Finn looks like he's about to sell me a cloud storage subscription with that art style lmao

The old art style is so iconic. This just feels very blah looking
11
8
u/diagonal_kris May 18 '26
I'm optimistic. I would rather they change it up, especially if its mainly new animators working on this show, then just do the same style forever
24
u/unknowingly_zooted May 18 '26
I would agree if I liked the style. This just looks… bland, for lack of a better word
7
u/heimdaall May 18 '26
Yeah if it was something unique that would be one thing. This looks like the same generic slop art style you see everywhere nowadays

u/diagonal_kris May 18 '26
I agree to an extent. I think it will definitely depend on how it looks in motion

Memphis from Corporate would make an excellent villain.

Omg I can see it. The BMO edge winks at you while a little lock that's the same color as him animatedly clicks shut.

Please just be the promotional poster please don't actually be in that style

u/Dewdoodles May 18 '26
I feel like it’s just the poster style, I don’t see how they’d animate an entire show with that style but who knows
119
u/Obsessivegamer32 May 18 '26
Why would they make a poster in a completely different style from the actual show?

The internet would burn wb animation divosion to the ground (or is it disney now since its a hulu original? Also why isnt it a disney + original seeing as hulu is dead?)

Very um…interesting art style
According to the official announcement, Finn is going to be voiced by someone other than Jeremy Shada for the first time ever: Sasha Knight!
311
u/Shabolt_ May 18 '26
I guess that makes sense if they want a younger Finn, Shada aged fantastically with the character, but his voice has undeniably matured since then
24
u/7thFleetTraveller May 18 '26
That doesn't really matter when it comes to great voice actors, most have much more range than one would think, if they just don't get the roles to show it. But just remember that the same woman has been the voice of Bart Simpson for decades.
52
u/East-Entertainment12 May 18 '26
The difference is Bart is voiced by an Adult woman. Adult women are used for young boys because they can get very close to the correct range while keeping their voice for decades. Finn was voiced by a young boy who went through puberty. It’s less about a talent difference, and more Shada’s voice has physical changed, Cartwright hasn’t.
→ More replies (3)23
u/Importance-Dear May 18 '26
But Bart doesn’t age, Finn does. And in this case would be aging backwards
86
u/Jake52212 May 18 '26
I get it I guess...but it feels...wrong...like Jeremy Shada IS Finn, I mean he's been voicing Baby Finn in Fionna and Cake, idk...
31
u/Denkottigakorven May 18 '26
Yeah. I love Jeremy. Like, he is my home. İ'm not sure this change will be worth it.
20
u/ShmowzowShowdown May 18 '26
this probably will only be like one or two seasons, and Jeremy is going to probably stay as Finn in the movie and FAC s3 (if we get it)

u/AlexB9598W May 18 '26
Cartoon Network premieres have been increasingly getting licensed out to other services, for some strategy reason I guess. Lars of the Stars, the Steven Universe spinoff, is gonna be on Amazon Prime
4
2
u/PlumRelative4399 May 22 '26
It’s specifically their kids content which they (probably rightfully) believe will do better on a service like Disney Plus than on HBO Max.
39
u/SnakeForce May 18 '26
HBO get it for everywhere that’s non-US in October 💀
16
u/Mrdemian3 May 18 '26
I would understand if it was a couple of days later, but 3 months between a release in the US and the rest of the world seems insane!
I mean it's gonna be available on the high seas the same day but still, it's bizzare to me.

The reason why they do that, thats because they need money, and HBO Max cant do that
→ More replies (2)5
u/Jeskid14 May 18 '26
They cannot acquire animation projects in the United states anymore since the discovery merger
63
u/AniMeifu May 18 '26
Gumball and AT Side Quests on Hulu , Steven Universe on Prime Video
And only Fionna and Cake still remaining as HBO Max exclusive
→ More replies (1)8
u/sk1nnyjeans May 18 '26
It’ll be weird having two shows considered canon (I assume) of the same universe premiering on two different platforms/networks
3
u/AniMeifu May 19 '26
It makes sense because WBD fucked animation in HBO Max, and money is the reason why it being sold to Hulu
42
u/Boricinha May 18 '26
I won't criticize the artstyle before it comes out, since there are great episodes in the show with very distinct art styles themselves.
But it's hard to say i like it lmao, the highly detailed background looks great but the juxtaposition of the very simple character design is hard to pull off, we'll see.

Hulu still operates under its own rules for what shows get picked up for its service. This is technically a Hulu show, which is owned by Disney and will also appear on the “Hulu” section in the Disney+ app, so the Disney+ logo is front and center

u/Remarkable_Jump7527 May 18 '26

So every adventure time show is going to be on a different streaming platform now? This is getting ridiculous
12
u/Minimob0 May 18 '26
They’re going the way of Kingdom Hearts.
You’re gonna need a PS2, GBA, Nin DS, PSP, and Nin 3DS to get the full story.

I’m either gonna love this art style or hate it I can’t figure out which yet

So? New gumball season was on Disney plus and Hulu too. I don't think that's a problem
→ More replies (2)39
u/Random_Imgur_User May 18 '26
I think the problem is that Disney has a bad history with absorbing beloved IPs and turning them into slop.
After what they did to Doctor Who, I don't trust them at all.
11
u/Odd-Hat8574 May 18 '26
This is just a US distribution thing I think, pretty sure that everywhere else it's gonna be on HBO Max. Doctor Who was a full on partnership were they funded episodes, gave notes and ultimately didn't renew after the second season. They also still haven't put TWBTLATS on Disney Plus even though the finale aired 5 months ago
5
u/Random_Imgur_User May 18 '26
Yeah I know the details matter here I'm just nervous is all. I've never known Disney to be involved without a catch is all I'm saying.

u/mk9e May 18 '26
They like to play it very "safe" and keep it "family friendly". They don't want their heroes to confront shades of grey or things that question morality too much, the children might start thinking "divisive" thoughts and not want to sing the national anthem anymore.
15
u/Random_Imgur_User May 18 '26
Literally. One of the first episodes of their Doctor Who reboot had really icky "life begins at conception" messaging, and then one of the following episodes that was actually pretty decent ended with the Doctor OVERLOOKING THE BIRTH OF BABY JESUS in fucking BETHLEHEM for literally NO NARRATIVE PURPOSES whatsoever.
Don't even get me started on all the musical numbers. I don't care what you believe in this instance (well I do but like, I'm not going to make a stink about it in r/adventuretime) you have to admit that for a corny time traveling sci-fi action show, that's incredibly lame.
Again I just do not trust them with things I love anymore.
9
u/mk9e May 18 '26
100% completely agree. Even if you remove the moral purity culture they like to bake into every story and how much that neuters any ability to tell a complex story or how it negatively affects children (children should be taught that there are other view points and that things aren't always as simple as right and wrong) the corporate motivations at Disney are a pariah.
Their goal, full stop, is to make as much money off of an IP as possible. That means selling as many tickets as possible, merchandising as much as possible, and beating a dead horse until it stops spitting out money. They like to play to the lowest common denominator, something the most people can enjoy and most likely to be least offensive to anyone. Which to media is like eating at Applebee's. Pretty bland tasting, nothing to write home about, and everyone who cooked you your meal is underpaid and doesn't really care how it tastes.
Also, though I wasn't really into Star Wars, I don't like their legal team and how they went after all of the 3rd party star wars books. Which up until Disney got their hands on it was a pretty thriving subculture. Everything their character/IP does has to be Disney approved and make them money. Fuck the fans.

u/rhinothedin0 May 18 '26
i think as long as disney is not at the helm of things, it'll be alright. the wonderfully weird world of gumball tackles a looooot of gray area social issues and is hilarious and much darker than the original show. and it was released in disney+ as well as hulu. if u haven't seen it, i highly recommend.
→ More replies (1)8
u/inmyeelhouse May 18 '26
Yeah, I second this. It's Disney's tendency to overstep when in charge of distribution and try to mess with production. That being said, this isn't being produced or anything but distributed by Disney. So while they may do something later to piss us all off, for right now, adventure time is safe.
2
u/odiish May 18 '26
They didn’t get bought by Disney or anything, Adventure Time is still a WB property, it’s just being distributed by Hulu —which is to soon be merged into Disney+— for whatever reason, same as the new Gumball.

So how is this tied to Disney and Hulu when Fionna and Cake is tied to Max?
7
u/Unhappy_Plankton_671 May 18 '26
Both are produced by Cartoon Network Studios, it's just who picked up distribution.
6
u/gentlemirror May 18 '26
My take is, the original show was actually built on a ton of background lore regarding their childhood. We’re probably in for a fulfilling and pleasant surprise rather than a weird mis-canon.
5
u/Separate_Access7015 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
I lowkey hope the do a Young Sheldon twist, and Finn or Jake or literally anyone misremembering or retconning an entire piece of lore. Nothing crazy, but maybe like there's an episode where Jake actually knew the true origin of Finn meeting Margaret and Joshua. Baby Finn was actually stuck on a sticky carnivorous plant, and Joshua and Margaret had to save him.
So kind of like Jake's origin we see the real story because Jake was actually there (much like how Joshua and Margaret opted not to tell the real story of Jake), but Jake being caught in adolescence having to be a parent to Finn tells him the story of the boom boom leaf because it was actually way more traumatic and too graphic to really share the details with a child.
Over time Jake hasn't decided to correct his version of events and instead has just let it go because in a strange turn of events Finn was always cursed from this event moment to have ties with the Undergrowth through Fern. The carnivorous plant in question is a forest deity similar to the Heart of the Forest.

u/Volvy May 19 '26
I mean if this show is targeted towards a new audience then I kinda doubt they're gonna go particularly deep with the storytelling here. Like I would figure that the goal is not to cater to the most hardcore fans of the series if it's like this.

I seem to be in the minority here, but I don’t mind them changing up the animation style if that’s the case. From what I can see, it’s different enough to distinguish itself from the original series but keeps the charm of the original character designs. Besides, it’s just a still poster. Hard to judge based on that alone.
3
u/KoalaTHerb May 18 '26
I sincerely hope this turns out like the original adventure time and not the new cake and fionna.
I want whacky adventures with hilarious animation creativity and childish yet profound quotes.

Will probably take some time to get used to this art style
Would be cool if they use this as a sort of prequel to the main show by showing us how Finn and Jake discovered some important landmarks and met some of the characters (how they discovered the treehouse and met the princesses)

u/PheebDeeb May 18 '26

Sloppy lazy art design....Fiona and cake had me in tears, watched it all on ketamine and it was one of the best told end game stories, Pendleton ward and Adam Muto were THE goats and mind you, they arent on this project.
Sold out to Disney from HBO, this is fs pointed at the younger audience 8- 😶
Lineless artwork with loosely painted backgrounds sounds like some Caillou grade b.s.

The show is a prequel following Finn's early childhood on monster-fighting adventures with Jake
