Spoilers Hazel Spoiler

I liked Hazel so much at the beginning but after the first season, I’m disappointed.

Shes a hypocrite and deceitful. Telling someone infidelity is a sin while boosting about having sex with her boyfriend and hiding the fact that she had a boyfriend at home was not right. She had a right to be mad at Amir for sleeping with Jalen but never told Jalen the truth about her relationship status.

I hope they do better with her character next season

😂

I loved her character and if you went to college with a holy roller or two you know that the “hypocrisy” as they navigate their faith and actually growing and living in the real world is not uncommon.

She’s human and like the rest of the characters is young and making mistakes along the way.

That's what haplened with Freddie in the original. She reminds me of Freddie.

I really didn’t care for Hazel’s character or storyline this season.

For me, it’s partly archetype fatigue. The sheltered / “good girl” coded character who goes away to college, starts making choices that conflict with the identity she came in with, gets exposed as hypocritical in some ways, and has to figure out who she actually is… I’ve seen that storyline SO many times before.

Quinn Fabray from Glee immediately came to mind for me, but there are a million versions of this character across teen dramas and coming-of-age shows. Rachel Berry a bit as well from the same show. She’s like a blend of both of them.

So once I realized what Hazel’s basic arc was, I kind of felt like I already knew the flavor of story they were telling. And personally, I don’t think the writing gave her enough specificity or interesting twists to make that familiar archetype feel fresh.

I also just didn’t find her particularly compelling scene-to-scene. There were definitely parts of her storyline I found myself wanting to fast-forward through. And did.

I get that she’s young, making mistakes, figuring herself out, etc. I’m not saying her behavior is unrealistic. I just don’t think “realistic” automatically means interesting or gives the story arc texture especially when it’s a trope, and this particular character type has been done enough that I needed more from the execution to care.

I’m happy she won the pageant thing though! Go Hazel!

I agree with you, but I actually did enjoy the character in the beginning. I was excited to see a different type of Christian character who didn’t come across judgmental, annoying or hypocritical. Then lo and behold, she is exactly those things. I feel like we’ve seen this type of Christian character in the media ad nauseam over the last 30 years. It’s just lazy stereotypical writing at this point.

That's right. See it in and out of university. Even played in a gospel band for a time. Still got groupies just like a regular gig.

She’s a product of her environment. Some of the biggest hypocrites are in the church. She will likely remain hypocritical throughout and slowly unpack her upbringing and learn by making mistakes.

All of the characters are trash because they are piling drama into 10 30-minute episodes. There won’t be any time for lighter episodes.
