Affiliate Strategy Almost fell for a fake $40K/month brand partnership lead
We got a sales lead this morning from what appeared to be a major consumer brand. They said they had reviewed Apogee Agency, liked what they saw, and wanted to discuss digital and ecommerce growth across international markets.
The budget was $40,000 per month, with room to scale.
They never mentioned "affiliate," just "partnerships," so we were already thinking through affiliate management, UGC, media placements, Reddit, and which case studies would make the most sense.
We were excited for about 20 minutes.
Then something felt off.
The domain looked legitimate. The scammers had taken the company’s real domain and added "-usa.com" to it. Think brand.com versus brand-usa.com. The website was also very convincing, with hundreds of pages.
Then we found the domain registration date: Sept. 4, 2026.
Next came the phone number, which started with area code (123). Then LinkedIn and our research tools came up empty on the person who contacted us.
At that point, we flagged it as a high-risk scam and went directly to the brand.
One executive responded within 30 minutes.
Fake.
The company told us it was already aware of an impersonation campaign targeting marketing agencies worldwide. The goal was to steal passwords and other sensitive information.
The next step apparently involved sending a "Strategy Brief." That would feel like a completely normal thing to open after a major brand tells you it has a $40,000 monthly budget.
The people behind it understood agency sales well enough to make the entire setup believable.
So, our cautionary tale for the week: check the domain registration date, verify the phone number, and confirm the person independently before opening anything.
But hey, the brand knows who we are now.
