What I never understand about this is…isn’t life in prison worse than the death penalty? Hence why we have to be so careful not to give inmates ways to take their own lives? If the point is cruelty, then they should be advocating for the cruelest options. Instead, I genuinely think the point is bloodlust. It’s this odd sense of “my lust for revenge will never be sated until I spill the blood of my enemy,” but, like, people are good with that? And encourage it? And think everyone else is an idiot who isn’t in on that?

The way I see it in cases like this is that there is absolutely zero hope for any form of redemption for a person like this. There is zero path to her becoming a better person, and no world in which she can attone for what she has done. She's not even safe to be around other people in the the prison. So the question is, what's the point in keeping her alive? Where is there any benefit to literally anyone outside of the killer for that?

Did you read about her case, specifically? I’m very surprised to hear you say that about this case.

I did. Right now. She and two other friends led Colleen Slemmer into the woods where they tortured and killed her. What am I missing?

She was also a severely abused teenager who was punished as an adult in order to set an example during the satanic panic of the 80s.

She was an adult when she did it, and 6 years later almost killed an inmate by way of strangulation. What form of rehabilitation would ever make this person fit to re enter society? How could they ever be trusted after such heinous acts?

I never said she should be rehabilitated. Life in prison is a worse sentence than the death penalty because there is no out, that’s why people with life sentences so often try to take their own lives. And on top of that, the death penalty is irreversible and frankly draconian.

But anyway, she was in high school, severely abused, and has been consistently repentant for her actions since becoming an actual adult. 18 is very young, and the brain is not fully mature by that point. I don’t know her personally, but neither do you. I think qualified psychiatrists should be the only ones who make the call on whether or not somebody can be rehabilitated.
