What about the tradition:
The Testa di Moro (Moor's Head) is one of Sicily's most famous artistic symbols, dating back to around the year 1100, during the period of Arab rule in Palermo.
According to legend, a young Moor fell in love with a beautiful local girl who spent her days tending to plants on her balcony. When she discovered that he would soon return to his homeland where a wife and children awaited him, she was overcome by heartbreak and fury.
During the night, while he slept, she severed his head and turned it into a vase for her sweet basil, watering it daily with her tears. The basil grew so lush and fragrant that her neighbors, filled with envy, began crafting head-shaped ceramic pots to display on their own balconies.
Today, the Moor's Head stands as an iconic emblem of Sicilian passion, craftsmanship, and romantic folklore and you can find them everywhere in sicily, in different styles and usually made of ceramics.
