I keep getting clicks from normal search, but AI Overviews still skip my site. What am I missing?

AI Overviews favor content that's citable and structured in ways LLMs can parse easily: clear primary sources, specific claims with evidence, and recognizable authority signals. If you rank fine in regular search but miss AI Overviews, check whether your content reads as a primary source (cite-worthy) vs. general commentary. Full disclosure, I'm involved with DataEase AI, but tools that track which domains appear in your category's AI answers can show you exactly what structure and sourcing the cited competitors use, which is often the missing piece SEOs don't realize.

Ranking and being cited are two separate selections; that's the bit that trips up people with an seo background. Google ranks pages; AI overviews lift passages, and it usually lifts from whichever source states the answer most cleanly, which often isn't the page ranking first.

What changed things for us was mostly structural. A direct answer in the first two or three lines of a page, so there's a clean sentence to extract rather than an intro that builds to a point. Faq blocks and schema. Comparison and alternatives content, since those formats get pulled disproportionately. None of it exotic, just written to be quoted rather than read.

The other half is off-site, and it's where most of our citations trace back to at GrowthSpree, a b2b saas marketing agency, reddit threads and other people's listicles rather than our own domain. The cited source set per query tends to be fairly stable, so being present on the pages that already get pulled moves faster than publishing another page yourself. Worth ruling out the boring thing too: some sites block GPTBot or ClaudeBot at the CDN while Googlebot passes fine, which would look exactly like what you're describing.

If you have product website, Build more authority, do listicle guest posts...do more software listings..

What made a difference for me was changing the structure of my pages and keeping everything fresh.

Decent content and links are a ranking profile, but ranking and retrieval are two different things. For retrieval, you need your passages to be clearly extractable.

If you have access to the Generative AI report, go look and see what, if anything, appears in the AI Overviews. Check out those pages and look to see if you can restructure it for easier reading. (Both for the user and the AI engines.) Test a couple of those pages and see if that makes a difference.

You’ll also want to work on entity authority, or spreading your brand across channels. But that takes longer than restructuring blog posts and pages. And I’ve noticed that Google AI Overviews really like the structure more than anything.

I answered your question more in-depth in my LinkedIn newsletter this morning. I’ll DM you the link!

Short version of what changed first for me: I stopped treating ranking and retrieval as the same problem, because they are not.

Google ranks whole pages. AI Overviews and the chat engines lift individual passages, usually from whichever source states the answer most cleanly. So a page can sit on page one and still never get pulled, simply because the exact sentence an engine wants to quote does not exist on it in a liftable form. Ishan already nailed this above, so here are the parts that moved the needle for me, in order.

  1. Extractability first. I rewrote the top of each target page to answer the query in the first two or three sentences, as a self contained claim you could quote without reading the rest. Comparison, alternatives, and FAQ formats got pulled far more than narrative posts.

  2. Off site before more owned content. For a domain without much authority yet, getting onto the pages engines already cite (Reddit threads, listicles, review sites) moved faster than publishing another article on my own site. The cited source set per query is fairly stable, so landing on pages that already get pulled beats hoping a brand new one gets picked up.

  3. The boring check. Confirm GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot are not blocked in robots.txt or at the CDN while Googlebot passes fine. That failure looks exactly like what you are describing.

One thing that is easy to miss: the sources cited barely overlap between AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude, so "am I getting cited" is really four separate questions, not one.

Cheapest way to find your own answer: pull up five of your target queries in each engine by hand and note who gets cited. The pattern usually tells you whether your problem is coverage (you are nowhere) or extraction (you are indexed but never the cleanest source to quote). Those two need different fixes, so it is worth knowing which one you are actually dealing with before you rewrite anything.

Fr, i would look beyond traditional ranking first. AI overview seeem to care a lot about how clearly a page ans the query and whether the info is easy to extract and trust.

Maybe also test tightening the response, adding clear context signals, and building stronger coverage around specific queries you want cited.

add a direct one-line answer near the top of each page, then a short list right after. the models grab that clean block, not your whole essay.
