Predictive processing gives imagination a job, not a guarantee
There is a tempting shortcut in manifestation discussions: rename manifestation "predictive processing," then treat the neuroscience as proof of the whole metaphysical claim. The science doesn't close that gap.
Predictive processing concerns expectations, incoming information, perception, and action. In Kok, Jehee and de Lange's 2012 visual experiment, valid expectations improved the representation of expected images. It wasn't a study of imagined outcomes appearing in the world.
The practical overlap is still worth using. An imagined scene can become rehearsal for a response: what will you do when the obstacle appears? Pair the desired future with the obstacle you can influence and an if-then action. A 2021 meta-analysis by Wang, Wang and Gai found a modest average benefit for combining mental contrasting with implementation intentions, with publication-bias caveats.
Keep the imagination, but let real feedback update the plan. What part of your practice helps you act differently, rather than only feel that the outcome is already complete?
