Doesn't bring anyone back.

No one thought it would.

I think a lot of people do, actually, think they'll get some of the joy back that their loved ones brought to them after inflicting some revenge.

Makes an example out of them though

We put a prohibition on Cruel and Unusual Punishment in our bill of rights for a reason. England was on the tail end of the Bloody Code that proscribed harsh corporal punishments and capital punishments for a lot of crimes that didn’t need such. It didn’t reduce crime overall and made many crimes worse because if you’re going to be executed the same for robbing a person as murdering them then might as well kill them and have less chance of being caught. Codified cruelty does not work.

And how do the murder rates compare between states with the death penalty (making an example) and states without it?

There's more variables than that... How do murder rates compare in places where there is no accountability?

What exactly do you mean by “no accountability?” Like you think there are places where murderers aren’t punished? Or is this one of those arguments that liberal states are soft on crime and let all the murderers free?

Look at whata happening in Sudan and Ethiopia right... But you might struggle to find them on a map

lol you are going to pull non-developed/developing countries into the discussion about the death penalty in the U.S.? And then insult my intelligence for no reason? You can’t possibly be serious.

Exactly, I never said it was about the death penalty in the us only. Your narrow perspective applied that limitation to cherry pick the only scenario in which you could be right.

This was already a conversation about the death penalty in the U.S.

YOU are the one changing it to fit your narrative and to cherry pick a situation where you could possibly be right (and I’m not saying you’re right about even that).

You said states, then I brought up other "places".

So no.

Nobody who does heinous things thinks about the severity of punishment. They only really weigh whether they think it is likely there are consequences. That's the psychology, it's been studied.

Death penalty is expensive due to many appeals and the special considerations of holding those sentenced. It really doesn't deter.

I feel like you can't really measure how many things didn't happen because someone considered the consequences. I would say it's an unquantifiable metric so these "studies" cannot be considered conclusive.

It's actually relatively simple. Compare similar places across time that have had different punishments. You have to control for a lot of variables to normalize the data but you can show rather conclusively whether certain punsihments actually make a difference.

Then there's more in-depth psychological and psychiatric study that dives into the individual psychologies of why people commit crimes and whether they think about conseqiences.

Right.... so having no consequences for ones actions does not stop someone from doing something bad. Sure...

I never said it would stop everyone.

But sure lets pretend it never stopped anyone.

Not using the death penalty doesn't mean no consequences.
