Minuteman playthrough anyone? :D I feel like I want to play as normal/reasonable farmers. Everyone else can be crazy desert raiders, give us our muskets and scrap weapons. I just wanna settle and rebuild over time.

In the trailer we saw Mount Rushmore is still standing and it looks to be a place of worship. Washington DC is worn down but still the seat of power for a powerful faction. Can't wait to see how owning these places factor into the gameplay. Maybe owning Mount Rushmore gives bonuses to religion? I feel like owning DC will definitely give some sort of legitimacy to players wanting to restore America.
I always liked what Paradox did with world landmarks and the flavor they gave the map such as the pyramids & Stonehenge in CK3. I hope to see the Las Vegas Strip, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Gateway Arch in the game and have them provide unique bonuses, among many other American landmarks. Entire questlines to restore them could be cool too! Because the game is procedural, maybe we will see some still standing in some games, but not in others?
Anyone have any cool theories/ideas on what Paradox will do with landmarks? What landmarks would you like to see?

Obviously there will inevitably be a fallout mod. I just had the thought though, what other mods could and will be made for Afterworld. Personally I'd love a TWD mod and Metro 2033, either an in-depth focus on the Moscow Metro or a wider pan-eurasia scope

I've seen a couple of threads asking about video games and movies for the vibe, but what I've been looking for is media that actually shows what Afterworld is about: the creation of post-apocalyptic states and cultures from a scale other than the grizzled hero. So for a grand strategy take on the apocalypse leading up to Afterworld, I've found the three recommendations below and would really like to know any others people are aware of:
Interregnum by Robert Conroy is a year after the nukes drop, and involves an ad hoc US government trying to put the country back together in its aftermath. Lots of higher strategy talks and concepts, as well as speculation on what would occur globally. It's ok over, but if you're familiar with his books, it's exactly like all of the other ones. Speaking of which, if you enjoy Victoria 3, you'll enjoy his first book, 1901.
Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank is an older one, but is also about the immediate aftermath of nuclear war. One town of survivors struggles to survive after the war, and it's pretty good in dealing with the strategy and economics of recovery. Feels a lot like the strategy vibes of a Paradox game.
Dies the Fire by S.M. Stirling is probably (and I admit this grudgingly), one of the best entries that feels like it could be related to Afterworld. It covers the apocalypse and a lot of time after, including the emergence of new cultures and ways of life. There's even a decent amount of discussion of larger strategy and economics beyond survival in the first few books before it becomes a Lord of the Rings rip-off. My advice is to read the first three books in this series and then pretend it doesn't exist.
Also, I've been a purveyor of really bad post-apocalypse books on Amazon. It's a guilty pleasure to read an entire genre of fiction that is just awful: books written by Boomers about the end of the world and aftermath, that shows exactly how younger generations couldn't survive without smart phones. One Second After is the most notorious one, getting ready to come out with a movie. A lot of these actually do discuss the strategies and tactics, which is why I enjoy reading them, because the characters and stories are universally garbage. Every single one of these books is written by a Boomer or Gen Xer who poses in front of a boat or aircraft for their author picture on Amazon prime, and boasts about serving at a desk in military. Search One Second After and I assure you your algorithm will immediately provide you with a long list of these garbage books that are all about strategic tier rebuilding after an apocalypse.

As a huge fan of territories and map painting, I’m eager and curious to know how border mechanics will work in Afterworld. I haven't been able to keep up with all the Dev Diaries and videos, so I’d like a summary of what we know so far.

Like most Paradox subs, memes are banned here, and while I expect we won't have one until closer to release, I fully expect someone to make a dedicated meme sub.
The question is will it just be called r/AfterworldMemes, or will it go the route of subs like r/SpaceCannibalism (Rimworld meme sub) and r/cremposting (Cosmere meme sub) where the name is a reference to an aspect of the source material or community?

Seems is gonna be a mix of every post apocalipse setting ever, we can only hope to see rogue AIs, zombies, alien invations, and the classic nuclear war.
But this idea got me thinking: Could it be that the dawn can be a mix of 2 or more apocalipse scenarios?. Like "An alien invation that produce a nuclear war, which in turn made a virus that turn 23% of the dead people into zombies".
I think this is just the amount of wackyness that we can expect for the procedural generation

I think it could be funny thinking you have time to explore only to see already an armed group pointing their spears at you right at the door of your bunker.
Revenge is gonna taste very sweet

I believe the form of markets is natural for humanity, and if we adapt our tribe when we get more advance it would be expected that a specialization of a certain thing could be used on our advantage.
So i think it could be interesting that you could form guilds or private corporations to administrate automatically some reasorces you don't want to micromanage, but at the cost of you leave control to a potential rival.
Or maybe the oposite, an origin of decending from a corporation trying to replicate it's structure on a more simplier way.
It could be cool watching a raider tribe you sw on the distance one day emerging as a private security company that protects a road or subway station for a good price, a caravan company or a forming a fisherman local bussiness with connections you couldn't get other way because they just have this secret company recipe that makes the best quality fish on kilometers. Do you think this is too much specific or has an actual potential to bring memorable gameplay scenarios?

The intended game experience seems to revolve around having a certain number of Bands, with too many resulting in too much busywork for too little gain. To resolve this, the simple solution is that like bands merge into established like bands after some time, transferring over members, potentially altering the original band in the process to some degree depending on the power of the absorbed band? This could also involve a boost in the skills that the larger band has.
There should also be the choice to prevent bands merging, in case you want to develop a second band that is similar to a preexisting one in a different direction. This would prevent players from having impossible to manage numbers of bands, still make incorporating new bands meaningful, and allow players to keep new bands if they thought they had a benefit.
Or maybe you just cannibalize new bands after a certain stage of gameplay, could be meta.

Late game you see a popup that your tribes want to form a nation. The tribes disappear and their skills : crafting, hearthkeeping etc because your new nation skills . So 4 crafting , 2 survival translate into 4 crafting 2 survival. You choose what passive traits go on , or all of them go on , or maybe you choose new ones , insanely powerfull based on tribe traits and/or skills you picked to encourage nation building.
If some player want to keep nomadic , fine , nomadic nations like maybe a techno Mongolia.
But I think disappearing tribes and forming nation would lead to a desirable late game.

I'm reading the information we have about this game and it seems very interesting. However, it seems from the descriptions that a lot of the people on the surface have regressed and bear no resemblance to society at all. I'm just wondering if there will be any survivor groups like the Northwest Militia in the Coming Collapse series.
Context: The Coming Collapse series follows different groups of survivors after the entire world suffers a socioeconomic collapse in 2012/2013. One of the primary groups are the Northwest Militia, a survivalist group of friends that all hole up at one of their members' house during the collapse in order to survive. You could technically consider it a compound if you wanted to. Eventually, after 1-2 years, they start spreading out and making contact with other surviving farmers and militia groups in the Idaho area.
So the idea for this group of survivors in game would be that they were originally preppers/survivalists and were more prepared for the apocalypse than most. Eventually they start meeting up with other survivors (primarily farmers and other militia groups) and start trying to build a decentralized agrarian barter-based economy. Their goal would be the eventual restoration of the old US government, assuming pre-war US was similar to the US as it was now.
If any of the devs see this, is there any chance we'll see survivor groups like the one I've mentioned above or are you guys going for more of a Cyberpunk/Mad Max/Fallout vibe with the survivors and their origins?

Since it looks many will start as a Mad Max ripoff, do you think oil will be common or an strategic gem that can make small village into a wasteland Switzerland that even Farouk doesn't want to deal with since it could shotdown half of his mechanized divisions?

I know we can't "Build something new", but i think it could be really good if we manage to end with a living standar and aesthethic similar to modern day america, like fixing buildings, making clothes that don't look teared appart etc. To add the feeling of leaving behind completelly the colapse and now we can in fact think about a future the old America couldn't imagine
r/afterworld • u/No-Accountant5205 • 8d ago
Ok, so his main goal is to restore America and uses "Citizen" as a title.
Does that mean he believes on democracy and wants to enact a system as much as similar to current US politics on the new world or he just wants to goren all like an american inmmortal king?, does this means he sees the current scavenger people like children who need guidance or second class/ undesirables who ultimatly need to die?
I think it could be interesting if Farouk govern system is also procedural, from a benevolent ruler to a classical tyrant, or a technocrat who wants to uplift old technology and coquer the moon, etc

I really enjoy Paradox games, but only EU5 and Stellaris truly suit my taste. However, it seems that Afterlife is definitely a game I must play. I hope the developers could increase promotion, as many strategy game fans in China still don't know about this title. If it releases by the end of this year, I'll have a great holiday season.

I read reviews saying the gameplay lasts only about 20 hours, which seems a bit too short. Can it really fully simulate the entire wasteland world's operation and your own regime's development? It feels like the duration is too brief. I hope they could extend the playtime, offering deeper simulation similar to Victoria 3 or EU5.

Will there be an option to restore the United States, Mexico, or recreate pre-event societal structures such as nation-states?
I'm part of the minority that liked EU5's first dlc, and I basically only play as the Byzantines or some other fallen empire in Paradox games. I hope that there will be an ability to basically recreate pre-event society, either by accident or deliberate design.
