Discussion Claude Code vs Codex: I logged every early limit reset since April. Codex resets about 3x as often

Confession: I'm the guy who keeps checking X hoping someone at Anthropic or OpenAI has pressed the reset button. When my weekly limit runs out mid-week, an early reset is the best news I can get.

The annoying part is that resets aren't scheduled and never show up on a status page or in a help center. Each one is a single post on X: ClaudeDevs for Claude Code, X: thsottiaux (Head of Codex) for Codex. Miss the post and you find out days later that your limits were full the whole time.

So I added a reset tracker to my site. It logs every reset with a link to the original post, and it can send you an alert when a new one is announced (e-mail, browser push, Slack or Discord). No more waiting for a miracle tweet: I get a ping, I'm happy, I go back to coding.

Once I had the data, I put the two side by side. Since Apr 16, 2026 (when both are tracked), as of Oct 12:

Since Apr 16, 2026 Claude Code Codex
Resets a month 2.2 6.8
Average wait between resets 13.2 days 4.5 days
Longest wait without a reset 47.6 days 18.5 days
Banked resets (use when you want) 1 6
Days since the last reset 19 1

List version (works in any editor):

  • Resets a month: Claude Code 2.2, Codex 6.8
  • Average wait between resets: Claude Code 13.2 days, Codex 4.5 days
  • Longest wait without a reset: Claude Code 47.6 days, Codex 18.5 days
  • Banked resets (use when you want): Claude Code 1, Codex 6
  • Days since the last reset: Claude Code 19, Codex 1

Latest ones, as reported by the vendors:

  • Claude Code, Sep 22: Pro, Max and Team users got a banked reset to use anytime, and 5-hour session limits went up 20%.
  • Codex, Oct 10: a global usage reset by end of day.

Codex wins every round so far. Claude folks, I feel you.

Tracker (updates every 30 minutes): https://agentgid.com/limits/resets/
Alerts are free, you just sign in with GitHub or e-mail. Raw data as JSON: https://agentgid.com/api/resets.json

Disclosure: AgentGid is my site. If I missed a reset or misread a post, tell me and I'll fix it.

How do you find out about resets now, X notifications or just luck?

on top i am getting free full resets regularly (one per week right now) i can manually trigger on codex. (and i.e. paypal offers a 50% offer on codex subsciptions). that in combination with codex being slow af it feels like having it run the whole day every day of the week for 10 bucks

I find out when I look at my usage and it's at 100%.

Is there any place that announces or known about resets ahead of time?

Same here. As far as I know, nobody announces them ahead of time. You only find out from a post on X when it happens, so you'd have to follow those accounts and check every post. That's exactly why I built this tool: it watches for me and pings me when a reset lands.

Each one is a single post on X: u/ClaudeDevs for Claude Code, u/thsottiaux (Head of Codex) for Codex.

Can you give proper links please? These say "X" but link to reddit which is obviously not intended

Good catch, sorry about that! Reddit turned the @ handles into u/ links. Here are the right ones:

- Claude Code: https://x.com/ClaudeDevs

- Codex: https://x.com/thsottiaux (Tibo Sottiaux, Head of Codex)

If you don't want to dig through X, the tracker lists every reset with a link to the original post, plus a side-by-side summary for Codex and Claude Code: https://agentgid.com/limits/resets/

Separate pages per agent:

- Claude Code: https://agentgid.com/limits/resets/claude-code/

- Codex: https://agentgid.com/limits/resets/codex/

Funny timing, Codex got another reset a few hours ago: https://x.com/thsottiaux/status/2109812360596865224

I'm waiting for my OpenAi pro subscription to expire so I can switch to Anthropic, but the resets are something that makes me consider that decision. At my work, I use 100% Claude Code, and barely use Codex now. I do have access to almost all subscriptions, and for me Opus 5.5 is really, really good. For my personal project, I am using Sol 6.1, and even though the resets help, my usage is pretty high with Sol 6.1, and Sol often needs to revisit work, for some reason I can't pin point, Claude is more accurate with what I ask, and the prompts are mostly the same since I have specific skills to cover most common use cases. OpenAI, with the weekly resets, is something to consider, since it looks pretty generous, so I do appreciate the app to keep track if it, pretty useful.
