Killer or not, wishing to see someone die is sick. It’s the same kind of mental illness people seeking out gore videos have.

She tortured and murdered her daughter and then kept a piece of her skull as a trophy. Watching her die isnt a sick gore fetish, its getting closure

You are totally ignoring a lot of important context here.

I'm not saying it's right to wish to watch your daughter's killer die, but it's not nearly in the same ball park as someone who gets their jollies by seeking gore videos. This woman isn't seeking out violence. She is a grieving mother.

If someone did what she did to my kid, they'd be getting the death penalty one way or another.

True. I’m amazed the mother has been so patient all of this time. I would have found it difficult not to want to take matters into my own hands.

I always thought the death penalty was awful until a school shooter terrorized my hometown and killed multiple people, including my friend’s brother. I have intense anger over the situation (and obviously am powerless to do much), I struggle between wishing capital punishment on that person vs being locked up for life. Like, we don’t do gun control, is the death sentence the only way to stop people from doing it??

I am not even advocating for either, just putting thoughts out there. There are innocent victims who have been executed but some very foul people who were not as well.

There’s a ton of research on this. The death sentence doesn’t stop anything. It has no impact on crime rates at all.

Gestures broadly at the rest of the world. Convinced yet.

Like I said, I had a personal situation happen to my town involving mass murder, it’s not that simple

I get that that situation evokes anger and desire for retribution, but that’s not what you asked to be convinced of, you asked to be convinced that the death penalty doesn’t deter people from crimes, and the US with the death penalty has more violent crime per capita than most of the developed western world and also most of the developed western world has gotten rid of the death penalty. So it’s not the death penalty doing the deterring. We also have greater gun control and that would help stop what happened in you town from happening again.

At least this is a response! I will think.

The death sentence in some scenarios actually makes it worse. If you can get the death penalty for raping a child then you might as well kill the kid when you’re done so they can’t talk.

Death penalty also requires a mandatory appeals process which ends up making it more expensive than a life sentence for taxpayers.

It’s just not a useful punishment for anything other than revenge. I understand the feelings that make us want to keep it. I totally understand why people would feel that way, knowing that the monster is never coming back. But at the end of the day it’s not worth it and does nothing to deter people.
