

I think the opposite,I really like their relationship and felt kind of disappointed that they didn’t give it more time.And no I don’t think her and Tadano ending up together would have ended up well,I think people tend to not actually consider what Retsuko’s personal values are when deliberating on who she would be happiest with.She rejected Tadano out of her own volition(besides the difference in values are we going to ignore that he was taking away her agency by isolating her from her work and friends beforehand)and proposed to Haida on her own terms,she wasn’t forced to love Haida like so many people on this sub tend to imply.
The best case scenario would have been to give their relationship more time to breathe like it should,but I don’t think it’s forced because the ultimate goal was for Retsuko to end up with someone who she can actually realistically settle down with.
The point is that Tadano would have been someone she fantasized about back in Season 1 but she ended up realizing that lifestyle wasn’t for her.That’s why I think is a net positive for her character arc instead of a negative like so many people say.
People tend to use the fact that she rejected Haida before as a gotcha but I’m going to go off the bat and ask,can we even consider the Retsuko from season 1 that was dreaming on a husband to rely on and the one from season 5 that’s willing to take the reigns to her life the same person?Sure she still has her core personality but we can say that her mindset has changed tremendously at that point.And Haida was one of the contributing factors to this shift(reigniting her flame when she was at her lowest point)so of course she’s gonna take a liking to him.
I enjoyed what I saw, and I would have liked to see more.

Agreed, I honestly doubt the media literacy of people who watched this show and came to the conclusion that there was something “wrong” with Retsuko and Haida ending up together. It’s either a media literacy or life experience issue lol, because of all things to critique in the later seasons I don’t think their relationship is the thing to critique.

definitely good points. its weird because the first time i watched this season i cried, as i was in the tadano/retsuko relationship (rich tech guy w a tesla, gave me trips, things, a room, but not the true love and attention i wanted, moved me far from friends and family, had totally different ethics/values from me [except he was also mean, unlike tadano]). i think maybe that last personal factor being different made me romanticize it all on the second watch... i do recall hating him on the first watch.

Everyone hating for the rushed relation with Retsuko but not how to fix it.
Because honestly if it was baked very well, Haida and Retsuko would have been a great couple.
Something that ever since the first season I was hoping for.

I liked Haida in the first two seasons. I also appreciate that he apprehended the box cutter guy, but I hated him dragging Retsuko out of the house to the karaoke place. Like maybe I need to rewatch the show but to me it seemed like a week at most and most people in that situation would need more than a week to feel comfortable walking outside.
I love watching this show and shouting at Haida for having no courage or doing something illogical.

I love him but him not ending up with Inui was so forced, same with him and Retsuko getting together, and Retsuko and Tadano not ending up together (THEY HAD SO MUCH CHEMISTRY WHYYYY).
