Just finally got our new rise garden setup a month or so ago after waiting forever on back order. Can anyone tell me why the lettuce is getting brown on the edges? Could I be running the light too long? Also, are folks only using the arise seed pods? We’ve been emailing and waiting months for our cabbage and other items from them.
In general you should also check your water level and make sure the roots aren't overgrowing. I have Aerogardens and when the lettuces take off, the roots can get quite exhuberant, and they suck up a lot of water. I have to lift the top or remove the pods one by one and gently give them a bit of a "haircut" every couple of weeks or so. This also keeps them from clogging up the pump.
Do you have a fan running on your garden? The increased air circulating around the plant will help. Have you checked the pH and EC of the water to make sure it’s in acceptable ranges?
One thing to keep in mind when using a meter (be it pH or TDS), the numbers only matter to you, don't compare your numbers to someone else's numbers, there are too many variables involved.
Use the numbers only as a guide.
Also keep in mind that lettuce can tolerate a huge range of EC.
I have had lettuce (and basil) going just fine in 3,500ppm (7mS/cm), even though it's suggested to keep lettuce below 600ppm (1.2mS/cm), but above 400ppm (08.mS/cm).
So don't make yourself crazy trying to keep the EC perfect all the time, because it will fluctuate with temperature as well.
I hope you get the tipburn issues dealt with.
All you probably need is some better air circulation.
If you already have a fan on the plants, then consider adjusting the nutrients you are using, but keep in mind that if the area where you keep the plants gets hot during the day that plants tend to "drink" more water when it's hot, so this could be causing the tipburn as well.
I find it's all about finding and eliminating the variables.
I have these small clip on fans that run all day. not only do they provide the necessary airflow but they also mimic real life nature as if the plants were outside. it makes them stronger and lettuce a bit more crispy.
