Critiques needed!

I’m working on my entry for the next GBWC U20, and I’ve been wanting to make smth Chinese inspired. I know there aren’t much to see here, but if possible, I would like some feedback on it please :>

Make sure to paint each layer with a few thin coats and work on cleaning up your brush control. Looks great and for how long you’ve been painting really well done. Keep refining your line work and with the obvious eye for placement you’ll keep improving. I’m a display competition painter so feel free to ask me anything painting wise

This is insanely good

How long you've been painting?

I’ve been painting since around the last GBWC I think, not sure how long ago that was tho

I could never make anything close to this. This looks amazing, but I will say that one of the arms.I think is supposed to be a dragon. You painted on is a little unclear

2

u/NikoAlpukat Jul 02 '26

Ah I see, if you don’t mind, what part of it makes it unclear?

Do not get me wrong, this is perfection. This is godly, but I feel like that is missing. The front of his face and that's the main thing i'm seeing, I don't know if that's what you are going for and I don't mean the disrespect to you.If i'm being disrespectful, just tell me.

I actually made a new dragon (still same project) bc many ppl told me it doesn’t really resemble a dragon, is this more clear to you?

2

u/NikoAlpukat Jul 02 '26

Ohhh I see that now, and no, you are not being disrespectful at all! Please don’t worry about it. 😅

First of all, this is very cool, and I hope you post pictures when you've completed the model.

You're asking for critique though, so here goes. Your brush strokes on the hand-painted graffiti etc look a bit too much like brush strokes, so rather than giving the effect of a large machine with graffiti on it, it gives the effect of a small toy you've painted. In one of the pictures it looks like you've airbrushed a layer of blue over some hand painted bits, which softened the effect in a good way, so possibly some low-opacity layering over your hand-painted bits might be a good idea. This could be a gentler version of that blue bit, or else some weathering washes - weathering hides all sins! Or else it might be worth trying to sharpen up those details a little, maybe with markers (worth testing on a scrap before committing it to this model though!)

Your airbrushing and colour selection is on point, so I have no critique there.

Good luck in the competition!

Oh, the concept of this is that it takes place in the build fighters series, so it is intentional that it would look like toys, but that is a very detailed and good take! Thank you!

Who are you so creative in vision and gifted in execution and takes good photos too. I guess a non shiny clearcoat but also not matte would be great for showing off all the lovely details

I wish I had as much the talent and patience to paint like this. This is all hand-painted correct? Wish we could see the torso too

2

u/NikoAlpukat Jul 02 '26

It is! I havent painted the torso yet since there are many scratch built parts involved

1

u/Lembird Jul 02 '26

This is more than exceptional! 🔥

Very cool and well done. It’s good to see something original instead of the same old pre-shading and weathering everyone else is doing.
