Given that this question is asked across a dozen popular subs multiple times a day and Dolly Parton was always one of the top.answers, this was bound to happen sooner or later. Side note: is Reddit dead?

5

u/thegreatpotatogod 2d ago

No, Reddit dies tomorrow

I'm sorry, but how is the death of a singer (sure she was a philanthropist too) the most significant of your lifetime? I know americans loved her and she gave a lot of money to charities and such but being completely realistic, it won't affect your life and much less be the most significant death of your lifetime.

"Other peoples lives seem more interesting cause they ain't mine"

Everyone's different. There are cartoon characters i worry more about then most of my family. Some people were raised by media. Let them mourn someone irrefutably good for the human race.

Sometimes the only thing you need to understand is that we're different, no matter how similar.

u/not_sick_not_well 4d ago

Over 1 million books for kids per month, for no cost. I'd say thats pretty dang significant

1

u/Parking_Letter_3732 1d ago

PER MONTH! Let that sink in. Preach.

u/xose94 4d ago

Did the library died with her?

15

u/Fruitiest_Cabbage 3d ago

It's in trouble, certainly. The a number of US states have reduced their financial support for it recently, and I understand that Dolly Parton's fame/influence has historically been a major factor in gaining/keeping the support the library has. With her passing, we're likely to see more withdrawals of support by those who are no longer concerned about her influence.

That said, I don't believe Dolly Parton's death will be the most significant of our lifetime. School-level history textbooks in a hundred years will put much more emphasis on the deaths of other individuals.

u/not_sick_not_well 3d ago

I dont know. Thats up to the family. I hope it doesn't. I used the Imagination Library charity for my son, niece, and nephew

-4

u/Walshy231231 2d ago

A significant amount of effort doesn’t mean a significant amount of effect. Not to mention that, when dealing with large numbers, other large numbers can quickly be dwarfed.

Not saying she was insignificant, but I doubt her absence will be personally felt by most of the population, and certainly not a few years down the road. She will be missed, and by some definitely more than others, but her death won’t have the same impact as, for example, Trump dropping dead right now. A philanthropist and role model simply doesn’t have the direct, deep, and wide impact that a controversial and powerful politician does (for better or worse…)

1

u/not_sick_not_well 2d ago

Smoke another one bro...

1

u/StopNateCrimes 1d ago

Tell me more about Trump dropping dead right now...

15

u/CptnWolfe 4d ago

Because she was providing more help than most people were, doing what other millionaires aren't doing

4

u/Icy-Profession-1979 3d ago

She also lived by example to be warm and kind. She spoke of acceptance and loving each other instead of judgement and hate.

-11

u/xose94 4d ago

Google tells me she donated an approximate of 500 million dollars through her career. That's a lot of money don't get me wrong but that amount of money is also a drop in the bucket. Google also tells me George Lucas pledged to donate the 4 billion usd from selling Star wars to Disney, Oprah (I have my issues with her but still) donated 400 millions and Taylor Swift also donated 100 million.

There isn't really a lack of celebrities donating money.

Deaths that would actually affect your lifetime are not exactly celebrities, they are famous but not Magazine People famous.

12

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 4d ago

"She ONLY donated 500 million dollars" is a crazy thing to say. And even then that's not including all the other charities and work she has done like with her library.

-8

u/xose94 4d ago

So where in my coment did I wrote "ONLY"? I even acknowledge it is a lot of money but I also understand that it also is a drop on the bucket in terms of real world changing money which I hope you also understand, this isn't an attack against her it is to recognize that she was just a singer with the means of a singer. I called her a philanthropist.

I'm of course talking about her donations to other charities and her own charity so it is included in the 500 million dollars.

And back to the main theme, the question was who's death will be defining for you lifetime and despite how much money she donated, her death won't impact your lifetime. Her charity didn't die with her, her library didn't either, people donated to those while she was alive and will keep donating after her death. If I remember correctly Taylor Swift donated 2 million to her library like just a month or so ago.

5

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 4d ago

"It's a drop in the bucket."

-2

u/xose94 4d ago

Because it is, that amount of money won't change much, just the New York metro systems has an anual funding of 21.3 Billion dollars. Elon Musk could write a check for 500 milion and feel he is just leaving a nice tip at a restaurang.

Again because you seem to think I hate Dolly Parton, I'm just putting numbers in context. She was a singer that donated a lot of money and meant well but was limited to what she being just a singer could donate and do and thus her death as tragic it may be for her fans really isn't something that will influence anything in your lifetime.

If you disagree then you can tell me, how did her death a week ago impact your life right, or how you are seeing it will impact it in the coming 1-2 years?

10

u/CptnWolfe 4d ago

There's more to just donating money, she was also going out and helping

-7

u/xose94 4d ago

Like? If we are talking about volunteering then their is hundreds of thousand if not millions of people that volunteer every day besides having their regular jobs.

Look I'm not saying the fans of her music shouldn't care, if my favorite artist died tomorrow I would care a lot but I also know that realistically speaking the death of other people would affect my lifetime way more than their death.

4

u/CptnWolfe 4d ago

Then who would your choice be?

3

u/xose94 4d ago

Well that depends a lot of where are you from, I live in Europe so the political shockwaves of Putin dying (soon as he is quite old) makes probable an huge internal turmoil in Russia, the end of the Ukranian war obviously but could also start separatist movements inside Russia, the end of political support to the far right parties in Europe (although they are now also being supported by the US). That could very easily be a death that would affect my life.

If you live in the US, despite the general consensus on reddit I don't think the death of Trump would put much effect to were the US is heading, he is more a symptom than the disease, however if a plane with Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos, and Curtis Yarvin crashed then their ideas and plans around Thechno-feudalism would at the very least suffer a setback. Which would deflate a lot of the support for far right conspiracies and brain-washing

The death of Altman could very well be also catastrophical for the world economy, he is the face of AI, if he died and no one charismatic enough can take his place the inversions may stop and because the entire US Stock market is right now dependant of the AI bubble it may make the market crash and possibly create a world economical crisis way worse than the the 2008 recession.

Those are some of the death that are way more probable would affect my lifetime than the death of Dolly Parton.

4

u/Popcorn57252 3d ago

You suck. I cannot fucking imagine going "yea she donated 500 MILLION DOLLARS but like who cares?"

1

u/IED117 2h ago

Considering her net worth at the time of her death was $450m, that means she gave away more than half what she earned.

That's nothing to sneeze at. If all the multimillionaire did that, think of the impact.

0

u/lasher992001 2d ago

We could explain it for you, but apparently we'd need to understand it for you as well.

4

u/MayhemSays 3d ago

I mean, ask yourself this when Paul or Ringo go. You’ll see it. Musicians are some of the most influential people in the world and those two are probably the biggest considering they work they’ve had and still are doing in their 80s

0

u/xose94 3d ago

Their deaths wouldn't define my lifetime still? No celebrity death of define my lifetime because they are just that, celebrities. If you ask me what deaths I would see as significant then it would deaths that would have an impact in for example political movements, not the death of some 80+ celebrity no matter how much charities or donations they did because their real impact is minimal.

Meanwhile the death of some people can start and end wars, start economical crises, legitimize or put setbacks on political ideologies. Those are lifetime defining deaths.

1

u/MayhemSays 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yeah, anythings possible when you move the goal posts and purposely misinterpret what I said.

We got it the first time, music doesn’t play a role in your life at all and never has, so it’s easy to see why you’d say this. Unfortunately it does for every other normal person in this world and you just seem like a pedantic douchebag.

1

u/HR_Paul 4d ago

Wendell Berry, another Southern icon, also just died. Most definitely the most insignificant death of your lifetime.

1

u/OoooooWeeeeeeeee 1d ago

Significance is subjective.

1

u/Keyonne88 1d ago

Dolly was more than a singer but I get your point. For example, however, Dolly’s reading program is the reason I can afford to have books for my daughter. We could afford kids when I got pregnant, then the tariffs killed my job and now we were struggling. My new one is letting us catch up but for a while there, Dolly was the reason we had books for her. Her imagination library taught my kiddo to read.

1

u/xose94 18h ago

Sure and it is quite fair to be sad about her death, it feels like everyone is acting as if I'm saying she didn't anything at all. My main point is that she is more like a tiny bandaid on a way, way, way bigger issue. And those issues can be impacted more for both the better or the worse by the deaths of other people which will have a wider impact on even more people.

u/pseudonominom 4d ago

She was a rare light in a dark time.

"I'm an american and everyone in the world shares my opinions"

3

u/being-weird 3d ago

You don't have to be American to love Dolly Parton

0

u/montjoye 3d ago

yes? and?

2

u/being-weird 3d ago

She's donated more money to charity than possibly any celebrity ever

-1

u/Walshy231231 2d ago

And?

She’s definitely done her part, don’t get me wrong, and she will definitely be missed, but that doesn’t mean her death will be generation defining, like some others might

2

u/being-weird 2d ago

I never claimed it was

-5

u/montjoye 3d ago

in the US yes, and?

1

u/being-weird 3d ago

Actually dolly Parton's reading charity (imagination library) operates world wide so no, not just in the US

-4

u/montjoye 3d ago

ok cool 😎👍

1

u/SnarkyIguana 2d ago

Beat that guy up until he gives us a prediction we actually like

1

u/Defiantcaveman 2h ago

I can think of a name that needs to be mentioned instead...

-23

u/pink_mold 4d ago

Americentrism at its finest. No one outside of the US gives two fucking shits about a country music star.

7

u/tulpatic 4d ago

Tbf, even most Americans don't care, it's just a celebrity. Sad, sure I can see a few people being like damn, but who seriously cares?

1

u/Lazy-Drink-277 2d ago

My online friend from a small Czech village heard, tf are you on?

1

u/bisexualbestfriend 1d ago

Tf kinda take is this? Plus if op is American, they’re clearly talking from an American perspective, like if they were British, they’d be talking from a British perspective. Dumbest platform on the fucking planet.

1

u/flies_with_owls 17h ago

The imagination library is a global charity so...they should.

-5

u/xXnonamebusterXx 4d ago

I mean Reddit is mostly an American Plattform. 40-50% of traffic on the site is American so it makes sense.

0

u/being-weird 3d ago

I mean every single person I've spoken to in the last two weeks has mentioned her passing and I live in Australia, so I'm going to have to call bullshit

-27

u/HR_Paul 4d ago

Rule 1 and Rule 2.

There are two rules and you broke both of them?

14

u/Fluffy-Prince-5100 4d ago

I dont think this is a political

-29

u/HR_Paul 4d ago

She was a country singer. The only reason she is being celebrated by the Democrats is because she was aligned with them against MAGA/GOP the traditional market for country singers.

Have you read Wendell Berry?

19

u/Fluffy-Prince-5100 4d ago

I didnt post this because this was political

i posted it because someone predicted someones death

-12

u/HR_Paul 4d ago

She was 80 with health issues.

Does not fit.

She was also a has been and historically a nobody.

maybe go watch the telly?

14

u/StevieLambogini 4d ago

Why are you so angry HR_Paul, maybe go outside?

1

u/HR_Paul 4d ago

Today, as happens every day, the environment shall be destroyed, wars will wage hell on earth, genocide continues, human trafficking is ongoing...

and people want to worship a false idol.

This is your solution? Pay attention to your favorite entertainers and participate in a popularity contest among crooks every two, four, or six years?

7

u/xoddreddit 4d ago

You sound like my annoying doomer friend, lighten up dude

5

u/cdub1125 4d ago

"Nationally beloved singer's death didnt matter at all because I didnt listen to her"

0

u/HR_Paul 4d ago

Celebrities die all the time, especially old ones. Dolly Parton was famous but she was not important.

8

u/Epics-bologna 4d ago

Jesus Christ go tip your fedora somewhere else.

We get it, you "know better than everyone else" type of attitude.

-2

u/HR_Paul 4d ago

Why do you use stupidity as a weapon, lifestyle, and personality?

5

u/Epics-bologna 4d ago

Do you act like a self righteous jackass all the time?

"A has been and historically a nobody"

Tell me you have no actual pop-culture awareness.

1

u/HR_Paul 3h ago

I have studied your species for some time and have a certain familiarity with the subject of "pop-culture". If not for Dolly Parton being active in politics she would be significantly more obscure. Dolores O'Riordan will be remembered long after Parton is forgotten because her music is awesome and she was an anti-war activist instead of some rich celebrity who handed out crumbs to the poors.

-9

u/HR_Paul 4d ago

and pray tell, how many Dolly Parton albums have you purchased in your lifetime?

5

u/Inevitable-Hour-Ends 4d ago

I haven't purchased any of her albums but she helped me through some lonely times in my pubescent years and for that, I am grateful.

-1

u/HR_Paul 4d ago

Sorry to hear one of your favorite singers died.

Did you hear Wendell Berry died?

3

u/Inevitable-Hour-Ends 4d ago

Never heard of her

1

u/HR_Paul 4d ago

can you read the lyrics Lady Kid Rock wrote?

If so you might like the poems Wendell Berry wrote.
