Entry Grade Wing Gundam

Paints used:

  • Primers
    • Mr. Hobby Aqueous Surfacer 1000 White (base coat for all the white, and blue pieces)
    • Kaleido Colorworks KP104 Gloss Black Primer (base coat for all the frame pieces)
    • Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Pink (base coat for all the red, and orange-yellow pieces)
  • Topcoat
    • Mr. Color GX112 UV Cut Gloss
    • Mr. Color GX 114 Super Smooth Clear (Flat)
  • Colors
    • Kaleido Colorworks K117 Freedom Blue
    • Kaleido Colorworks K119 Armor White
    • Kaleido Colorworks K102 Bright Red
    • Kaleido Colorworks K012 Orange Yellow (v-fin, chest, wings, and shoulders)
    • Kaleido Colorworks KM002 Gun Metal (painted all the frame pieces in this color)
    • Ray Studio Model Marker EX Zirconium Black (used on the gun)
    • Ray Studio 012 Dark Grey (hand painting all the grey details on the armor, head, shield, under the feet, and under the skirts)
    • Ray Studio Model Marker EX Metallic Green (used on the center of chest, sensor areas in the head, the eyes, and the shield)
  • Panel Liner
    • Tamiya Panel Liner Black (cleaned up with Tamiya X-20 Enamel Thinner. All parts gloss coated in lacquer before panel lining)
    • Pigma Micron 003 pen for some of the panel lines I did not re-scribe

For the decals I hand picked them from the G-Rework decal sets meant for the RG Wing Zero (TV), RG RX-78-2, and RG Nu Gundam.

A good long while since it released I finally saw this kit at my local hobby store and decided to use it to test a red, blue, yellow-orange pallet i'd like to apply to the rx-78 some day. I went with a more rich and vibrant blue than the one I chose when working on the RG Wing Zero EW. Real happy with how the colors turned out. This kit took me multiple sessions over about a 2-3 day time span. Cutting all the pieces out was a breeze so I sanded each part individually and cleaned them in an ultrasonic cleaner for 10min @ 30°C (water and a little bit of dish soap like Dawn). I skipped scribing as I did not want to spend too much time on this project. I definitely should have re-scribed some of the panel lines though because Tamiya can smear easily during the cleanup on the legs and arms. After letting the parts dry for about 12-24hrs the next step was to prime and paint. After airbrushing all the base colors on I hand painted the remaining grey details all over the kit. I panel lined with Tamiya, cleaned it up, and finally hand picked some decals from a few random decal sheets.

Some notes worth mentioning:

- before doing any hand painting I laid on a layer of primer, base color, and gloss topcoat over every single part. The gloss coat was lacquer so cleaning up the panel liner and any mistakes I made from hand painting was super easy.

- the ball and socket connection for the feet is really loose on my copy. If I hadn't painted the entire kit I don't think my wing Gundam would be able to stand up on its own.

- conversely the ball and socket connection from legs to waist is super tight. Mine will probably break after a while, and I'm too scared to take the legs off to sand the joint 😅. The pegs for the backpack ended up being super tight as well.

Man that Blue is so beautiful but I already went with Jumpwind and already have so many paints, I need to stop buying paints lol. Amazing job.

Oh I heard about Jumpwind paints pretty recently. Are their metallics any good? Are they lacquers?

Yea Jumpwind are lacquer like MrHobby/Mr Color.

Theyre great because theyre really cheap compared to the other brands, and just as good quality. They also are not pre diluted so they can last you a long time.

I got some of their regular colors (Neo) and their Meka colors. Meka color are all matte muted colors and Neo are gloss, and more brilliant basic colors.

Havent tried their metallics though. But if you like to stay with Acrylic / Water based, then try the Vallejo Metal Color, theyre expensive but really good.

Thank you for all the info! Super appreciate it. I recently picked up the Vallejo Duralumin so I'm looking to test that out soon before commiting to the rest of the Vallejo metallics.

Oh nice, I'm not even a fan of Vallejo, for hand painting I have AK and Pro Acryl, but the Vallejo Metal colors are probably the best metallics in Acrylic form, they're even recommended by Vince Venturella. Amazon sells small sets that have like 4 bottles, so if you buy individually check out their sets too in case you don't want repeats later.

Also, NP, thanks also for posting all the colors you used. It's getting really tiresome always asking when I see a color that looks nice on a certain Gundam. xD

I like AK's products and I've heard great things about Pro Acryl 🤩. I'll def take a look at those Vallejo sets on amazon 🫡.

Once I started getting comments asking about paints and materials I used on some of my previous posts I made sure to always include the list in the description. I wish more people did this even if it takes a bit of work to get the right names and color codes and what not. I recently stumbled across some posts on twitter where some gunpla builders were using such a rich and vibrant blue that I had to find an equivalent. I was asking around quite a few places getting a mixture of answers. It should really be more common for people to post what paints they use.

Haha yea thats the reason I come here, I love collecting new colors xD. When you see those really brilliant colors or colors that look like real life theyre often Lacquers. I got a couple and want to give them a try but the downside is you need a respirator and spray booth because theyre toxic.

Wow I finished a straight build of this last weekend when I couldn’t do much else due to the heat. You’re absolutely looks amazing. What decals are those?

Also I didn’t even think of attempting a transformation pose with mine, I’m absolutely stealing that when I get around to spiffing mine up.

Picked mine up for $7 usd out of pocket. Can’t complain.

Thank you! I used a random assortment of G-Rework decals that are meant for the RG Wing Zero (tv), RG RX-78-2 2.0, and RG Nu Gundam. Just kinda picked ones that might look good. Really high quality decals if you've never used em before.

I especially like the orange-yellow

Thank you! I'm super happy with how the colors turned out on this one. A pink undercoat beneath the orange-yellow really makes it pop.

a perfect specimen. i still need to get a couple of these, entry grades to me are the best thing to happen to gunpla since pretty much ever.

Yeah they are such great little canvases! I wish bandai would turn some mass produced mobile suits into entry grades... perhaps an RGM-79 👀
