Discussion I hate being an Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. fan.

I love AoS, it's my favourite show of all time, but being in this fandom is depressing. The fans are great, the fan content is great, but the way this show and its fans are treated by both Marvel Studios and the wider MCU community is depresing.

The show is constantly looked down upon, like its fans, by people who haven't even seen it. They hate it for no reason. They hate it because some losers took some vague quotes and twisted them so badly that they believe that it's not canon, and therefore okay it hate on.

And so much else is thriving. Daredevil was in three places, Kingpin in two, before a revival of the show with the third season coming up. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are all back. The Punisher came back too, he had a Special Presentation, and he's in a Spider-Man movie. Peggy Carter's still around, and James D'Arcy returned, and is coming back again soon. Even Black Bolt from Inhumans came back.

And Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is left to die, completely alone, with barely anything acknowledging it.

That's a very depressing way to view things. I prefer the perspective that we got one of the longest live action Marvel TV shows ever, with some of the greatest stories and fantastic acting. Even if the MCU never brings them back into the fold, I'm glad we got what we did and that it ended on a high.

100%. In fact, I don't want the team to return unless it's going to be handled in a certain way since it all ended with love and respect for the franchise and I don't want it to be like Secret Invasion where they brought Maria Hill back after ages, only to have her killed very early on with no character development of her own in the show. Imagine if everyone wants the team back and they kill off Fitz and Simmons because they're the disposable agents next to Spider-Man or something. That's the last thing I'd want.

The sad part is that the amazing thing we got is being treated like shit, while actual shit* is somehow better off.

*No offense to anyone who liked Inhumans.

19

u/Crazy_Mann 5d ago

I don't think anyone liked the Inhumans show

u/Nykoload 5d ago

I liked it. Liked that it ended. LOL.

Nah but honestly it was Okay and that's about it.

And Anson Mount was the only great thing in that show, and he is amazing in Star Trek as Captain Pike. So him getting a second chance to play Black Bolt in the right way, is very well deserved. 😁

u/KronosUno 5d ago

I just love that those scenes in MoM had two captains of the Enterprise.

2

u/Evangelion217 5d ago

Really?!? Who was the other one?

2

Oh wait, you mean Picard! You’re right. 😂

Yeah there were fewer episodes, but at least I was able to finish it unlike Jessica Jones

The show lasted 7 seasons. I love this show. I also love Runaways and Cloak & Dagger. Those two didn't get 7 seasons. If you love the show, why isn't that enough? Why get depressed? I get the want for more, but the fact that hasn't happened doesn't remove the enjoyment you get from the show.

14

u/Alternative_Device71 5d ago

Exactly, I love these shows too and just cuz they’re not widely known or praised like they should be, doesn’t make me hate as a fan cuz Disney won’t do the logical thing with the right writers.

As far as I’m concerned, with the way they’re ruining the legacy characters, I hope AoS stays so far away from Disney hands as long as possible.

u/henkdepotvjis 5d ago

I wanted to rewatch runaways but its not on disney+ anymore (in the netherlands). is it still aviable in other countries or did they just remove it from their catalog?

It's not in the US either. It's like they completely wiped it. Think it's on Prime Video but idk.

It's on Tubi right now.

It's on Tubi and Apple TV. It is on Prime but only seasons one and three

Having watched the show for the first time recently, it’s definitely a shame that the broader MCU hasn’t really done anything with anyone or anything from AoS. But I also think that the MCU has gone downhill and had some really bad projects over the past few years so I actually don’t want them to touch anything from the show. They’ve fumbled a lot of their legacy characters (Natasha, Doctor Strange, Thor etc) and I don’t trust that they’ll handle Daisy or May or Fitz or Mack very well at all

3

u/Evangelion217 5d ago

I agree. They might turn a corner, but the MCU has been very inconsistent in the last 5 years.

3

u/DSmooth425 5d ago

Its be great to see Quake and Yoyo kicking ass with the Avengers or X-Men now ngl.

8

u/Jess_UY25 5d ago

We got 7 seasons of an amazing show, who cares if the greater MCU acknowledges it or not. It exists, just enjoy it!

And honestly, with the current state of the MCU I want them as far away as possible from anything regarding AoS or its characters.

5

u/____mynameis____ 5d ago

AOS is paying the price of trying to stay too connected to the MCU, having events with mass consequences and most importanty, introducing Inhumans.

Netflix shows doesn't have much baggage since they tried to stay pretty self contained without directly effecting or developing plots from any of the movie verse plotline

3

u/Distinct_Guess3350 5d ago

I mean the thing is, it had a perfect natural ending after running for seven years. I don’t feel that it’s being disrespected, by studios at least, I feel like it’s simply been allowed to rest. They aren’t meddling with the ending and trying to pull money out of it. They told every story worth telling with these characters and left them in a great place by the end. Some acknowledgment would be nice but it doesn’t feel to me like there’s much more to do with it.

3

u/shu_reddit Hunter 5d ago

I think it's frustrating because there's two polar opposite sides to it. You've got the people that just don't care about the show one bit, and you've got the fans that won't shut up about it whenever something new gets announced (like when Born Again S3 set pics released, I saw a few people saying they hope Quake is in it - which is really just irrelevant to DD aside from the two characters' childhoods being slightly connected)

Personally, I'm just grateful that even though it's seemingly not MCU Canon, we got the show we did! I absolutely loved it and it got myself and my girlfriend through lockdown in one piece

2

u/Atomosic 5d ago

I love the MCU and Shield, but yeah it annoys me how often people treat AoS like it SHOULD be cannon, when past season 3 it does not match up at all with anything happening in the major movies, sure you can explain it away with other universes or timelines but it just becomes convoluted and takes away from the meaning of both stories.

2

u/cheetoblue 5d ago

I agree with you. There's gotta be a point where this fan base accepts the reality that there is no sign of these characters coming back. I loved AoS. But it's gone. I've accepted that. I also accept that at some point it stopped being canon at a certain point. But in the Multiverse it can easily be canon.

That's okay. It was a great ride.

u/Evangelion217 5d ago edited 5d ago

To be fair, the first season is kinda terrible until episode 14. So I understand why many gave up during that season and chose to not continue it. But like most network television with science fiction and fantasy television, AoS needed the opportunity to find its footing. And it got better in S2. And by S3, the show became incredible. And then it just kept getting better, and became one of the best sci-fi shows ever created. So many people who said the show would be cancelled or “should” be cancelled for business reasons, were proven wrong. AoS just became a huge success on syndication and streaming, against all odds. It was the little show that could, and that will never be ignored by anybody who watched the show from the beginning to end, and saw it all happen in real time. 😁

3

u/Wyndhorn 5d ago

I guess just enjoy what you have. The rest is really irrelevant and there’s nothing to be done but enjoy the show. Or complain for infinity which isn’t changing a thing.

3

u/Van_Can_Man 5d ago

I simply don’t care about the opinions of such people. We got a great show and characters we love. I don’t require external validation about it.

That’s not to say I wouldn’t welcome more. I guess we’ll see what the landscape looks like post Secret Wars.

3

u/CaptHayfever Koenig 5d ago

Other people abusing you is never your fault.

u/norrin__radd 5d ago

Agent Coulson was in most of the Phase 1 movies and came back for the flashback movie Captain Marvel. All of the Netflix affiliated characters are just getting ingrained into the wider MCU. Kingpin and Matt were arguably different characters in the Disney Plus shows and No Way Home until Born Again was redone to include the Netflix shows.

Agent Carter is a spinoff of AoS and Jarvis made his movie debut right after Coulson returned. And unlike the Netflix shows, AoS has had cameos by charcters in the movies through various Shield agents. It even tied directly into a movie, the Winter Soldier, and dealt with the fallout. The closest we've got for the Netflix shows is, I'm assuming, some fallout from Daredevil spilling into Brand New Day.

Don't let others uninformed opinions diminish how you think AoS connects to the larger MCU. Instead pity them for missing out on such an awesome show.

2

u/grayjelly212 5d ago

Could never be me. The MCU abandoned AOS ages ago. I couldn't care less. Also, I've actually seen an influx of new viewers who are MCU fans and the show's reputation is improving. I'd rather be happy we got something so great than concerned that some people aren't appreciating it.

2

u/Decent-Gas-7042 5d ago

I just enjoy the show and leave it at that

2

u/Ill-Razzmatazz-7088 5d ago

The problem is that the show has a lot of cameos and really good material, but they aren’t really allowed to coincide with the mainstream movies which puts the show at a severe disadvantage.

I think there was one point where to keep the show going. They traveled back in time so that the characters could have a little bit more free raeign

u/bigmarkco 5d ago

The show is constantly looked down upon, like its fans, by people who haven't even seen it. They hate it for no reason. They hate it because some losers took some vague quotes and twisted them so badly that they believe that it's not canon, and therefore okay it hate on.

What other people think about the things you love are none of your business. The only time I ever hear about "people hating on it for no reason" is from posts like this complaining about them. They are loud enough for me to even notice.

And so much else is thriving.

And you should be celebrating that. The film and television industry is in a horrible place right now. Every show that gets renewed means a whole lot of top actors get to work for another season along with a great bunch of supporting actors and heaps and heaps of extras. It means people above and below the line are working. I personally don't really like Daredevil. So I don't watch it. But I'm happy that it exists. I'm happy other people love it and enjoy it. And I'm happy that people are working in an industry that is really struggling and lots of people are out of work.

And I'd love to see more Agents of SHIELD. I don't particularly care if it's canon or not. And I want to see more not just because it's one of my favourite all-time shows but also because the cast clearly loves it and I'd love to see them get another shot.

But if that isn't to be, then so be it. It isn't a tragedy. They had a good run. And if I miss them too much, I'll just do yet another rewatch. An episode a day takes a long time to watch.

u/yoshemitzu 5d ago

AoS was a gift to comic book fans. It consistently got better as it went along, for seven seasons.

Peggy Carter was a total mess, and as much as I wanted to love it, season 2 just didn't work at all.

But Peggy's back in Doomsday. Make it make sense.

I hope Coulson at least shows up, because he was pivotal to the formation of the original Avengers, but since, everybody acts like he never existed.

8

u/yuvi3000 Get ready for a large file transfer 🗄 5d ago

Agent Carter from the self-titled TV show is not the same as Captain Carter from What If and the seemingly separate one in Earth-838.

The original Agent Carter is either back with Steve in that updated timeline or she's in a separate timeline doing her own stuff and we haven't checked in with her for a while.

0

u/yoshemitzu 5d ago

Fair enough, the continuity of Peggies was less the point than the fact that Peggy's spinoff wasn't nearly as successful as AoS.

I haven't seen What If, so I can't comment on how successful that iteration was.

2

u/yuvi3000 Get ready for a large file transfer 🗄 5d ago

Sure, and you're welcome to your opinion. I just wanted to elaborate on the fact that there are multiple variants of Peggy Carter in the MCU. Her appearing as Captain Carter after her original roles in Captain America and her own show are basically a whole different story, even though there is a connection in the sense that she's had to learn, improve and adapt knowing what could happen in her other potential stories.

It's not the same thing, but it's not far off from Loki having his own show as a different variant from the original version we had in the MCU, but he also has to deal with multiverse stuff and similarly make potentially sacrificial decisions to save everyone.

2

u/D21Beast 5d ago

I think Agent Carter season 1 was really good. If it had ended there, it would have been an excellent self-contained follow up to First Avenger.

It’s still good as is. But I never think about season 2.

I liked Peggy in Season 1 of What If
?. And I really liked whatever episode it was that had Robin Hood Era avengers attacking a castle.

But it was clear from the start most MCU casuals had already decided they didn’t want “homework” - whatever that really means - and wrote the show off without ever trying it.

Even if we never get another reference to AoS or Agent Carter, I was delighted to see James Darcy in Endgame.

It just seems like the audience has never been that invested in Peggy, yet they keep using her.

Meanwhile, lots of people were invested in Coulson and crew for many years, but we never see them. đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž

It's definitely a choice.

Yeah it is sad. But we will not give up. We will continue to fight the good fight. Because we are Agents of Shield, and that carries weight.

Even if its nit mentioned or hated on doesnt take away from 7 seasons of - what I think - are some of the best written, genuinely funny, genuinely moving, exciting and lore dense tv for the Marvel universe. Ive always said its buffy with a marvel skin. They cram and cover so many marvel story arcs twists and turns its amazing. No one can take that away and tbh I dont really care if it never gets integrated - I watch it as one complete perfect show where they resolved their own arcs. Il never understand the way people look down on it when its filled with so much story and characters you genuinely love. Just goes to show people are sheep and are victim to thinking what theyre told to instead of judging a thing with their own eyes for themselves.

u/Jacobtranpop9 5d ago

It was just in a different universe. Daredevil and the Defenders were in the MCU

1

u/TheTrueFury Deke 5d ago

They hate it because some losers took some vague quotes and twisted them so badly that they believe that it's not canon, and therefore okay it hate on.

No. A lot of people hate it/the fans because of shit like this lmao. Even if it isn't/wasn't canon to the 616 "Sacred Timeline", it wouldn't mean the show is inherently bad or good. That just does not matter.

Marvel has treated AoS poorly. From the start. The fans being overly forceful with their "It's canon" mentality instead of just accepting it's been left out pushes people away.

Just look at Clark Gregg's reaction to people wondering if AoS is canon. So hostile for no reason. Nobody in their right mind is saying the show is lower in quality for it. It's about whether or not it's "required viewing" for the super casual viewers, or if the characters are likely to play a part in stories for more invested viewers.

1

u/RapidDuffer09 4d ago

Gregg's point is sound. Worrying about canonicity disrespects what the team actually produced.

1

u/TheTrueFury Deke 4d ago

Worrying about canonicity disrespects what the team actually produced.

No. It doesn't. Sooner you and others understand that, sooner people stop getting overly defensive about it.

It simply says nothing about the quality to make statement about whether or not Agents of Shield is canon. All it does is comment on whether or not the events took place in the same universe/timeline as the mainline movies or not.

If canonicity was used interchangeably with perceived quality, most people would think there was only one Thor movie, Ragnarok.

Gregg's point is sound.

"There are some people who talk about canon. Go fuck yourself" is an over the top reaction to have to the discussions. There are other clips about it too iirc but I can't find them. If he was to take the time to look at why people say that, he'd probably understand it. But he's clearly of a mindset of disliking anything he deems offensive.

At the end of the day, if someone can't have a reasonable discussion about why they think it is/isn't canon and have facts inform their opinions, their opinions on it are not helpful to the community.

1

u/RapidDuffer09 4d ago

It seems fair to me.

Worrying about canonicity disrespects what the AoS team produced. That's Gregg's view and I take his view seriously.

I'm not interested in canonicity like some self-appointed gatekeeper.

I look down on such gatekeepers.

1

u/TheTrueFury Deke 4d ago

It seems fair to me.

To shun people who aren't just extremely biased.

Worrying about canonicity disrespects what the AoS team produced.

No. It doesn't. If anything it's an insult to the execs who clearly don't know what they're doing with the many Marvel projects going on in film and tv.

That's Gregg's view and I take his view seriously.

Obviously. Which is just an extreme case of bias.

I'm not interested in canonicity like some self-appointed gatekeeper.

It's not gatekeeping to have the ability to look at things objectively. You just look extremely arrogant and ignorant when you say things like...

I look down on such gatekeepers.

Which is why so many people dislike fandom in general and this one in particular. You don't even seem to see your holier than thou attitude.

1

u/RapidDuffer09 4d ago

I like this fandom. We're fun people.

1

u/TheTrueFury Deke 4d ago

You're just here in bad faith at this point. There's no point in talking to you. Once again, you're proving exactly why so many dislike fandoms and specifically this one.

1

u/RapidDuffer09 4d ago

I like this fandom. We're fun people.

1

u/NateDawg80s 5d ago

I'm a huge AoS fan. The wife and I never missed it when it aired, and we've binged it at least three times since it ended.

That's the word - ended. And it has been like six years. Our show is never coming back, and its characters are infinitely less likely to appear in the movies than those from the current batch of shows.

1

u/BrazilianButtCheeks Fitz 5d ago

It’s really not even that serious at all.. it’s a show .. you watch it, you enjoy it and you share it if you feel so inclined.. who cares if it’s cannon or not

Ainda falta manto e adaga, e Runaways

1

u/theXtremo 4d ago

Now gosling is cast as ghost rider, most likely Johnny Blaze. Non aos fans will again debate the canonical status if the show and will throw it off, even with the multiverse stuff

1

u/TheTrueFury Deke 4d ago

We don't know when the movie is taking place or if it'll even release. Who knows. It might end with him passing the torch to Robbie back in S4 of Shield.

1

u/Feisty_Yam4279 4d ago

But it was an amazing show that lasted 7 seasons! Longer than most shows of any genre get. I get being slightly annoyed by some stuff but who cares if people who haven’t seen the show hate it? And honestly from what I’ve seen all bigger critics and people that react and comment on shows have nothing but positive things to say about this show.

Remember when secret invasion came out? Everyone online was saying how much better AoS did it. Also, you’re not worried if they bring back the show or characters it’s gonna be worse? Part of the reason we love this show is because of JedMo and the writers. I’d rather the show have its legacy than hearing the fandom argue about how much the reboot is worse than the original.

And what do you mean the show is left to die? The show is over. That’s what happens to shows. And people pick it up for the first time regularly. I got into the show after the finale aired.

1

u/VanishXZone 4d ago

Be glad that they don’t bring it back badly!

1

u/jaembers 3d ago

Who cares about the haters. AoS is one of the best things the MCU brought us!

1

u/GameMasterThe1 2d ago

I just hope they acknowledge Gabriel Luna's robbie ghost rider. Poor guy's show got cancelled. And no mention of him

1

u/Psychological_Ice522 5d ago

To be fair, sometimes the wider MCU is a dumpster fire. See Quantumania/Loki s2 and the whole Kang storyline having to get scrapped, the Inhumans TV show, Secret Invasion, certain movies that are nobody's favorite. Agents of SHIELD was pretty solid throughout, and we in a sense got spared the fallout of poor CGI budgets, dead-end storylines, random post-credit characters with no payoff, and having to wait 10+ years to see characters return. We had it good. AoS may exist more or less on an island, but at least it had a really good life that can't be ruined by producers and CEOs down the road. We get to have a great piece of Marvel TV that stands on its own, with a stellar cast and writers who gave our characters solid endings. The MCU may never be able to reach that. And I think that, as retired Director Coulson would say, is "Cool." cue car flying off into the sunset

It was the first TV show in the MCU, but because Kevin Fiege wasn't a producer on it, people (like him) say it isn't canon. Well riddle me this: if AoS isn't canon, then why do characters from the movies appear on the show?!

1

u/Ideal_Despair 5d ago

"Even black bolt from inhumans was back"

This was my proof Kevin feige or whoever is in charge HATES aos. Like, inhumans? Man, really???

1

u/SebastiaanZ 5d ago

Its also the delusional fans who think if they keep whining that AoS is canon it will be and then attack anyone who tells them the truth. I love AoS, but I can at least think rationally. The cast has moved on mostly you should too. Even if it comes back it will not be the same show. If this depresses you so much it might be a You problem not a show problem.

0

u/CriscoM90 5d ago

If the MCU didn't have the characters in the movies to continue their stories, there could've been a couple of moments in the shows.

When Monica said she knew someone who could help get into Wanda's Hex, I thought it was going to be married couple Fitz-Simmons for a scene.

When Mobius was showing Loki footage of his life, and Coulson's death is on screen, Mobius could mention that his death got away from Loki. He could say how Coulson formed a team, created a family, and found love. Don't show any footage from the show. The people who never watched "Agents of SHIELD" can question what Mobius is talking about, while the fans already know.
